I'm not a fan of two QB's.....

That never works except perhaps in special situations (Tebow his first year and Asiata/Louks at Utah) when teams know you are going to run.

My take is Neilson is currently the better QB but the coug's are afraid Heaps will bolt for anther team if they don't play him... thoughts? Does anyone other then Bronco think this will work?

Washington in 7 days.... Steve Sarkisian is doing a great job of leading the Huskies out of Purgatory. You know that whooping BYU would have to be special to him.

you are right, 2 qbs never works. and it won't for byu. nelson isn't that good.

however, heaps is going to be the much better quarterback. but he's never played a big game. coach has limited options. he's gonna ease heaps into the big scenarios, see how he does, and keep adjusting his philosophy.

i'd give him a few games, then there will be a true quarterback. this is the problem with having a great freshman qb, who has zero experience. you don't really know how they will perform. nelson is a known quantity, and he can handle the big game. so the only option is to start him, until heaps is also a known quantity.

sucks, and byu will lose some games because of it. but that's the nature of the beast with a young qb.

but it doesn't suck nearly as bad as their affiliation with the mwc. :angryfire:

Personally, I would have started Heaps. You cant blame a kid for being inexperienced. Give him a chance. I don't see the point in making him second string behind a mediocre Nelson if Heaps is just going to end up with the starting job down the road.

We'll see tho if this works.

Sept 4 cant come any sooner.

I would start Heaps. The comminity is behind him and would have been patient. They wont be patient with a 2 QB system...already been there. I pick UW this week.

Iceaxe

I pick UW this week.

Tough call.... It's been over two years since UW last won a road game, but I'm a big Jake Locker fan and would like to see him do well after deciding to stay his senior year.

UW and Locker were kinda screwed out of a chance to win last time they played BYU. That was the game UW was penalized when Locker tossed the ball high in the air after a TD. At the time I thought it was a questionable call and I hated to see the game decided by an official because a player was happy he just made a great play.

My other thought is the sooner BYU gets hammered the sooner they will dump the lame two QB system. If they have some success with it they will probably drag it out a couple more games.

Scott Card

That call for celebration was made by a PAC 10 official was it not? Nice... wonder if he is still working the circuit. :haha:

I think the QB thing is buying time. I have followed the camp and from what everything I heard it sounds like the two were neck and neck. Given that, I may just lean to the young gun rather than Nelson. I take Bronco at his word that no clear leader emerged. So, I'd like to see Heaps and Nelson both in at the same time to really mess with the defense's head.

Alright kitty's you're up.....
It is funny you said that. I was just thinking how tough we all are in talking about our teams in the pre season and with all the conference realignment stuff going on there actually was plenty to talk about. Almost made baseball season enjoyable. :haha: Talk is now over and time to see what the team is really about. There are so many new players this year that I am really excited, at least the day before the game, to see how all this will shake out. Let's see, new and untested QB's, running backs, TE's, ILB's, D line.... etc. About the only part of the team that stays mostly intact is the O line. That is huge with a new QB. Part of me is quite nervous but I am mostly excited to see what this team is made of.

The rubber meets the road tomorrow.... I hope we fair at least as well as Utah. I expect a bunch of mistakes like in the Utah game.

Iceaxe
09-03-2010, 10:38 AM
The part that strikes me the most about this game is it consists of two similar programs.... both have won a National Championship and enjoyed great success, and both have suffered recently through some lean times.... after tomorrows game one team will feel a lot better about being back on track.....

The Crowton years.... :lol8:.... it amazes me that one guy can do so much damage to a successful program in so little time.....

I think BYU's offense can score with either of their current QB's and the media just keeps trying to create a story and make a big deal out of it....

What the media should really be pointing out and talking about is BYU's defense. That defense sucked, big time.... no speed, players out of position, players making poor reads.... Jimbo Fisher must be licking his chops about now....

no kidding. as if tons of BYU fans weren't already annoying, they are in complete meltdown mode now. the sky is falling! fire bronco! start heaps!

but, i was raised on byu football, have always love it, and naturally hated utah. after going to byu, i learned to hate the institution. then, i learned i hated a lot of the fans at BYU. and now i find myself starting to hate watching the team too. i thought it would never come to this...

i love byu football. i just hate all the other stuff around it. more and more i think i am realizing what the team is all about. and it isn't always about winning. makes it hard to cheer for 'em anymore.

Gordon Monson is the biggest douche in Utah sports.... he is the candyass kid that was always picked last in gym so now he writes about it like he is some type of authority.... I could make a descent living just betting against everything he states as fact.

I just got home from the Reno Air Races... Friday night we watched the Wolf Pack chew Cal up and spit them out..... BYU is in big trouble this week.... the Wolf Pack is a damn good team.... and they run the pistol offense which I love (old school single wing but they stack the QB and RB instead of placing them side-by-side).

At first I wasn't a big fan of the Wolf Pack joining the MWC. But after spending time in Reno and watching one of their games I'm all for it. It's a great program and the city of Reno loves and supports the Pack. That stadium was sold out and rocking! Half the city of Reno was wearing Wolf Pack gear Friday.

Scott Card
09-22-2010, 12:53 PM
And with that O-line providing such stellar protection you have to ask.... who is QB3? Ahh, yeah. The line was supposed to be the bright spot on offense this year with the new quarterback and running backs. Hopefully, now that they are only going to be running one offense, not two, they can get the reps in to have their protection nailed down. This year's team is a work in progress. I will say that if Heaps lives up to half of the hype, he will be really, really good by the time he is a senior. The dude throws better balls than any other quarterback I have seen at BYU. I don't think the receivers are quite used to the 18 year old rocket passes yet. They seem to drop a bunch.

I just hope BYU gets the kinks worked out before the Utah game so that it is a game. But first things first. Nevada looks to be scary good. Glad I don't bet.

It was fun being around the NV fans last week.... this is a huge game to them. Their thought is a win on the road at BYU validates they have arrived at the next level. That would mean they beat a ranked Cal team at home followed up the next week with a big win on the road against a traditional power.....

Here's my prediction - BYU Football is heading for a very long spell as a bottom feeder.

Two of the main ingredients for being a good football team are Good Coaches and Good Players.... and BYU doesn't have the players in the system.

When a new coach takes over a program it takes him 4 years to get "his guys" completely into the system.... except with BYU it takes 6 years for a new coach to get "his guys" completely into the system because of missions. This is the first year that BYU is completely Bronco's recruits... and you could see this coming for the past two years.... their is no speed on the team. All the speed on the team for the past couple of years were Crowton's guys.... Crowton might not have been a good head coach but he knew about recruiting speed.

Bronco is a major character guy.... you know the deal... "character guy" is not the best athlete but he works harder then everyone else to earn a starting spot, has good values, gets good grades. Some football coaches call them overachievers. I'm a big believe in having a nice mix of "character guy" on any team, it makes the entire team work harder and bond. But the down side of having an entire team made up of "character guy" is that no matter how much you train or how hard you work.... you can not learn speed.

For the next few years BYU will beat up on what's left of the WAC, which isn't much when Utah State is starting to look like your new flagship.... and they will lose to good teams.... probably continue to earn a berth in the "No One Cares Bowl" with a record over 50% because of the crappy WAC teams they will be playing and because Bronco is a good coach (but poor recruiter).

I don't see this as a great time to be a BYU fan.

SDSU's bread and butter is their running game. BYU has been pathetic against the run and is allowing 259 yards rushing per game.

SDSU is averaging 39 points a game with BYU averaging 15.

If the kitties don't wake up tomorrow, it could get ugly. When your not sure if you can beat SDSU at home...well that's a sad state of affairs.

SDSU is favored by 5.

THE BAD
SDSU has a good team this year.

SDSU has had two weeks to prepare for the Cougars.

Rocky Long is SDSU's defensive coordinator and runs a 3-3-5 defense that he pioneered and this will be Jake's first time playing against the 3-3-5. Rocky will be throwing everything in the book at the young QB.

BYU's pass protection sucks.

BYU's receivers are slow and so far have something like 20 dropped passes this year. Talk about bricks for hands.

BYU's corners couldn't play press coverage against my grandmother, the base BYU defense is now 15-yard cushions.

THE GOOD
The Cougars are at home, at altitude, where they usually play well.

I think I'll put my money on SDSU

I am excited to watch another cougar football game. Based on how this season started and where they ended, I am pretty excited BYU is in a bowl, any bowl. This season could have easily ended in disaster but the cougs had a pretty good turnaround. I would say the cougars have a better chance to win than the Utes. :haha: As for the matchup, it is not a good game per se but what is really valuable is that Jake Heaps and other freshmen just had 3 extra weeks of practice. I must say I am excited for next year. I am really curious how Heaps sophomore year will go. I think the defense will be better and we get most players back on both sides of the ball.

I am not sure what is going on either. It is a little weird. I am wondering if he is just seeing who is committed and offering an open door to those who are inclined to look elsewhere anyway. Like everything with Bronco, he holds the important cards pretty close to the vest. All the talk has come from "sources" close to the program, perhaps even some of the assistant coaches. As far as the offensive coaches go, I do think some pretty poor calls and decisions were made in the Utah game in particular as well as other games this season. Who knows... certainly not me.

BYU does a lousy job of keeping internal crap on the down low.... every time this type of crap goes down the source speaking out are usually correct....

The BYU to the WAC deal would have worked if the MWC hadn't of caught wind of it with enough time to act and scuttle the move.... everyone knows Anae is gone... but this is impacting the total offensive... If I were Reynolds or Domain I don't think I would be happy with the treatment.... and both the coaches would have a big impact if they depart for greener pastures and a little respect.

This is what is silly to me about how BYU handles things.... EVERYONE has known this was coming for a couple weeks.....

Or just pull the trigger after the decision has been made.... because.... The only way three people can keep a secret is if two of them are dead....

But I agree... shut up.... because whomever is running their yapper down at the Y has not done their football program any favors.....
