Time to get our annual best of 2010 thread going...
The rules.... only one picture per post and no more then 5 pictures from any one person. The pictures must have been taken in 2010. The pictures do not have to be yours, but proper photo credit must be given and you must have permission to post the photo if it is not yours.
And while it is not required it's always nice if you post a little bit of info along with your picture. What, where when, who and how...

And to get things started.... here is one of my favorite pictures from 2010. This is Slickhorn Perfect Kiva, which is a hike I did with the wife and kids in October.

ahh, the ladder in slickhorn's perfect kiva. i can remember in 1978 and 81 climbing the original ladder while it was there. that ladder is now in the edge of the cedars museum in blanding, although they say it came out of grand gulch. in 81 we were there during thanksgiving and packed in the whole turkey day spread. right down to the cranberry sauce. i vaguely remember something about mushrooms being involved on that trip. great shot ice! :2thumbs:

I had to hike to get here. Does this count? Anyway this picture I took was intentional, but I made a mistake and set off Dave Brunnels strobes (using up his batteries for the proffessional shots he was taking) and was the best shot I got in this un-disclosed cave on April 21, 2010.

2010 was a GREAT year of hiking for me. Met lots of new folks.....guided many from Europe and some that had even come as far away as Australia. But the one that stands out the most was at the end of the season my last big hike with two of my best old hiking buddies that came into town. I caught them at the top of Comb Ridge at sunset on the last day of our outing. These shots may not be my best ones from this season....but they are the ones that have the most meaning to me this season. Each one has it's own story for me ~

Subtle, no shock and awe but it grew on me in the digital frame. It is from my last day of mountain running in the Wasatch before the mud and snow set in. The shot is taken late October from the bridge about a mile up Broad's Fork in Big Cottonwood Canyon. No trip report, because once I got up toward the ridge line I got plastered with fog, snow and freezing rain. I tucked my tail and got back below treeline and to the car as fast as I could run.

September backpacking trip to Maybird Gulch, Little Cottonwood Canyon, Wasatch Mountains, Salt Lake City, Utah. We had the place to ourselves. Camped just above and east of the Maybird lakes. This shot was taken in early morning on our way to the ridge separating Maybird from Hogum Gulch. Pfiefferhorn is in on the right side.

Mt. Baldy between Snowbird and Alta, looking Southwest into Mineral Basin at Snowbird. This was taken as I hiked all over the mountain shooting photos of the Speekgoat 50k foot race. This is a brutal race which gains over 11,000 feet in 30+ miles (also loses the same amount). I have taken photos for this race for years since my friend is the race director, however 2010 was special. My wife ran it and finished strong. She is a runner but had never even run a marathon on flat land before (prefers trails). Super impressed.

In early October, my wife and I went to St. Maarten as part of a month of travel. We paid $500 for a Jet Blue pass that allowed us to fly wherever they flew for 30 days. The $300 hotel on the beach helped make it a fairly cheap month of travel. We also went to New York City twice, Williamsburg, VA & Long Beach, CA for the day. This phallic cactus shot was taken on a short hike from our hotel in St. Maarten to an old fort called Fort Amsterdam. It sits on a peninsula that is rarely visited because it is accessed through private property. We had the place to ourselves each time we went.

In February, we went down to do Little Wild Horse & Bell Canyons. I've done it before in the winter but never with this much snow. We only really go there anymore to take others for the first time and that was the case here as we took my sister in law and brother in law. The snow was pretty ok in the canyons but was a pain in the ass on the hike between Bells and Little (I always do a reverse loop in order to end the hike with the best stuff). It was about 6 inches of snow with a sun crust the whole way so you would sit on top for a sec and then punch through. There were also some tricky iced out pouroffs in LWH. A great time with no other people seen.

This was taken in Cedar Mesa on a redemption hike. Last year, my wife and I attempted to reach this ruin but were cheated by sure death on a skinny ledge. My friend and I came back and reached it from the top. The 2 day weekend trip was jam packed with hikes to Bluff rock art, Seventeen Room Ruin, a San Juan River raft, a hike to the top of Comb Ridge, a hike up to Mexican Hat, a drive through Valley of the Gods, a drive up the Moki Dugway and to Mulie Point, great photos of Monument Valley at sunset, viewing an intact Anasazi pot and the Cedar Mesa hike you see here. Capped it off with a burger at Blondie's in Hanksville.

Since moving to Durango in late July, we resumed hiking like fiends , both locally and a few trips to southern Utah.
From our Aug 20 car camping trip near Telluride, here is a view from the Lizard Head trail, in the Lizard Head Wilderness area, of the San Miguel Mtns.:

And another from a hike near Silverton, to Ice Lake. It was an ass-kicker of 2,400' elevation gain to get to the money shots of the lake, which is over 12,000'. The skies were overcast by the time we got up there, which kills some otherwise good photos, but what are ya gonna do? :ne_nau:

Thanks! I have not been to Ophir, although I know where it is. I'm sure it is the same lake - not too many that I've seen that are that shade of blue/turquoise in the San Juans. I will have to go find Swamp Canyon on the map now; that must have been a rugged hike!

And another from a hike near Silverton, to Ice Lake. It was an ass-kicker of 2,400' elevation gain to get to the money shots of the lake, which is over 12,000'. The skies were overcast by the time we got up there, which kills some otherwise good photos, but what are ya gonna do? :ne_nau:

Hey, I went there in '09, you can borrow some of my pics if you want. Had perfect skies for photos.

Eric, what an awesome set of photos :2thumbs:; the clouds were the perfect kind for enhancing landscape pics. That lake was so intensely turquoise blue it is hard to believe in photos if you didn't see it yourself. And even more so on a sunny day!
Is that old miner's cabin further up along the same trail? Old buildings like that are so cool...

Ya, and crazy how the lake coming from the one drainage is so turquoise but the lakes from the drainage right next door are normal and clear. Wild. Ya if you continued past the blue lake to the upper basin there was another larger lake next to that old cabin. Really beautiful area, hope to make it back again next summer for some canyons in Ouray and to explore more areas.

the ladder in slickhorn's perfect kiva. i can remember in 1978 and 81 climbing the original ladder while it was there. that ladder is now in the edge of the cedars museum in blanding, although they say it came out of grand gulch. in 81 we were there during thanksgiving and packed in the whole turkey day spread. right down to the cranberry sauce. i vaguely remember something about mushrooms being involved on that trip. great shot ice!
