WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--The Pac-10 Conference office released the 2011 football schedule today and Utah's first game as a Pac-12 member will be at USC on Sept. 10. It is Utah's first visit to the Coliseum since 1948. Utah's first Pac-12 home opponent is Washington--a team that has never played the Utes in Salt Lake City--on Oct. 1.

The Utes will compete in the Pac-12 Southern division, meaning they will meet Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, UCLA and USC every year, and four teams from the Northern division on a two-year home-and-away cycle. Utah's 2011 and 2012 Northern division opponents will be California, Oregon State, Washington and Washington State.

Utah's 2011 Pac-12 schedule features home games against Washington (Oct. 1), Arizona State (Oct. 8), Oregon State (Oct. 29), UCLA (Nov. 12) and Colorado (Nov. 26). Pac-12 road games are at USC (Sept. 10), Cal (Oct. 22 in AT&T Park in San Francisco), Arizona (Nov. 5) and Washington State (Nov. 19).

The Utes will open the 2011 season against Montana State on Thursday, Sept. 1 (all other games will be played on Saturday). Utah also plays two non-conference road games at Brigham Young on Sept. 17 and at Pittsburgh on Oct. 15.

"We are pleased that the league announced the schedule this early so that our fans can begin making plans to attend as many home and away games as possible," said Utah Director of Athletics Dr. Chris Hill. "Without question, this is the most challenging schedule in Utah football history, but also the most exciting. Not only is our Pac-12 Conference schedule demanding, but we have non-conference road games at BYU and Pitt. Next season is the start of a new era of Utah athletics."

The nine-game 2011 Pac-12 schedule nearly doubles the previous number of games Utah has played against current Pac-10 teams in a season. In 1968, the Utes played Oregon State, Washington State, Oregon, Arizona State and Arizona, but the latter two were members of the Western Athletic Conference with Utah at the time.

Game times and television for the 2011 Pac-12 games will be determined later.

The good news is no Oregon or Stanford next year and USC is under NCAA sanctions.... and the Utes should be returning the basics of a good team next year...

Utah should be well positioned to make a run at the PAC 12 title game. :2thumbs:

SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah coach Kyle Whittingham mentioned the need to upgrade the program as they transition into the PAC-12 in the 2011 season. One early report is indicating that he is doing just that.
Tom Dienhart, a sports writer for Rivals.com, is reporting that the Utes are expected to hire Norm Chow as offensive coordinator and Tim Davis as offensive line coach. The hires are expected to happen soon. For Norm Chow, this would provide an opportunity to return to his alma mater. Chow was a two-year starter at offensive guard for the Utes (1966-67). . .

Just having Chow would really help recruiting too...

if you consider less than 10 touchdown passes in a whole season with the titans a "good year." titans canned him.

yeah, he hasn't forgot how to coach. i'm just saying the games changed a lot in the last decade, not sure he has with it. He hasn't proven to be a really good OC since he left USC.

it still could be an upgrade for the yewts. just not sure this is a slam dunk is all. i have been wrong before though... :lol8:

Whenever a team is doing poorly the fans start calling for the QB or a coaches head.... which is why Chow might be available.

and... he might be the best available coach, I have to think Chow is an upgrade over the current situation.

Pac-12 football: Hotline projections for the 2011 season

Posted by Jon Wilner (http://blogs.mercurynews.com/collegesports/author/jwilner/) on January 20th, 2011 at 6:40 am

The first Pac-12 football season, at this early point, looks to have four primary story lines:

1. It’s the first Pac-12football season.
2. The duel between Stanford and Oregon for supremacy in the North — and presumably the entire conference. (Both teams figure to be preseason top-10 picks.)
3. The expected ascension of Arizona State in the South, and
4. The state of Troy, which will gain clarity after the NCAA rules on USC’s appeal for a reduction in scholarship losses and the bowl ban. (Note: The appeal will be heard this Saturday.)
Most likely, offseason developments will generate another theme or two for us to consider throughout the spring and summer.

With the right to revise the picks following spring practice, and then again after training camp, here we go …

NORTH
1. Oregon: The Ducks were 30 minutes better than Stanford in 2010 and get the slight edge headed into ‘11. The teams suffered comparable personnel losses (three OL, both WRs, numerous defensive starters), but Stanford must replace its head coach, primary playcaller and defensive coordinator.
2. Stanford: All signs point to the North title being decided Nov. 12 at Stanford Stadium. But things that seem so obvious rarely unfold according to plan. Worth noting that the Cardinal does not play Arizona State.
3. Oregon State: Despite losing Quizz Rodgers and Stephen Paea, OSU is the default pick for third. The gap between the top two and the bottom four looks to be enormous.
4. Cal: The Bears don’t have a proven quarterback, but neither does Washington — and I’ll take the rest of Cal’s lineup over the rest of UW’s lineup. But it’s close. Very close.
5. Washington: TB Chris Polk’s return helps matters, but there are major questions at QB and on defense. (Huskies allowed 28+ pts in two-thirds of their conference games last season. The unit had better be much stingier without a proven quarterback.)
6. Washington State: Slotting the Cougars for last in the North but would not be surprised if they finished as high as fourth. They’re in better shape at QB than either the Bears or Huskies.

SOUTH
1. Arizona State: The Devils have been building for ‘11 for three years. They have 20 returning starters, a favorable schedule and the league’s best defense. And a coach who knows his job is on the line.
2. USC: Despite the roster attrition (transfers, NFL departures), the Trojans have more than enough talent to win the South. The key is getting the bowl ban reversed by the NCAA.
3. Arizona: Heavy personnel losses on both lines result in the Cats getting slotted third, with a chance to finish lower unless Nick Foles takes his game to another level.
4. Utah: Wouldn’t be surprised if the Utes, who return their starting QB (Jordan Wynn), finish third in the South. As a welcoming gift, they don’t play Stanford or Oregon.
5. UCLA: The brutal early-season schedule and lineup holes make a second-tier finish likely. The Neuheisel Watch could be in full force by Oct. 1.
6. Colorado: Projecting a bounce from the coaching change, but Buffs — even more than Utah — lack the depth to win consistently in their new home.

Heck yeah. The guy is proven, knows the Pac-10, QB's, and has forgot more about offenses then most OC's know...especially Brandon Doman. :naughty: Hell, Chow accomplished a ton after he left BYU. WAY more then when he was there. For BYU fans it's a lousy hire, but hey you let him go...

Wavering recruits are sure the sign because they have him.

you truly are delusional acca. :lol8:

he was successful at USC. not so much the other places. hard to say he did "way more" after he left. the guy did win a national championship at BYU. but there is a reason why he's been essentially fired the last few stops he's made...

BYU - one national championship. bosco, young, etc...
NC State - eh. philip rivers was around. chow didn't last long.
USC - two national championships with pete, leinart, palmer, and a whole mess of recruiting violations.
Titans - eh. didn't do much.
UCLA - eh. didn't do much.

you really think recruits who are wavering will sign because of him? kinda doubt it's that big of a deal. however, i can see why the Utes are all excited, it's definitely an upgrade. no one will say he isn't good. i just don't think he is as good as he once was. you think utah will try to use the pistol this next season? :haha:

With a rookie Vince Young at QB, was you expecting greatness?

you think utah will try to use the pistol this next season?

Norm is not a big fan of the pistol and I doubt you will see it next year at Utah. Wynn is NOT a pistol QB. The pistol was imposed on UCLA by Neuheisel and UCLA didn't have the right personel to run it at a high level.

i just don't think he is as good as he once was.

I think he is every bit as good as he once was.... coaches don't suddenly forget how to coach.

Honestly I don't think it matters what offense you run in college, so long as you recruit to it, its well coached, and your team buys into what you are selling.

Anyhoo.... Chow is a plus over the current O coordinators any why you slice it.

Utah's problem for the first few years in the PAC 12 will be lack of depth. That will hurt them when they get into the grind of a PAC 12 season.

But I can't wait until the first Wednesday in February.... that will be the first chance to see what the jump to the PAC 12 really did for the Utes.

CarpeyBiggs

that is supposedly chow's greatest strength... developing quarterbacks.

I think he is every bit as good as he once was.... coaches don't suddenly forget how to coach.

likely. but, he was much more ahead of the curve before, because everyone wasn't running his offense or variation thereof. now, everyone runs it, and many run it better. he hasn't shown much since USC, when he obviously had massive amounts of talent around him. my feeling is he just hasn't progressed much, and lots of offenses have caught up.

but, with all the variables, it really is impossible to say if he will be successful or not. i think everyone will agree it's a better situation than there has been up there. just not sure it's much more than that.

true. he only took a team with a losing record and finished with a winning record and playoff appearances. chow never had a loosing record with the Titans. Titans record tanked after he left.

I'm not sure that's really fair.... After hearing about the real Vince Young do you really believe anyone can make a good pro QB outta him?

Some would argue that it is fair. He took a QB who was thought by some, rumor including Chow before the draft, not to be cabable of succes in the pro game and he mentored him to ROTY and a Pro Bowl apperence.

i just don't think he is as good as he once was

BYU fans said the same thing about Chow in the late 90's when he was still at BYU.

true. he only took a team with a losing record and finished with a winning record and playoff appearances. chow never had a loosing record with the Titans. Titans record tanked after he left.
you should double check this. the year after he left, they went 13-3. his last season with them, they had NINE touchdown passes. NINE... they were markedly improved the next season, after he was gone (though the offense wasn't the biggest reason, they had an awesome D that year...) the three years he was there were 2005, 2006, 2007, and their record was 4-12, 8-8, 10-6. and then he got fired. and they went 13-3 the next season.

I'd say he is a good hire. U need a better OC and they got one even if he is past his prime.
no one is disagreeing with this statement. acca was suggesting that this was a move that was sure to sway recruits and implied it was a great hire, and that he had done "way more" since he left byu than he did at, which is obviously not true. like ice said, of the available hires, this one is probably the best, and safest. but, it's impossible to say how good it really is. bottom line, his offenses haven't been spectacular for quite some time now, and none of us know how he'll do at the U.

Dood you really need to take off those blue goggles once in a while. The Utes started on an 8 game winning streak averaging 45-50 points a game. They finished with 10 wins out of 12.

BYU fans are bitter because they thought Chow was through and then he left and got two national titles and coached two more heisman winners. He also picked up a variety of other coaching awards. The guys rep is undisputed as a top offensive mind.

The influence that he will have on the younger coaches at Utah will be invaluable for their careers. Having a mentor like that is worth it's weight in gold. I predict that Brian Johnson will be an OC within 3-5 years.

:roflol:

dude, it's weak smack talk. i just thought it was a funny comment you made, so i re-emphasized it. but, the bottom line is, utah's offense overall was not that good last year. they were terrible in the games that were against anyone with half a defense. (and byu was even worse...) if they were any good, why did they need a new OC?

i'm a byu fan, sure. but i'm also realistic. i am not bitter about this hire in the least. in fact, i hope the U plays well, except when they play the Y. i don't think there are any BYU fans I know that are bitter about this hire. BYU is in good shape without Chow, and he's had some success since he left (and some failures...) but no BYU fan i know is actually jealous he's at the U, or has ever wanted him back at the Y...

i read this earlier and laughed - "norm chow has finally done the impossible. he's made every byu and utah fan happy."

Just having Chow would really help recruiting too...

you really think recruits who are wavering will sign because of him? kinda doubt it's that big of a deal.

4-Star WR Recruit Impressed by Chow, Signs With Utes
http://bleacherreport.com/tb/b83HT

Anthony Denham, a 6-foot-6 receiver out of East Los Angeles Junior College, was torn between Central Florida, Cincinnati and Utah until he met with new Utah offensive coordinator Norm Chow, who gave him a comparison he couldn't pass up.

"He told me he would treat me like Mike Williams," Denham said of the former USC receiver who went on to the NFL. "He put him in a lot of good isolated situations and he scored a lot so I liked that idea."

That idea was enough to sway Denham to Utah. He will sign with the Utes on Wednesday, giving Utah its fourth receiver in the signing class.

Denham said getting to know co-coordinator Aaron Roderick and Utah's future in the Pac-10 were other factors that went into his decision.

"I felt comfortable there and I liked the coaches and I liked the idea of them going to the Pac-10, that is going to be a good experience."

Denham said he would play wherever the Utes need him, but likes the idea of testing opponents across the middle.

"That area is always open, I don't mind it, he said. "I'll be a team player."

Between Central Florida, Cincinnati, and Utah....seems like a no brainer to go to Utah.

Those are the schools he was interested in... not the schools he had a choice between. Most 4-star players have a dozen schools to choose from. 4-Star recuits are high value players.

I don't believe Utah and BYU combined have a dozen 4 star recruits in their current programs.

Utah now has three 4-star recruits scheduled for the 2011 class. BYU currently has one.

Now why a kid would make his selection between Central Florida, Cincinnati, and Utah is beyond me. Probably just the schools he felt most comfortable with.

U. fans see sharp increase to season ticket prices
February 11th, 2011
By Sarah Dallof - KSL

SALT LAKE CITY -- The price of being a loyal University of Utah fan just went up. Season ticket prices are going to be quite a bit more expensive next season.

There's no questioning the enthusiasm of Ute fans. Football games are packed, and there's red as far as the eye can see. But Friday night the color was green, as season ticket holders received mailers with the new prices of their tickets.

"Basically, all of our games are premium games now. With that comes an increase in tickets," said Liz Abel, associate athletic director at the University of Utah.

Abel says the U.'s athletic department is trying to bridge the budget gap between the university and their new peers in the PAC-12. They're not relying solely on increased income from ticket sales -- corporate sponsorship, fundraising and apparel contracts are also playing big roles.

U. officials expect most fans will hang onto their hard-earned seats.

"We're trading Wyoming and New Mexico for UCLA and Oregon state -- can't be upset about that," season ticket holder Tyler Campbell said.

Reaction from fans was mixed as they mentally calculated just how much was too much for them to pay.

"The economy isn't doing too hot right now," said season ticket holder Dylan MacLeod. I'm not exactly getting raises at work, so [I'm] not happy."

KSL Newsradio's "The Nightside Project" tackled the topic Friday night, taking calls and texts from longtime season ticket holders.

"Mine were going up 250 percent, but I'm not going to renew," one caller said. "It's not worth it."

A texter wrote in saying, ‘You want to play with the big boys? Pay like the big boys. I don't mind."

Once current season ticket holders make the decision whether to renew or not, sales will open up to the public. If you're willing to pay, this may give you a shot at season tickets in an area you wouldn't have been able to get before.

Utah signs 380-pound lineman
March, 1, 2011

Utah just got bigger in more ways than one.

The school announced the signing of Po’u Palelei, a 6-foot-5, 380-pound offensive lineman, on Tuesday. He is completing academic coursework at Salt Lake Community College and will join the team in the fall, according to a press release.

Palelei was a highly regarded recruit in 2006. He played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl and originally picked Arizona State over Washington and Texas A&M.

Curious, (Colorado State graduate here) is there pressure for the University of Utah to form a rivalry with University of Colorado? Both new teams to the conference, geographical proximity, etc. Or will Utah keep scheduling games against BYU as its traditional rival (This is kind of what CU and CSU do since they aren't in the same conference)?

Iceaxe

My 2 cents... The PAC 12 is hoping Utah and Colorado form a rivalry. Back when folks still rode dinosaurs to the game they were rivals in the old Skyline conference. If you look at how many times Utah has played a particular opponent you will see Colorado near the top of the list (top 3 if I remember correctly).

Now my gut feeling is Utah and Colorado will NOT become major rivals, at least not in the near future. I expect USC to be Utah's biggest game of the PAC 12 schedule, at least for now.

And I expect BYU will fade as a major opponent and rival for Utah for a number of reasons. For one the game will no longer carry the importance to Utah, it is now basically a preseason game. I don't see the match-up being yearly in the not to distant future because of Utah's conference schedule they will need to drop BYU some years to schedule other major programs. And honestly, the way the BCS is setup its not in Utah's best interest to play BYU every year, you need some cupcakes on the schedule. I wouldn't be surprised to see Utah alternate years between playing BYU and Utah State. At least until the current BCS system meets the end it deserves.

YMMV

CarpeyBiggs

i don't think utah and byu stop playing. my guess is that they will be the first game of the season every year now... both universities have expressed interest in continuing the rivalry.

rest of your post sounds about right. except that USC won't give a sh!t about the utes. that's a one way rivalry my friend... :lol8:

FWIW: if you follow Utah football you may have noticed the athletic department has already sent up the trail balloon about not playing BYU every year. That is why I think you will see it become every other year somewhere down the road.

AChrysler
08-23-2011, 12:40 AM
Interesting... in theory CSU is supposed to be an 'easy' first game for CU every year, but because the rivalry is so heated when CU loses it looks pretty bad for them.

The BCS is a pretty crazy scheme; I always felt bad for Utah not getting respect in the MWC and I had hoped eventually the MWC would either join or be fundamental in destroying the BCS.

Either way I won't mind watching Utah beat CU once a year and I hope to see Utah succeed in its new environment!

Iceaxe
08-23-2011, 07:13 AM
To become a rivalry the game has to mean something special. For CU and Utah to become rival's they will need to meet several years in a row where the game decides the Southern Division. Or have one of the teams keep knocking the other out of contention in the Southern Division, otherwise it's just anther game IMHO.

accadacca
08-23-2011, 08:24 AM
IMO, as mentioned. Utah is going to have less and less to play for against BYU. I hate to say it and see it potentialy end, but who has more to gain (BYU) and who has more to lose (Utah)?

Ron Tongaonevai's wife dies in wreck

SALT LAKE CITY -- Team officials say the wife of a Utah football player was killed in a car accident about 90 minutes after the Utes' game against Montana State.

The team released a statement saying Janelle Tongaonevai died about 10:30 p.m. Thursday in West Valley City after Utah beat Montana State, 27-10.

Ron Tongaonevai is a junior defensive lineman from West Valley City. The couple was married in the summer of 2010.

The team is planning to go ahead with postgame meetings Friday but says no players or coaches will be available to the media out of respect for the Tongaonevai family.

A team tribute and funeral plans are in the works and will be announced later.

Coach Kyle Whittingham says in a statement that everyone's thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Major props to Ute fans everywhere...not for the result of the game, but the behavior in real life and forums afterward. I came to work on Monday just dreading the heap of crap I was going to take for that embarrassing performance on Saturday, but was pleasantly surprised. Sure people joked here and there but I expected much worse. Everything has been pretty classy. And half the people showing class are my 13-15 year old students...that's impressive.

Is it due to the conference change? Totally lopsided score? Whatever it was I thought Utah fans were much classier winners this year than any other year I've witnessed.

FYI - I know BYU fans can be crappy/classless winners as well. This is meant as a 100% sincere compliment to Utah/Utah fans. No backhanded intentions.

Yeah not sure whats up, but I have witnessed the same thing. Gotta be the lopsided score. The Utes had mercy on the Cougs at the end and could have scored again. They took a knee near the end and even gave it back near the redzone. The backups came in with half the 4th left too...yadda, yadda.

For a change he seemed to be playing with some confidence. He actually was throwing the long ball for once and accurately at that! That interception was a pretty poor attempt at a pass. I definitely feel that we beat ourselves in that game. You can't turn the ball over 3 times in the red zone and expect to win. Not to mention once in their red zone second into the game! Just gotta say.... I'm lovin' this PAC 12 stuff.... Every games is a dog fight and every game carries so much importants.

Before the season began I thought to myself if the Utes can go 7-5 and get to a bowl it will be a successful foray into the PAC 12. Now with one game left Utah is still in the hunt for a Rose Bowl birth and failing that they stand a very good chance of playing Oklahoma in the Holiday Bowl.... ya gotta love.

:2thumbs:

Getting to any bowl is important to your program because you get and extra two weeks of practice, and the Utes have always used part of that two weeks preparing second team players for next year.

Anyhoo.... here is the PAC 12 bowl aflilliations in order of importants for those interested.

1. Rose Bowl
2. Valero Alamo Bowl
3. Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl
4. Hyundai Sun Bowl
5. Maaco Bowl Las Vegas
6. Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl
7. New Mexico Bowl

It is crazy how things have changed over the past 4 weeks. I might sound crazy, but I would rather see the Utes head straight to a bowl game and skip the beat down in the championship game. :ne_nau:

I don't know... there is only going to be one first ever PAC 12 Championship game... it would be nice to make an appearance.

If Utah gets the Holiday Bowl I might have to book a flight. San Diego is nice this time of year.

I guess any real fan would want to give it a go against the big dogs.

However taking positive momentum (from the regular season) into the bowl would be good too.

the ute defense is stout. they always have a chance, IMO. couple of turnovers go their way, and they can beat anyone in the PAC12. i'd like to see them make a run at the rose bowl, though holiday bowl against the sooners sounds pretty damn good too...

Makes it even more brutal to watch both Arizona State and UCLA lose. Utah controlled their own destiny and blew it to one of the worst teams in the conference.

The loss will probably send the team bowling in El Paso instead of beautiful San Diego, and cost them 2 million in bowl payout.

Latest I heard was Utah vs. Texas in the Holiday bowl. So maybe San Diego still? I am having trouble justifying spending the money to go after the miserable performance this weekend. It would be hard to swallow the cost if they didn't show up again!

Washington and Cal both won their final games, have the same record as Utah, and both beat Utah during the season... I expect it to shake out about like this. That loss to Colorado was huge to Utah on so many levels....

Rose Bowl: Oregon vs. Big Ten
Fiesta Bowl: Stanford vs. Big 12
Alamo Bowl: Washington vs. Big 12
Holiday Bowl: California vs. Big 12
Sun Bowl: Utah vs. ACC
Las Vegas Bowl: Arizona State vs. Mountain West
Kraft Fight Hunger: No team vs. ACC or Army
New Mexico Bowl: No team vs. Mountain West

It doesn't look like the Pac 12 will be able to fill all its bowl commitments this year. Now if UCLA beats Oregon next week this all goes out the window. The funny thing is UCLA wins the PAC 12 South but if they lose in the championship game they are not bowl eligible at 6-7.

That would have been fun to watch... except for the POS banner taking up 1/4 of the screen made it impossible.
