The wife and I started hiking last night at about 9:30, we hiked up to the Twisted Forest which is around 10,000'. Lots and Lots of Bristlecone pines and the darkest skies one could want. There are 2 perseids in the shot.

hmmm, I can't seem to get this one to upload sharp. It's losing a lot on download, I don't usually have that problem.

nice kurt
what did you use to paint the foreground?
A "D"cell flashlight that was way to bright. Big learning curve, this night shooting.
I'm thinking a headlamp might of been much more adequate.

Nice pic.
I too am struggling with ideal ways to paint the foreground. I think what you did actually looks pretty good though... probably because it had an incandescent bulb in the flashlight? Fire seems to look the best but it's not easy to always have it available. The white/blue LED's tend to look a lot like a flash went off to me. I just bought a new headlamp that can switch to 4 different colors so maybe that might work better?

Thanks Nick, I'm thinking a "AA" size maglight might have better control.
I've definetely hit the wall with my 450d. I need some mo-ISO.
I think my next camera will be a 5dII or a 1ds mkII or III. Just need funding.
The problem I always run into with a flashlight/headlamp is lack of shadow mostly due to waving it around "painting".

So what works for you summit?
I have a canon 220ex speedlite that I use manually typically at a 45

How far out does the speedlight reach?
lol@a "few" painting tools.
30-40' max maybe (?) really depends on ambient light
this shot was around 35 feet - http://www.flickr.com/photos/summit42/4362575841/
I really need to venture my way into the world of flashes... my 220ex does not even work with my 7D so its time for an upgrade.

I have the Canon 430 EX II speed light that says it's range is over 140 feet. I'll have to give it a try, I didn't even think about using it for this. Thanks once again Summit.
