Another good guess, but not Mineral Bottom road--west of the Green River. Although this is a road, I don't think many full sized vehicles travel it anymore.

The Story:

I started working at Snowbird in 2002 and rode a lot but kept my feet mostly on the ground (or Pow rather) despite most of my friends dropping cliffs all over the mountain. On 2.21.2005 there was a ton of new snow, I was having a great pow day and also expanding my cliff jumping ability because the landings were so soft. All of the cliffs I did I had seen from other angles or had seen others jump them. Around mid day I met up with a good friend who jumped big cliffs all the time. He took me down to the cliff in the arrow and told me where to jump. I wasn't feeling it at all because I had never seen the bottom. A patroller was watching me just below. My friend told me to go straight and I decided to go a little left since it looked like less of a distance. The cliff was about 45 feet we determined. My rookie move to the left landed me directly in another guys bomb hole so the snow was all blown out already and I also turned in the air so I landed pretty much parallel to the mountain (not good). My face hit my knee on impact. It hurt. I tumbled and righted my self and knew I was messed up. Adrenaline allowed me to snowboard slowly down to the bottom of the Mineral lift, up to Hidden Peak, down tram in pain and at the base I was hurting bad. Went to instacare and they told me it was a lower back sprain. 2 days later, the radiologist called and said I had a broken back. Compressed 3 vertebrae (chipped off the edges of L1, L2, L3). In a back brace for 5 weeks and then back on the hill. Very happy I'm not paralyzed.

My face after knee goggle. Will have the triangle scar for life.

Today I'm back at home from Utah. We have had a wonderful time, a lot of fun and above of 100 mi of hiking in Moab area, Cedar Mesa and GSENM.

Scott P

Go to that area, where a small town and river have the same name.

That does narrow it down. The only areas I can think of where the Navajo Sandstone has that same coloring is in the Upper Paria, Upper Escalant and parts of/around Capitol Reef. So it would have to be somewhere in the upper Escalante drainage.

I'm not guessing though, since I don't know the specific drainage. I would say far upper Death Hollow has that coloring, but it looks too shalow.

I guess I could guess Phipps Wash, but it the coloring doesn't look right. If it isn't Phipps (and it probably isn't), it would almost surely be higher in the Escalante drainage.

zzyzx
05-21-2012, 06:28 AM
Escalante area is right.
You been guessing right too, Scott.

It's Phipps Wash in the direction to the TH at Old Sheffield Road (Spencer Flat). There are beautiful sandstone colorations here in lime, yellow and pink. The downhill into the wash is a little steep, but fair.
The hike from that site of the Phipps is a lot of fun. A hidden arch and big pool are along the way to Phipps Arch.

joshua tree is not on the east side of escalante.

ok, i give up. so no one gets it. it is an old mine not far past the silver falls turnoff on the way out to middle moody trailhead. you go through a gate and it's high on the east side of the road. i know a bunch of you out there have driven right by it.

first one with a new photo is next. GO!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll take the opportunity and will stick with the mining theme.

I know some will get this easily but others may have to spend some time discovering. Very cool spot.

Old rail pits from just off the Pony Express trail in Tooolee country.
Bout half way between Faust and the HWY by 5mile wreckreation.
Or better still 7.3 miles west of Wild Bill Canyon for us old folks?
Find that one on a map I dare you.

OR just plain west of manning for the rest of us.

I'm most likely wrong but I have not been up there since the early 70's and have know Idea but it is just a guess.

Good guess, but not correct.

A whole lot more south and east than Tooolee.

In fact, it's about 45 minutes from Green River, the Utah town.

I'll add some more clues if that doesn't do it.

Correct Old Jeeper

Adjacent to the "tractor tire" junction.

Just down the road from this is some awesome petrified wood. Some of it has eroded away from the cliff wall and is left exposed the way it was left eons ago. Some even protruding out of the cliff wall a few feet. Really cool.

OK Jeeper, your turn.

xjblue
07-30-2012, 04:04 PM
First clue: (I'll post a second soon if this doesn't get it going again)

When we stopped there some folks, a friendly couple who live there in a small house through the summer and ranch the place with a son, showed us the fixed up old bunk house next to their place and pointed out what direction the old ranch house used to stand. Remains of a chimney are all that apparently remain according to the man. The Hay shed was pretty much unchanged. They rattled off famous outlaws including Posey and the Wild Bunch who used the place. They encouraged us to enjoy the view to the south toward Monument Valley out from the bunkhouse porch.

UN-Educated guessing: to enjoy the view south, toward MV I was thinking it would be somewhere on Cedar Mesa (I'm not familiar with this area at all)??? But with the pine tree in upper left I would have to say more up around the Cottonwood Wash area west of Blanding???

Awesome! zzyzx you know your stuff! Correct, the road goes up Wahweap and on to Nipple Spring and beyond. For what was in the picture, I was looking more for the ponds at middle right, but I didn't word it very well, so close enough. I'm not positive what they are used for now, but those ponds (or some very similar) were used as a fish hatchery years ago and I spent many a hot summer evening as a kid cooling off in them.
