This is listed on the online page, who knows what is going on?

Upper Left Fork (Das Boot) has been closed for the following reason(s):
Condition: Temporary closure due to current wildlife issue. Slot canyons are closed when a Flash Flood Warning is issued until 8 hours after the warning is ended.
However, you can continue to make reservations at your own risk.

Dead deer stuck in slot?

Mating season closure for West Zion Pygmy Ibis?

Rampaging radioactive helmetless bears?

Abseiling mutant zombie rattlesnakes?

I heard it was due to a trapped, injured, irate, bull elk. Fo rizzle.

My wife and I almost did Das Boot on Friday, when the closure didn't exist yet. Sure glad we weren't the ones to find this out the hard way. It would be interesting to hear from who did.

I heard they were sending rangers in to shoot the elk and haul it out. Should be open soon.

:haha: Gawd I would love to see that trip report. "And we rounded a corner, this 400lb elk charged us in the canyon with no place to run".

DANG!!! and just when you think you've heard it all.... :eek2:

This should be a good lesson in picking your canyoneering partners.... You don't have to run faster then a bull elk.... you just have to be able to run faster than your partner.... :haha:

Ever wonder how Beartrap Canyon got it's name?

The first time we hiked up it (when I was a kid) there was a big buck ahead of us and we boxed it in (we didn't know about the waterfall then). It was then rather obvious how Beartrap got it's name, but I'm glad it was a big deer for us rather than a big bear!

Talked to a ranger at the BC desk today. The elk is deceased and will remain in the canyon to decompose in a natural state.

Bummer, I wish it was logistically possible to let it rot where other animals could "enjoy" it. I bet the coyotes are leaning over the edge drooling right now.

In this day and age, it is rare to see men be men. I salute the rangers who went in and strangled it with their bare hands. Much more manly than relying on silly projectile weapons.

When I'm really old (like next year) I'm going to hike Angels Landing and push myself really hard. Maybe sprint up and down Walters Wiggles a few times. I'll have a massive MI right at the top and have the coolest tombstone ever! I'll try to remember to wear muted colors (tan or black maybe) so as I decompose I won't intrude too much on everyone's outdoor experience.
