The Topeka, Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church, which is headed by Fred Phelps and which has made headlines over the past few years for a series of protests of events such as the funerals of Meet the Press host Tim Russert (because of his Catholicism and what they termed his "tolerance of homosexuality") and Jerry Falwell (whom they termed a "false prophet') and perhaps most notably the funerals of American servicemen killed overseas, have announced that they plan to picket the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con from 1:15 pm to 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 22.

The reason they're going to protest the con? We think it's best described in their own words, as posted on their website:

"Are you kidding?! If these people would spend even some of the energy that they spend on these comic books, reading the Bible, well no high hopes here. They have turned comic book characters into idols, and worship them they do! Isaiah 2:8 Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made: 9 And the mean man boweth down, and the great man humbleth himself: therefore forgive them not. It is time to put away the silly vanities and turn to God like you mean it. The destruction of this nation is imminent - so start calling on Batman and Superman now, see if they can pull you from the mess that you have created with all your silly idolatry."

I kindof agree there. There are alot of things I could be doing that would be better for myself/family/humanity than what I normally choose to do.

I'm assuming he's talking about how their church's founder is a democrat, but I hope this doesn't turn into a political debate. Splitting and moving threads for political reasons gets old.

Anyhoo.... I wonder what hobby you can have that they won't protest.

picketing

Comic-con protest is just funny but if those bastards ever came to the funeral of a friend of mine killed in combat I’m quite sure I would land in jail.

Hypocrites. If they'd spend half the time working in a soup kitchen that they spend working the picket lines and the media they'd actually make a positive difference in the world.

'Positive wuuuuh?' It's not about that, it about control and the assertion of it. (Although, given the amount of traveling they do I tend to suspect it's also about anonymous sex with professionals in town outside of Westboro.)

Revenge of the nerds! While the Westboro fanatics protested Comic-con over the weekend the geeks protested back! Including a protest chant that went; "What do we want? GAY SEX. When do we want it? NOW!" Ahahahahahahahahaha.
See Pictures.

Alright, this is enough. Normally I wouldn't go to this level, but I'm going to have to dig out the Veron-T Disruptor.

A Starcraft question and an obscure Star Trek reference within minutes! If you don’t say something nice about Star Wars real quick I’m going to accuse you of the kind of bigotry only geeks are ever guilty of!

Ah sorry! Tried to think of some witty reference involving a hydrospanner but I was at a loss! I do still remember standing in a *long* line with my dad and my brother to go see the original Star Wars movie.
