I want to convert video files from P&S camera to something I can burn on a DVD or CD that can play on most anything. Nothing I have will play a MOV file. What is the best format to convert to?

Personally I like avi files. They play in my DVD player (although they might not in older dvd players) and my xbox, and obviously Windows Media Player. I use AVS Video Converter 6.3 and I live that alot.

How important is the original audio? If not much, try Windows Live Movie Maker

Once converted, do these programs have a burn function?

I've had good luck with this program as well

What operating system are you on? Converting to DVD for TV will put it in a whole 'nother format.

Windows 7
playing back on a TV would be high on the list. Is AVI an acceptable format for that?

I would just use the Windows DVD Maker that comes with Windows 7, it's pretty straight forward.

Thanks Beech
One more little question.
Say my friend didn't know enough to hold his camera in a horizontal plane, and filmed with the camera in a vertical(portrait) mode. Is there something to rotate the entire video?
Just trying to learn---er, let my friend know not to do that anymore.

Using the Windows DVD Maker you can import it/add it to the storyboard, then right click on it > effects > Rotate

Windows Live Movie Maker can rotate your footage for you too.

Picasa will also be able to rotate the video for you

I downloaded windows live. It rotated the video.
It created a WMV. file. Do I convert that to AVI and burn?

Any Windows program that can burn will (should? Never say never.) be able to use the WMV file. No reason to use AVI in between. The program will create the Mpeg format (which is what DVDs use) directly from the WMV.
