I don't know where to put this since it is a running race but thought that since much of the uphill parts for the runners were hiking and since I hiked all over to get the photos, this worked.
The Speedgoat 50k is a brutal 50k foot race that is in its 4th year now. Karl Meltzer is the race director and a personal friend. He has won the Wasatch 100 6 times and run more than 50 ultra races. This race is a bit masochistic but I think he takes pride in it.
50k (31 miles)
12,000 feet of elevation gain
12,000 feet of elevation loss
Mostly steep up or down sections and mostly at Snowbird (some out American Fork Canyon)
200 signed up
185 started
152 finished (80%)
I've taken photos of it the past 4 years but this year was especially cool because my wife ran it. She has run for years but had never done anything more than a flat 15 miles before training for this. She did one 20 mile train in Millcreek and Big Cottonwood Canyons but those trails are much softer and flatter. She rocked the race and had fun doing it as well. 2 days later, she hiked the Salt Lake Overlook in Millcreek Canyon (I don't think I'd be able to walk!). To give you an idea, a normal 50k would take a decent runner about 4 or 5 hours. This took 9 hours for my wife. The range was 5 1/2 to 12 hours for all runners.
by the way, the wildflowers were fantastic.
Anyways, extremely proud of my wife and very impressive to everyone out there.
