http://wwww.zionnational-park.com old look

I am giving my website a face lift.

Please critique. I want to catch all the problems before I make it live. I started working on this a couple of years ago, then dropped it. I have time to work on it again right now.

The old link doesn't work for me.

I really like how you provide directions for the East Entrance, but perhaps change the title to "Directions to East Entrance of Zion National Park" since there are several entrances.

The photo caption on the front page says it's Angels Landing, but I'm seeing Orderville Canyon in the photo.

Links all seem to work. A slightly darker font might be nice.

Website looks great.:2thumbs:

The older I get, the darker and bigger I do like the font! I agree. As I said, I was 2 years younger when I did it. lol

Thanks for the input and ideas!

I like the very readable color choice with the white background and black/green text. I think the old yellow/orange background creates more strain on my eyes. The font for the buttons and Zion NP title on the left is pleasant, but perhaps a bit feminine. Not necessarily bad, just sayin' :haha:

I find the buttons (Zion, Hotels, Camp, Hike, etc.) a little confusing as compared to the words below which are also links (Zion NP, Lodging, Camp, Hike, etc.).

All in all keep it going. It's a great site you have!

So is the new one going to be a front-end for your other pages? Or do you plan on adapting your new theme for your old pages?

Very nice web page. Where I expected to find flaws, I could find none. It is actually one of the best web pages I have ever seen when it comes to organization of information and completeness. Kudos Tanya.

Wow! That makes me feel great and energized to work on it. I am an organization freak! While I love to give out free Zion info, the main focus still must be on renting my hotel rooms - but in a back door sort of way. I like to be more subtle and hate commercial sites. I hope my site reflects that.

Yes, every page on the site will look similar. I did the lodging pages a couple of years ago, then got busy doing other things and have not been on the internet much.

I think for a front page, it is too busy; too much text and too many links. It makes it a challenge to find my way. I would cite http://www.apple.com/ as an example of an uncluttered front page.

That is all done for google. Sad as it is, that part must stay. Every word, every link I wrote on that first page is for google. I worked hard getting all that to fit. lol

OK I understand why. What about two homepages? This one to catch the search engine ranking and a less cluttered condensed version home page for when the visitor clicks to go to your home page with the option to expand out to the other?

Summary of everyone from everywhere I posted.....
1. Too busy: excess text, pictures too small or not enough of them, no basic Zion introduction (like starting in Chapter 8 assuming everyone knows Zion). Suggest limiting text, tabs and links. Too many links or/and links and some buttons identical.
2. Lacking the fun element - its boring. Hmmm.. .what to do here!?!?! Help!
3. Increase contrast: text size, darker color, say the men, keep it the same say the females. Define the east side entrance as just one entrance.
4. Loose the slimy snail (even though its the infamous Zion snail)
5. The logo is lost - make is stand out say all the men and one female. Other females like it.
Would love suggestions on how to make it fun. Will work on the rest while balancing keeping it ranked.

Question since this is the purpose, does it draw the eye and traffic enough to your lodging.

tanya
07-08-2010, 09:11 PM
Very Observant.....

But!

Those pesky search engine gods must be appeased if I want to be found in more places than lodging, and its is a huge and helpful site that covers just about everything on Zion, so .... although I have to rent hotel rooms for a living, its all the other stuff that I, google and you love and when the Tbird is sold, the lodging will be removed and just the other stuff will remain. :)

I would perfer to not have anything commercial at all on it, so the little that is there I TRY and keep subtle.

So ... balance.... is everything. I hope I have it.

I made some changes and still working on it.

Okay, here is a search engine question I have wanted to ask for years: will search engines find text that is the same color as the background? See where I'm going with this? Hidden from human view, but still appeasing SEO?

I find the site a bit tricky to navigate. You've got some great photos and good hike descriptions, but they're hard to find.

tanya
07-12-2010, 05:09 PM
How so? I have heard that before? Are you looking at the site as if you were a tourist that has never visited Zion? What can I do to fix it?

There is a link on top for hiking. Keep in mind that the average person going to visit Zion NP is not going for hiking or canyoneering. They want to know general info about the park. Next they want to know where to stay, then a few might want to know some hikes and see some photos. Almost none care about canyoneering. There are links on top that do take them to all the hiking in Zion, links on the side that let them know about nearby parks like Bryce. A lot of my target audience will visit Zion, Bryce and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in a 3 day trip.

Good question. It's a lot easier for someone to tell you they don't like something than it is for them to say why they don't like it. Your question definitely got me thinking. It's also a lot harder to fix something.

The new layout with the main page and a small sidebar looks great. The old layout with 3 columns is busy and tough to read. I find my eyes bouncing all over the page instead of establishing a flow.

Navigating the site, I can see a few more links as being helpful. For example, you mention in your hiking Zion section the Kolob Area of the park. A link there to a list of your Kolob Trails would certainly help. Add other internal links as necessary.

Also, better maps of the park would help. The regional one is fine, but if I'm coming to Zion for the first time, I'd want a better look at the roads and trails within Zion.

hi tanya,

i think the site overall looks great. it will be neat to see the whole site change

some comments which you can take or throw out the window:

if i were to change any colors it would be the background of the filled in boxes on the right column. sort of a dark yellow green on my monitor, might appear differently to you or others. it might look nice as the same color you use for the logo/back/next. or perhaps a different green. but if you like it, forget i said anything.

however, the one thing i would like to suggest is that the horizontal bar of links at the very top of the page should be improved. i think this is a very important part of your webpage. how to improve it? my mind has been elsewhere so i've not had time to really think about it. but i think there are two simple ways it could be improved:

i think most importantly there should be more spacing between the links. they look a bit cramped and blended together, and i think they should pop out more (could be bigger too, but i can appreciate wanting to keep them small). i realize this presents a problem with your logo and spacing. there would be a number of ways to deal with that. a funky and perhaps 'fun' way would be to push the logo to the left so that the dark part with only the word 'zion' hangs off into the white space to the left. this might make it stand out more in a fun way, but it also creates an asymmetry which would bug some people. you could instead move it up more to make room. or various other things ...

less importantly, i think you perhaps could reorder the links. this could be done in a number of ways. if i were to reorder it might consider the following order:

Zion National Park (http://www.zionnational-park.com/) Weather (http://www.zionnational-park.com/zion-national-park-weather.htm) Vacation (http://www.zionnational-park.com/zion-national-park-vacation.htm)Lodging (http://www.zionnational-park.com/zion-national-park-lodging.htm) Camping (http://www.zionnational-park.com/zion-national-park-campground.htm) Hike (http://www.zionnational-park.com/hiking-zion-national-park.htm) Backpack (http://www.zionnational-park.com/backpacking-zion-national-park.htm) Photos (http://www.zionnational-park.com/zion-national-park-pictures.htm)

Zion National Park (http://www.zionnational-park.com/) Lodging (http://www.zionnational-park.com/zion-national-park-lodging.htm)Weather (http://www.zionnational-park.com/zion-national-park-weather.htm) Vacation (http://www.zionnational-park.com/zion-national-park-vacation.htm) Camping (http://www.zionnational-park.com/zion-national-park-campground.htm) Hike (http://www.zionnational-park.com/hiking-zion-national-park.htm) Backpack (http://www.zionnational-park.com/backpacking-zion-national-park.htm) Photos (http://www.zionnational-park.com/zion-national-park-pictures.htm)

Zion National Park (http://www.zionnational-park.com/) Lodging (http://www.zionnational-park.com/zion-national-park-lodging.htm) Vacation (http://www.zionnational-park.com/zion-national-park-vacation.htm)Weather (http://www.zionnational-park.com/zion-national-park-weather.htm) Camping (http://www.zionnational-park.com/zion-national-park-campground.htm) Hike (http://www.zionnational-park.com/hiking-zion-national-park.htm) Backpack (http://www.zionnational-park.com/backpacking-zion-national-park.htm) Photos (http://www.zionnational-park.com/zion-national-park-pictures.htm)

i suppose what i am getting at is that, personally, i want camping, hiking, backpacking and photos together on the right and zion, lodging, weather and vacation on the left. others i imagine might like a different preference.

also you've dropped slot canyons from that menu bar. i would like to find it up there. it also seems out of place on the side bar where it's associated with a list of links of ' specific locations'

another comment ... in the section below the map, it says 'directions to zion national park' ... here i think you could distinguish headings either with bolder text, different color, underlining (though i realize you use this to denote links), etc. specifically 'direction to zion nat'l park' 'from arizona' 'from las vegas' etc.

oh .. another thing, that tree image in the bottom right ... it's really fuzzy! it needs to be sharper. here's a sharper version

hope a tiny fraction of this is helpful.

Wow! Thanks Stefan.... Great comments! I am glad you got to them today. I was about to call it done. Now I have a few more things to tinker with first! The color on that box is the mustard/forest service greenish yellow on my lap top, and park service/forest green on my PC which is what I meant it to be. I wonder why the variations? Also on my pc the color behind the photos is grey and so are the bold lines at the top and bottom of the page but they are suppose to be forest green?

different monitors display colors differently. your forest green can become the mustard yellow if there is more red. so i suppose if your laptop display produced a stronger red, then it would amplify it well beyond the amount you actually wanted and turn the forest green into the mustard green. alternatively, if your PC diminishes the red, then it would look forest green there but other displays would show the mustard green.

the background color you are using is #5A580C

try #26580C or #214C0A or #1D4209 instead

Also on my pc the color behind the photos is grey and so are the bold lines at the top and bottom of the page but they are suppose to be forest green?

do they look different or the same on both of your computers? these are all images and the color is definitely not a forest green. i would say each image file needs to be edited with the color changed.

Thanks for all the suggestions Stefan! I am working on them.

This color variation is throwing me? I see green - BFC4A6 is what I am using, so the border behind the 3 photos on top, the top side background on the menu and the pictures that are the top and bottom line all match. On my PC I see green.

Thanks for all the suggestions Stefan! I am working on them.

This color variation is throwing me?

I see green - BFC4A6 is what I am using ...

okay, first let me clarify one thing. when i was referring to the color #5A580C this was for the background of the boxes containing the text "Best Western East Zion Lodge" "Reservations 1.888...." "Mileage from Mt. Carmel Jct." in the right side bar. so the changes i was suggesting was for those only. i just want to make sure if that part makes sense. basically the new suggestions would reduce the amount of red that is in the color. this would make it more universally green across other computers (if there were any justice in the world).

I see green - BFC4A6 is what I am using, so the border behind the 3 photos on top, the top side background on the menu and the pictures that are the top and bottom line all match.

this color is not a green color. it's a lightish, grayish, greenish, tanish. the RGB values are very close to each other which makes it grayer.

I see green - BFC4A6 is what I am using,
On my PC I see green.

http://www.zion-national-park.org/images/topzion.gif

all of my displays see it more grayish/tanish greenish which sounds closer to your laptop. it may be that your PC monitor needs to be calibrated. but if that is the monitor that is off, and you're using it to decide on the color, then what you're seeing there could be different from what most people are seeing on their computers.

so i would recommend trying to make those image files (2 borders, map, 3 images) all on your laptop and make them the green that you want. the color on the laptop may be more accurate and may be the most immediate way to ensure you're getting the color you want, until you get the display/color issue sorted out.

if you do make the images with the laptop, i'd recommend using two different images, in two different places on the webpage, one made on the laptop, and one made on the PC. then go around and look at the webpage on various other computers of people that you know and see which image produces the color that you really want. this would at least tell you which computer is more like the others and which monitor might need to be calibrated.

Dang it!!!! Made it all darker green and its all just grey on the lap top. (probably actual color)

At least the mustard green is gone - now just dark grey. Tried auto fix on my monitor and nothing.
Will plug in some of the colors you gave me again and see what I get on the lap top.

Thanks for your help! That would have been frustrating to think I had this all done and its just all grey. :eek2::eek2:

Now my lap top and PC look similar --- sort of.....

okay ... here's what i see:

1 -- the 3 photos in the upper right of the page ... the first two have only a thin black-looking border, the third has dark green border along the bottom-right side of the photo (and definitely green on this one)

2 -- the map now has only a black-looking extension of the border on the bottom right ... no longer has color (tanish/gray, forest green, or otherwise)

3-- the background color on the right-hand side bar (Best Western, Reservations, etc.) is now given by the color #333300 (from the .css file)

this is a very dark color with equal amounts of red (33) and green (33). i wanna make sure this is what you want. you could make it greener by increasing the green (#334400) or by decreasing the red (#223300) (also see comment 5)

4 -- the top and bottom borders are now a very dark color (which photoshop samples at #383C27 with just a little more green (3C) than red (38)). this color appears very dark green to me.

5 -- Do you want both the borders (top/bottom) as well as the background of the boxes (Best Western, Reservations) to be the same color?

It seems they're slightly different at the moment (#383C27 vs. #333300).

personally i like the greener borders (#383C27) than the backgrounds in the right-hand side bar (#333300). since the colors are so similar, making them the same might make it balanced.

6 -- just fyi i see a blank line below the 'Clarence E. Dutton' signature above the bottom border

As a person who is into maps, I can tell you that this...

http://www.zionnational-park.com/zion-national-park-road-map.htm

...isn't a "Zion National Park road map." That would be a close-up map of the park showing trail heads, parking, etc., which is what I would want and expect if I clicked on the link. This is a map of southwestern Utah. It might be better to call is the "Spectacular route 89 map."

tanya

Thanks Richard....

I do need to redo all the maps. These are the maps, but I don't have a better road map. I have tried to make them interactive so you click on them and it takes you to what you clicked on. I do need to work on them and organize them better and get a better road map. If i remember right, my thinking, for better or worse, was a more detailed map opened too slow for the average user, but put a link to more detailed maps on that map.

okay ... here's what i see:

1 -- the 3 photos in the upper right of the page ... the first two have only a thin black-looking border, the third has dark green border along the bottom-right side of the photo (and definitely green on this one)

Yep, you are right! It was suppose to be a layer of brown like the logo, then a layer of green to match the top and bottom line and other dark green areas.

2 -- the map now has only a black-looking extension of the border on the bottom right ... no longer has color (tanish/gray, forest green, or otherwise)

Will make it all the same.

3-- the background color on the right-hand side bar (Best Western, Reservations, etc.) is now given by the color #333300 (from the .css file)

Yes, all need to be the same.

this is a very dark color with equal amounts of red (33) and green (33). i wanna make sure this is what you want. you could make it greener by increasing the green (#334400) or by decreasing the red (#223300) (also see comment 5)

I see what you mean.

4 -- the top and bottom borders are now a very dark color (which photoshop samples at #383C27 with just a little more green (3C) than red (38)). this color appears very dark green to me.

Dark Green is good! Is it too dark? Don't know how to change a picture to an exact color, just how to "replace color" by changing the hue.

5 -- Do you want both the borders (top/bottom) as well as the background of the boxes (Best Western, Reservations) to be the same color?

YES!!!

It seems they're slightly different at the moment (#383C27 vs. #333300).

Yeah.. :cry1:

personally i like the greener borders (#383C27) than the backgrounds in the right-hand side bar (#333300). since the colors are so similar, making them the same might make it balanced.

#38C27? - I see as a dark grey
#334400 - I see as a dark grassy green
#223300 - I see as a dark green

I like both #334400 and #223300. Will put them both us and look at my PC and Lap Top and see what looks better with the brown logo.

6 -- just fyi i see a blank line below the 'Clarence E. Dutton' signature above the bottom border

:hail2thechief::hail2thechief: Okay. How does that all look?

Okay. How does that all look?

it looks great. the greens were very dark before, and i like them better now. you should feel free to vary the amount of green (or red or blue) as you like. you could try higher numbers like #335500 or any numbers in between or beyond to get the color more to your liking. i just chose a couple different ones as examples. everyone will see the color slightly differently of course.

the borders on the map and the narrows photo look great. the 3 photos at the top do not have borders on the upper left corner. it looks good as is, but i just want to make sure what i am seeing is what it's supposed to be. you could add a thin black border if you like. i think it would look good either way.

the color of the top and bottom border look nice and go well with the rest of the page. but at the corners there is a grayish part which might be there from your changing the color. you could re-edit these files and make that stuff white so it's unnoticeable. i've attached a snapshot to show what i mean.

i like the horizontal border of links at the top. makes it easy to locate and access all the great stuff on the site.

I like the colors is they are looking good to you. That black I use to have was suppose to be green. lol

I will work on those corners and thin dark borders. You have a great eye for detail! :hail2thechief::hail2thechief::hail2thechief::hail 2thechief::hail2thechief::hail2thechief::hail2thec hief::hail2thechief::hail2thechief:

they are looking good to me. i like them :2thumbs:

and thin dark borders.

if you're talking about a thin border on each of the 3 photos at the top ... i was thinking the easiest thing to do would be to just add a border (in HTML) to the images rather than changing the photo itself. i think a 1 (maybe 2) pixel border would be nice, but as i said, i also like it as is ... it should look the way you want it

thank you!!!

sure, happy to help

Those should look better now?

the top and bottom dark green borders look superb!

what do you think about the 3 photos? do you like them better with or without the border? i'm looking at a before and after.

stefan

one last comment on those 3 photos. they could be made a little sharper/crisper than you have them. (i'm attaching an example.) they are pretty prominently placed so they will get looked at quite a lot

Are you just hitting sharpen on photoshop or is there some trick?

I like both. How do you like them? With or without borders?

when resizing the image there is an option to use the 'bicubic sharpening' during the resizing which is recommended for reductions. that's all that i used on that image.

i like them both ways and am having a hard time deciding which i like better. i've always liked that shot of bo and angels landing.

Played with the pictures some, but have 2 problems. I have a very old version of PS... 6.0 Dont laugh. :lol8: And while there is a way un unmask/sharpen and all that, it just made it ugly because I had used sharpen before on the photos on the web. I am going to do it when I can get to my originals, on my E drive, which won't cooperate at them moment. Maybe even get a newer version of PS.

I do like how the mystery/narrows photo is. It looks lifted off the page. Would the 3 littles ones and the map look good like that? over even like the lodging one?

when it comes to the 3-D effect, shadows, etc. i am not sure what the general public's preference is. if you were to do something like that for the 3 small images, i would think the simplicity of just a shadow like in the lodging image would work better (it's already sorta like that as it is currently). i think the map could go either way, looks really good in 2D with the dark green border, but it could work in 3D too.

alright, it sounds like you want one more thing to fix

in the image i've uploaded, there are 3 places were the text is touching the border and could use some padding on the left. since you're doing a template this could affect many different pages. (note, the fonts will look different on windows)

Changed some stuff. How does the lodging box look?

stefan
07-22-2010, 05:15 PM
it stands out more now. it would look nice to center it in the space between the photo and the left border of the page? either by shifting it, or extending the border of the green box further on the right side so there's the same whitespace on either side.

tanya

The map issue. How about pictures with alt tags.
One for shuttle/tunnel info (since I deleted that link to make space for the picture)
Topo Map Link
Road Map Link
The cartoon trail map (need a name for it?)

You can PM me if you dont want to post here.

Thanks!

Alt Tags! Can anyone see them? I just updated my web writing program because the old one was really old and had an alt tag error. The new one does not, but I still cant see the alt tags online! I just switched to firefox. Is that the problem? Can anyone see the alt tags.

The text you see when you hover over a link or image with your mouse. Make sure you hit refresh. There are lots of changes.

I'm not seeing the alt tags

Udink

I am seeing the text when hovering over links, but not over the images. Firefox uses the "title" tag instead of "alt" to display text in a tooltip when you hover over images.

tanya

Thanks! That helps a lot! My lap top crashed and I switched to Firefox on my PC, so all I am seeing is Firefox.

Udink - "Firefox uses the "title" tag instead of "alt" to display text in a tooltip when you hover over images."

Back to working on the website... How do I get the title of an image to show up in Firefox? I am using DW and put the "alt tag" on the photos, in the usual way. I am using firefox, so I don't see the tags.

Beech.. are you using firefox? Is that the only browser I am having problems with?

accadacca
08-10-2010, 03:08 PM
Pretty simple. You need an alt and title tag for each image. Dreamweaver doesn't write title tags through the interface. You'll have to add the "title=" attribute to each image reference in code view. Yep, labor intensive, but its for google. :ne_nau:

Full explanation here with code examples: http://www.netmechanic.com/news/vol6/html_no1.htm

tanya

Thanks Scott. Have an ext to do the title attributes, but doing both is causing such a mess of errors. I am using a newer version of DW, 8, as apposed to 2004 mx, maybe that is my problem? I just want to make sure what I see in firefox works in other browsers. My lap top is in the shop. It died, so dont see netscape. I could load it on my pc though.

Looking at it closer, its pictures without links and links on the maps that I can't get to work. I am clueless!
