Name some places that have knowledgeable staff who haven't moved over from the shoe department etc, who can help fit a person with the right bow/draw/arrow length and spline etc.

Fourty is right on. I was gonna recommend them. I brought in a no-name fiberglass recurve and had a custom string made for it. They recognized it better than I did and told me all about the little treasure I didn't know I had.
