TAMPA - FOX 13 has confirmed that New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner has died. He was 80.
Steinbrenner died of a blood clot, sources tell FOX 13, not a heart attack as earlier reports said.
Reports say Steinbrenner was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital. The New York Yankees have not yet issued a statement.
As the tough owner of the New York Yankees with a legendary temper, Tampa was Steinbrenner's home. He raised millions of dollars for charities here, including for the Boys & Girls Clubs, and held a special Christmas concert for children every year.
Steinbrenner turned 80 on July 4 and has reportedly been in poor health for a couple of years.
