Trail routing apps for your phone

What do you use? What keyword do you search for?

I've heard of Trail Guru and Endomondo I'm sure there are a hundred more.

Do you always trace your trail route? By the way if you do upload it into Google Maps http://www.bogley.com/forum/showthread.php?39098-Embed-Google-Maps-in-a-bogley-post&p=400410&viewfull=1#post400410

Do the free ones work just as good?

I've been playing with "Trails" http://trails.lamouroux.de/

It's a pretty robust app that has many features. I bought it for my trip next week so I'll report back at the end of the month to let you know how I like it. I bought 2 back up batteries for my iPhone from Monoprice so I could let the app run for really long hikes.

You might want to check out MintyBoost (v.3) (http://www.ladyada.net/make/mintyboost/). It's a USB charger run on 2 AA batteries that charges most USB devices in a ghetto-made Altoids battery back for less than $10. Plus the good-part is, the AA batteries are easily replaceable. Unfortunately, the AA batteries capacity is not a huge mAh - but it charges my iPhone 3GS up to 75%. Just if you are interested...

"Trails" does export in GPX, yes.

I got the battery back-up for $14 from Monoprice and the same (with a different label) was $65 elswhere. They're 2200mah so they should last a while.

What OS are you asking about?

on my Android phone I have two free apps that do this...

GPS tracker - My position is transmitted every 30seconds to a website and I can save the route as a KML. Pro - if my phone is stolen I can find it. Con - It requires a data (3g) connection to work.

Journey Tracker - Very basic, turn it on, it starts recording, stop it and it spits out a KML file.. no data connection required.

Also I have google latitude enabled on my phone. My position is transmitted to the google maps of approved contacts who can see my avatar floating around on their computers or phones. I have not used it to try and record a route but I can vouch for it being awesome when you are on a road trip. My brother had it enabled on his Iphone and we were always able to see where each other was during a trip to the bay area.

MyTracker for the Droid uploads to google maps in a snap and works pretty sweet.:wink:
