View Full Version : Trip Report Captn's Log- Skiing/Riding Season- 2010/2011

Hey everyone,
As to not to clutter up this section with a million posts over a very long season, I am starting a thread where we can all post our days this season on the snow. This can be used for trips in the backcountry, at the resort, or urban missions ect. Something like as follows would be a good way to post it up when you do post in the Captn's Log- arrrrr!
Day- (Whatever day of the season you are on / MM/DD/YYYY)
Location- (Where ever you were that day.)
Conditions- (Powder or Bulletproof?)
Gear used Skiing or Riding- (Were you on those reverse camber narrow ass snowboard skis that were sick? Tell us about them)
Description- (Tell us about your day. Highlights or low lights, its all up to you.)
It would be great to see what all of us do on the snow this season. I'll go ahead and start this off. Hope everyone gets some great days on the snow this year.

Day- 4- 11/14/10
Location- Snowbird, Utah
Conditions- Sleet/Freezing Rain
Gear used Riding- Burton Custom 158
Kind of gnarly for a first day at the Bird. The snow was like freezing rain, and if you got near a snow gun, forget about seeing. Still made the best of it. Took 7 runs and I was outta there. Be back on Tues. Just glad to be back at the Bird.

Day- 5- 11/16/10
Location- Snowbird, Utah
Conditions- High winds and lots of new snow!
Gear used Riding- Burton Custom 158
Graupel heaven today at the Bird. With the wind and the new snow, smoothed out everything and made it a blast. 3 Trams, then they shut it down because of high winds, and they ran us all over to Gadzoom. Really fun laps today over there. Too bad I had class at 2:30, or I would have ridden till last lift chair it was so good. I love surprise days like this.

What a week here in Utah! We got smacked by a series of storms which have taken our mountain from shallow coverage, to being able to hit a lot more terrain off trail. Sunday the 21st, we got a huge storm which was pretty dense and mostly grauple. It was just puking up there. So I decided that I would head back up Monday the 22nd because the Tram line on Sunday was a bit crowded, and Monday was the day of the week to be up there for sure. Dropping into shin to knee deep pow turns in Peruvian Gulch. The snow was so good, I really had one of those days where you forget how many runs you have taken, and just explore the mountain and all the good snow! Unbelievable conditions for November that is for sure. Tues the 23rd was a leftovers day, snowed like 3 inches, and then there was still a lot of untracked. It kind of was a bummer though, I got only a few runs and the winds shut the whole mountain down because of the approaching blizzard- I'll get to that in a moment. Wen the 24th was the after the so called "Blizzard of 2010" day. It only put down about a foot in spots, and to be frankly honest, I thought we had more blizzard conditions on Sunday. What was really crazy was how cold it was. -18 off Hidden Peak with a wind chill of -39.:cold: Some of the coldest snowboarding I have ever done. And I always ride in a storm, because that is when the snow is the freshest. But this was unreal, and I am sure glad I busted out the arctic layers and had zero exposed skin while riding. Last Tram of the day was some incredible pow turns in Peruvian off the Cirque. Sorry for the lack of pictures, but there was no way in hell was I letting my nubs out of my gloves when it is that cold. 10 days in riding this season and it is only Thanksgiving weekend. Loving it! Looks like there is another storm heading in Sunday. I have been on my powder boards all week. I never have ridden those in November. Loving this season so much, and hope to have a bit warmer riding conditions this weekend, the camera will get a bit more use. BTW, Mineral Basin opens on Saturday. I have never in my 5 seasons there ever seen that ready to go in November. Last year it was Dec 20th that it opened. Nov 27th? Unreal. Looks like by Dec 17th, the Bird will be 100% open and operational. Just amazing!

Mmmm another storm is brewing..... i wish.... i wish.... i wish.... lots of snow between now and the end of December... can't wait to play in it. Love the reports! Keep them coming.
We found a small amount of snow today down here in southern Utah in Dameron Valley enough that an unexpected snowball was thrown at me. And that is all the snow I have to report on at this time.

Sick pow day at the Bird. So much snow, West Baldy off the Mid-Traverse all day and it was still good. So stoked!

Fantastic morning at Snowbird! Got first chair on Gadzoom! Freshies everywhere, no one there. I was, because of lack of traffic able to do real Tram laps (Where you beat the Tram to the bottom that took you to the top.) Gadzoom, Tram to Peruvian, and even a lap on Wilbere this morning. Snow was so incredible! Perfect day to be up snowboarding.

It has been a pretty fun week at Snowbird. No crowds, and new snow everyday I went up. Sunday was a surprise pow day in Mineral Basin. Bluebird skies and the boots disappearing in the new snow. Tues was fresh and no one there. Thur was fresh once again and bluebird skies. Friday a storm cycle moved in, and it was snowing so hard with the wind blowing, it was filling it back in on every run. It has been an amazing season and it is just getting started. Pray 4 snow!

This has been an incredible storm cycle over the last week. It has been new snow almost everyday. Wen the 15th was a really fun day with about 7" of fresh, pockets much deeper. Saturday I was off from work for the holiday, and had a pretty good session till a bit afternoon. Sunday had us traversing Mid-Baldy with some of the best snow all year. And Monday was a shit show because of the road closure, got up there about 1 pm, and got 3 trams, 2 Gadzoomers, and 2 Wilbere before the mountain was done. It was knee deep or deeper from top to bottom in Peruvian Gulch. Snowbird is over 200" already for the season. What an incredible start to a year! :hail2thechief:

Tues was redemption time for the road closure. Best Cirque and Baldy of the year. Wednesday the storm turned really wet and heavy, while off trail was unbelievably deep, on trail had more chop than a food processor. Thursday it was wet and heavy again, with great runs off the Cirque, Baldy and a Mid Rope line run into Amphitheater, that for sure was the best snow of the day.

The last week riding has been really what snowboarding is all about. We went out on a nice note for 2010, with a nice storm that put us over 260" for the season and a 100" base to boot. This week has been a lot of fun because finally, after two weeks of no sun, we finally had some blue bird days. And the temps stayed nice and cold, not setting up our base like concrete, instead we had a very nice velvety smooth and very fast surface to ride on trail with. Off trail was somewhat tricky, but as the days progressed, off trail became a bit more fun. Enjoy the pics. The video is me riding and my friend Jeremy following me filming as we are taking a lap on P-Dog from top to bottom. Music by BT. Enjoy! Pray 4 Snow!!!

So I got a new ContourHD helmet cam. Xmas showed up a little bit late for me this year. I love this cam, made some modifications that I will comment on after I test them out this week, but out of the package I am more than impressed with the quality and the very functional and easy use of this gadget. The Bird has been varied conditions and a little bit of new snow. It seems that the snow gods gave it to us so hard in December, they were taking a break. But we got a few inches here and there, and if you really love snowboarding like I do, that is just enough. I have two videos that I have made so far riding, one a groomer day, and one a very sopped in day with some freshies. Can't wait to get this out on a monster deep day. Enjoy the videos, nice set of systems heading our way this week, so more to come.

You have not had many to pick in January. After starting off the year with record snowfall, we have had a measly 14" of snow for the month. Last January in comparison, we got 109" of snow for the month. I am dying for some deep days for sure. It was bulletproof up there today, ran 4 laps and called it because it just was dangerous to be on the hill. It rained last night at 11,000 ft? Rain that high in elevation in January? WTF???:eek2:

Location- Snowbird, Utah
Conditions- Glacial Ice and Pow Pow
Gear used Riding- Burton Custom 158, Burton Supermodel 159, ContourHD
What a week it has been. It rained at 11,000 ft Sunday night and Monday night, turning our luscious snow pack into a glacier. Monday was some of the scariest conditions I have ever ridden at the Bird. To give you an idea how gnarly it was, Ski Patrol had to descend via a rope line down Regulator Johnson because it was so bad. The rain just solidified every feature on the mountain. On top of that, 80-100 mph winds ripped all the snow out of the trees, taking branches down with them. A tree took down Gad II for 3 days. Little Cloud lift was still closed on Friday. I was jumping tree debris on the way back to the center after four courageous runs on Monday before I decided my health and well being was more important than riding anymore that day. Wednesday was a full mountain healing, with some really dense snow covered the nasty, and made for a really fun day riding. I have included some highlights in Peruvian Gulch and the Cirque on Wen. It was a fun day, for sure what I love about snowboarding. I had to have emergency surgery Friday morning, so I am down till mid-week next week. If you get out, rips some turns for me. Enjoy the video. Pray 4 Snow!

Yeah, that was Monday. I still can't believe that I lasted 4 runs on Monday.
I had a report from my friends in the rental shop that on Tues, a guy went down on lower primrose and did not stop until he hit the flats in the bottom of the hill.
Wednesday was a quick turn around with all the new snow we got. I had so much fun riding that day.
Thanks for the well wishes. Gonna give it a few days before I ride again so I am fully mended.

Well the last few days riding have been a variety for sure. And the best part was that there were no two days the same. To start the month off we did a arctic mission to Solitude on the 2nd. Then back to the Bird on Friday for some more seasonal temps. Sunday the 6th was great because I got to snowboard with ibenick. We had a lot of fun, and hanging out at his place afterward for hotwings and PBRs was awesome. Monday the 7th was just kind of a cruiser day, with a couple of inches of fresh to liven up things just a bit. The best day of the week by far was Tues the 8th. 16" overnight storm made the entire mountain epic. It was so good I literally lost track of time for about 2 1/2 hours because I was in the zone. So much snow, and we have needed one of these storms, it has been quite a while. Enjoy the video, I will post up vids from this past week and from Solitude in the next day or two.

I took a few days off after that last storm cycle, needed a break to catch up on school. But have had a few really fun days riding since. Powder on Thurs was amazing and the leftovers on Friday were pretty fun too, just really windy, blowing the snow all over the mountain. Some really smooth wind deposited sections, and some really exposed to the crust areas. You just had to be very selective of your lines. The groomers were off the hook on Friday. Here is a video from Thursday and a video from the 2nd riding Solitude in -18 degree temps. Don't let the sun in that video fool you. It was -18, not warm at all. Enjoy! Pray 4 Snow!

I have been holding a free pass to the Canyons I won from Salty Peaks since December, and with the forecast calling for what it was, I decided what a better day to use it than Friday. I arrived quickly threw on the boots and headed up the Cabriolet. Took my first chair of the day on the Orange Bubble Chair. This is new this year, has a orange transparent cover you pull down with the safety bar. It is like the worlds largest Persimmon lens. And the seats are heated- Crazy! Talk about the lap of luxury for a lift chair. The new lift set up is sweet up there. Still a junk show as I always remember at Red Pine, but the rest of the mountain was sweet. I rode non-stop from 9 am to 3pm. No Breaks, just lift after lift. Pretty much lapped the whole place, and even hit a couple of backcountry gates for some really great slasher runs. Even took Shortcut to Docs run to get back to the base. Never once took the Gondola. Snow was so deep up top. Up to my ballz in places. Made it to the new Iron Mountain area as well. Last run off Tombstone through Dechutes to get to Red Pine area was amazing in the trees. Enjoy the video! Cheers!

Staying off till Friday because my legs were worked after Monday. 3 out of 4 days riding a storm was incredible, but want to be strong when the next system comes in. Enjoy the video.

This time of the year is why I have a pass to the Bird. We get dumped on in the spring. Last year we did like 300" in less than two months in the spring. This was an amazing storm! Sunday it came in and it was free refills all day long. Like swimming in a milk bottle in Mineral Basin at times (See attached video below). Monday was just getting deeper, and made for some really dense and heavy but fun turns. Tues was the day out of this storm, it put down 18" overnight to have a bluebird day on tues which was epic and deep! I had the 162 Malolo out on Tues it was so deep. Looks like we have a little bit more heading our way this weekend, then I am off to AZ for some desert and sun for 5 days. Enjoy the videos, I know I had fun making them. Cheers!

Man, if that all came down in the creek right now, we would have a disaster on our hands.
Its gonna be a while till it melts out. We still have that January 8th rain event that glaciated the whole mountain to melt off. There are parts of Road To Provo skiers left that glow blue. And then 200" on top of that. We better hope for a slow warming.

You bet! I am far from done. I think we will be getting June turns at Snowbird, we have so much snow up there. I will put up a vid from today when I get a chance this week. To stay built up in the off season, I have found hiking and backpacking keep my legs strong. First day of the season my friends legs just burn, minus getting used to the boots, I ride from peak to base no problem because the legs stay in good shape all summer.
But do what is best for you. And I hope you are back at it soon!

What an amazing storm cycle we have had. A serious week long cycle that put down so much new snow. The snow pack has been unbelievable, and the powder off the hook. I have only had one groomer day since I got back from Arizona last month. After spending April 1st in shorts hiking Bells Canyon, it just started dumping and never let up. April Fools video is from last week. B-Town video is from Sunday, and After the storm was Monday riding up there. We are primed for a very long spring cycle, I bet we are riding Little Cloud and Mineral until late June. Enjoy the videos, I know I had fun riding and making them. Cheers!

Day 77- 4.14.2011
Snowbird
Conditions: More Powder, visibility nil at times.
Gear: Burton Supermodel 159, Contour HD
This season just wont quit! We just keep getting snow! This was a really fun day riding. It was challenging to say the least with the visibility virtually gone. Made the best of it and got so many pow turns. They closed the road at noon for avalanche control, so ended up riding from 9 am to just past 3 pm. So many miles of pow! Good times all around. Loving spring in Little Cottonwood Canyon this season!

Day 78- 80 4.2011
Snowbird
Conditions: Soggy wetness, and a Bluebird Pow Day.
Gear: Burton Custom 158, Contour HD
Well last week started out very soggy. Monday put the Goretex to the test with how wet this storm came in. Really fun riding, but could have used a windshield wiper for my goggles. Wen was wet again, though a little more snow up top. Friday was the day of the week. It was day 80 riding for the season. Fresh pow overnight from a fast moving storm. Bluebird skies and not a lot of people there. Good times and great riding conditions for April. 667" for the season with what looks like more on the way. Enjoy!

Day 81-82 4.25.26.2011
Snowbird
Conditions: More Powder, just keeps getting better!
Gear: Burton Custom 158, Burton Supermodel 159, Contour HD
Monday 4.25 was a freshies day, low visibility, and frozen roller balls of death everywhere. You had to lean on the side of caution, for hitting one of those will ruin your day. Did get one sunny lap out in the bookends, then it sopped back in.
On to today 4.26.11. Well this is the season that keeps on giving! Today Snowbird broke its all time season total record by reaching 690" with this storm. The previous record was set in 1983/1984 with a season total of 688". It was crazy fun up there today. Late arrival because of the road closure, but well worth it as I was in deep pow all day, including my last run down at 3ish to head home. We have another storm slated for Friday with up to 2 feet expected! And long range charts show another one May 4th-10th. Just madness, I think is it a sure bet we are gonna bust 700" this season. BTW, after this weekend, Snowbird is the only show in town. Looks like they are gonna be open for a while. Sick!

Yup, still a ton of snow up there. I had to work Sat, and from all the reports I got it was a junkshow up there. I rode Mon, Tue, Wen, Fri and today, so didn't feel like I was missing out yesterday too much. I will say that crowd hammered Baldy pretty hard yesterday. Not a fresh track to be found out there anywhere today. Only untracked we found was off the Knucklehead and some Gad Valley tree runs and Who Dunnit.

Conditions: Winter continues up the LCC

It has been an amazing season! The last few days riding have been really a lot of fun! The mountain is now down to MBX, Little Cloud and the Tram. Early mornings on the hill find the very bottom very scratchy, but the snow is holding out up top. Looks like it is really gonna warm up, so corn and mashed potatoes cannot be too far away. Enjoy the video from Wen the 27th, getting yummy freshies and leftovers from a record breaking day!

May Day! May Day! May has arrived following a wicked storm cycle to finish off the month of April. We now have a full shed cycle going on where it is getting springy and in Mineral Basin it was quite manky! This has been one hell of a season, and we still have 170" base up there. I will be sneaking off into the Escalante area this weekend, so wont be riding until after I get back since Snowbird has gone weekends only. Some Cinco De Mayo action on there, and for sure darkening the goggle tan. Enjoy!

Day 89-90 5.2011
Snowbird, Utah
Conditions- Spring Corn and Freshies
Gear- Burton Supermodel 159, Burton Custom 158, ContourHD
This time of year we should be winding it down and getting ready for summer. I rode Friday the 13th before we departed for Escalante. After I got back it just started dumping up there again! It seems to be endless winter in Little Cottonwood Canyon. Last week we did over 30" of snow, so much they had to stay closed on Friday the 20th of May due to avalanche danger. I got to jam a session on Sat the 21st with really great conditions for May. I was getting slasher turns up top, and corn at the base. Sun was out for the first time in days, and it was just fun to be cruising. Here is an edit from Sat. Looks like we are gonna be doing weekends only up there for a while. 180" base as of Sat. That is a lot of snow, as you can see in the video. Enjoy!

Day 91 5.30.2011
Snowbird, Utah
Conditions- 12" of hero pow
Gear- Burton Custom 158, ContourHD
Yes it was Memorial Day. Yes we had a fresh 12" of hero snow. Yes there were lines. We had almost a two hour wait till Peruvian went up the hill. We made the best of it, and I will say this is the deepest Memorial Day I have ever had. So much snow. Looks like we will be riding until July 4th this year. Incredible! Enjoy!
