MOAB, Utah (AP) -- Authorities say a 47-year-old Utah man drowned during a weekend rafting trip on the Colorado River near Moab.
The Grand County Sheriff's Office says Lawrence Evaro of Clearfield fell out of the rubber raft Saturday before entering White Rapids near Red Cliffs Lodge.
Heavy swirling currents kept him under water through the rapids before a boat guide and others pulled Evaro from the water and performed CPR.
He was pronounced dead at Allen Memorial Hospital in Moab.
The sheriff's office says Evaro was wearing a life jacket at the time of the accident.

Back in 2006, I almost lost two friends in the White Rapid. One was sucked under for about 10 seconds and another kept bobbing up and down in the current. Had to chase him in an inflatable kayak and rescue his ass. Luckily, the first guy got sucked under the eddy lines and surfaced in the big eddy on the river right, he was able to crawl onto the shore where I picked him up after. He was in shock and hyperthermic.

White rapid has been known to take lives before and cause havoc on unsuspecting folks. It's the biggest rapid on the daily and hides behind a turn. The current pushes you into it and you don't see it until you are sitting on top of it at high flow. At high water it can be a class 3 rapid.
