Heading to Lake Powell for 5 days this weekend. Looking to do some fishing after my arms get tired of holding onto a ski rope. I've never been fishing there and have heard a lot about stripers and boils and what fun they are to catch. I did a little research onlline and learned a little about shads and went to the store (if you can call it that) and picked up what I think are some good shad imitation lures.

Anyone care to offer some info/advice on chasing stripers and being able to put a few on a grill. All I have ever really gone after in my life are trout. We will be putting in at Bullfrog and hoping to find a beach/alcove to camp in, but don't necessarily have a direction picked out that we are going to go. Need to stay somewhere close initially because we have to come back to the Marina Sunday to pick up some more of our group coming down.

Any useful info is great, thanks. :hail2thechief:

Hi Jared
Don't know much about what lures to use, but last week we saw a boil and pulled up to the side of it(within easy casting range)
We watched the stripers work the shad to the surface, fun to watch. It doesn't seem hard to spot boils on the lake when you don't have a fishing pole.:haha:

Kurt,
Nice. Been to the lake many times, but only swimming, and have never taken a fishing pole myself. This will be the first time out on the water and looking forward to it. I enjoyed your post on the other thread about your trip down there.

Cool, nothing like being out on the lake, I'm hoping to get a boat in the near future(probably next Summer if things get better.)
I grew up on the lake, been going there since the early 70's. My parent's always had a boat.
Did I mention I have a serious case of jealous!!
Have a great time, looking forward to your report.

I just picked up my first boat this year and am stoked to get out and play on Powell. Talk about Jealous, I've been living in the area for 10 years watching boats pass through every summer. I am excited to go play, and maybe explore some side canyons. Really excited to try out the Striper fishing. Watched a video on Youtube last night where a family pulled in one after another in a 6 minute video clip. I hope it isn't that easy, but I would love to fight some big hogs.

Well, not much to report off this trip. We pretty much got skunked, I guess we just don't know what we are doing. Between 5 of us that were fishing we caught 5 stripers and 2 small mouths in a 5 day period. We had more fun water skiing than fishing. Guess we'll have to improve on our technique for next time or just stick to skiing. The ones we did catch were released and unfortunately no one had a camera with them when we did catch them. We were able to feed some carp that were hanging around the boat one day.
