An email I received this past week:

A guy about my age comes in to the PO for a passport and while will going through the forms he tells me that his son is in the service.I'm thinking Irag or Afganistan. We get a lot of people sending off packages. So he says I get this phone call about 10 PM.Somebody military says your son is in the hospital on life support you've got to come now! Now this guy I'm doing the passport for is just some poor shlub like me living out in the woods. He said he. started screaming WHHHAT! How the hell am I gonna get there .He doesn't have a passport so he stars making calls -politicians -the red cross-anybody who will listen .Finally he remembers that his brother is traveling in the area where his son is.He contacts him and the brother agrees to go see the son.The father gets a call from the brother next day who says your son's alright He was out out with his buddies and had to much to drink. They think he died (stopped breathing) 3X while they were taking him to the hospital. So the guy says now I'm getting my passport . I'm gonna be ready.Happy Fathers'Day

The army is dumb about that stuff. They call with no details. When I was injured in Iraq I called my (then) wife within a couple hours to tell her what happened and that I was ok (I didn't want her to hear an exaggerated version of the story through the grape vine). So, about six weeks later she got a call from the Army saying that I was injured in a roadside bomb attack and was in the hospital and they had no further details. Naturally she thought it was a new injury from a subsequent bombing. She called and emailed everyone she knew to call or email looking for details but because of the time difference she waited about 12 hours to find out from me that the Army is dumb and was calling six weeks late with no details. :nono:
