Yesterday, my son and I went up to the top of Gobbler's Knob, via the Bowman trail. The lower portion of the trail is nice, for those who haven't been on it before, because most of the hike is in the shade. I'm not sure how many miles it is long, maybe 6-7? I'm estimating that because of how long it took us to get down. The last stretch going up the ridge to Gobbler's is tough and steep, but the view is amazing. We began at 7:15, before the gate that goes to the picnic area where the trailhead is was even open, thus we added about a half mile on to our total hike. We were back down by 4 p.m. which included spending a lot of time yakking on the way up and eating lunch up on top. Still gotta try the Alexander Basin route, but it wasn't in the cards this time. Actually the original plan was Twin Peaks, but my son needed to get home earlier than our estimation of how long that hike would take us, so we opted for Gobbler's. That too, took longer than my original estimate, but I wasn't expecting the tough hike at the top, having never been there before. The steepness is actually why I chose the Bowman route instead of Alexander Basin--because I wasn't up for a lot of steep--so Twins would've probably done me in. Anyway, it was a great hike, beautiful, and breathtaking in more ways than one.
