I thought this was relevant since Bogley uses this function. Interesting read.

"If you put a Like button on your site, you're potentially selling out your users' privacy even if they never press that button," says Nicole Ozer (http://www.aclunc.org/issues/technology/blog/index.shtml), an attorney with the ACLU of Northern California. "It's another example of why user control needs to be the default in Facebook."
In the last few months, scrutiny of the privacy practices of the Internet's second most popular Web site has reached an all-time high, with politicians threatening probes (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13578_3-20006443-38.html) and privacy activists calling for formal investigations (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13578_3-20006220-38.html). In response to the outcry, Zuckerberg convened a press conference (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13578_3-20005976-38.html) last week at Facebook's Palo Alto, Calif., headquarters, where he pledged to make privacy "simpler."
For its part, Facebook told CNET on Tuesday that the information about who viewed what pages with a Like button is anonymized after three months and is not shared with or sold to third parties. A representative acknowledged, however, that the current privacy description (http://www.facebook.com/help/?faq=17512) of Facebook's social plug-ins "is not as clear as it could be, and we'll fix that." Facebook also said it will update its privacy policy "to more clearly explain the information we receive."
Facebook's FAQ (http://www.facebook.com/help/?faq=17097) says: "No data is shared about you when you see a social plug-in on an external website." No mention of this data-sharing appears under the "Information from other websites" section of the company's general privacy policy (http://www.facebook.com/policy.php).

Nice post.

If it was up to me that facebook like button would be removed from every post. When I am in the office our proxy blocks facebook so it makes that area of a post look pretty stupid.
If I want something on facebook I could always just copy and paste a link.

And I have bitched about it to upper management before with no results.... sometimes I think upper management gets a little to carried away with whistles and bells and forgets Bogley's core group contains exactly zero giggling 13 year old girls....

exactly zero giggling 13 year old girls....

Odd how all those friends more than 5-10 years younger than I tend to be facebook addicts.

And all the friends that are my age or 5 or more years older are mostly absent.

I use facebook a little, rarely click on like, rarely comment, post very little.

On the other hand, I get a kick out of reading what get published via my friends' accounts.

Agreed. The site is very slow for me while it loads all it's access to Flickr, Facebook, ads, etc.

wonder if we should put up a poll somewhere to see what the community wants and hopefully get it removed :)

You old guys give it up! I have tried to talk to :afro: in the past, but he is young and believes in progression. He is probably correct too. We old timers don't like change, but he (and I assume Accaa:ride:) keep up with the times and the times are not the over 40 crowd.

I know Summit isn't an old timer...and neither am I and I certainly don't like it on here. It's not a matter of progression so much as clutter IMO.

Old guys!?! Over 40!??! My job is technology, and I think its a bit overdone on this site. You said "We old timers". No way you're over 40.

not old!!!

but being progressive just for the sake of progression when it has no impact on the quality of the item in question is rather lame :bandit:

Could we dampen the torches and lower the pitchforks for a bit? Hear me out please. I'm doing better at not getting involved with arguments, accadacca is always better, but I'll just say this one thing, and I hope you can understand our point of view;

Sure, the Like button isn't needed on EVERY thread. Ideally, just the Trip Reports. We're working on that. Could you please bear with us on experimenting with this after only a few weeks?

I'd argue that the Justin Bieber fans aren't the ones Liking the Trip Reports, so let's just go ahead and lay that theory to rest.

The Like button on the Trip Reports is working.

Our goal is to promote bogley for users with relative interests. No explanation needed, but a friend of a friend sees the xxxxxx Likes Calf Creek Falls, if they have an interest in it, they're likely to check it out, and who knows, maybe even contribute.

And since every single person who has posted in this thread has an active Facebook account, well... the fear of "texting facebook ADHD teens taking over bogley" loses it's validity.

Without going into a whole debate... we definitely understand that the Like button just isn't relevant on every thread such as questions and general discussions, and like I said, we're working on that. (We're even close to a better solution). So as we're doing some "field research" on where it works and where it sucks for a few weeks, please bear with us.

So I hope I'm expressing our side of the story with "minimal confrontation", but please understand we will not remove something that is bringing in a lot of traffic to bogley. But we definitely want to make our members happy, and we're close to a solution after seeing the results.

That's all I have to say at this time. Thanks for listening.

Maybe it could at least be moved to the bottom? ... that would make me happy.

I just hate how facebook is taking over the world these days especially with all the ongoing privacy issues. I see the "like" button everywhere I go online these days. I do have a facebook account and must admit I check it rather frequently ... But I guess I am getting old and grumpy when it comes to keeping my internet friends segregated.
