Anybody done any of this stuff? I remember seeing some photos like this elsewhere, and how cool they look - like miniatures or toys. Then my wife mentioned that they use it in the credits of the new Sherlock Holmes BBC series. So I decided to look further into how to do this.

So it's easily google-able, and I started messing around. A few have come out fairly well:

Anyone else been messing with this stuff?

By the way, a cool collection of them here: http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2008/11/16/beautiful-examples-of-tilt-shift-photography/

A friend of mine has a Canon SD1400 and it has "miniature mode" to get results like that. I might pick a used one if it's cheap enough, only $175.00 new, though.

You can also do it with software called Bokeh2 by Alien Skin.

Oh but it's amazing what you can do with it. Check out this before and after shot of this horse

The actual color of the horse is much better in the original..

Still not worth $200, IMO.

:soapbox: Software should be cheap like apps for your phone or tablet. Okay, maybe not that cheap but more like $50 tops for a really nice piece of software like Photoshop. Plugins, Photomatix and stuff like that Bokeh2 should be more like $5-$20. I think if software companies would pull their heads out and charge reasonable amounts then people would actually pay for the software making them far more money in the end. Instead most download cracks, find serials, etc.

Did you read what I wrote?

Yep. And I completely agree with you. My response was to what remoteman45 said. The point of the software is the bokeh effect in the image. Even if the foreground had maintained its original image quality and the desired bokeh was attained, I still wouldn't think it was worth $200.
