My brother game me his old MSR Marathon 205 Ceramic Water Filter. It's old (probably like 8 years) and I can't find a replacement cartridge for it. I cleaned it up, rinsed it all down, and ran a bunch of water through it. It all seems to be in working order.

So what do you think my chances are? Should I just go buy a new one or stick with this guy?

Thanks in advance.

it should work. they last quite a while. green scotch brite pads are what i used to use to clean it up in the field. but if you can swing it the new ones are probably better.

Well thats good news. I just read somewhere that you can boil the filters, should I do that too just in case there might be little microbes living it the filter still?

never heard that myself. but i guess it couldn't hurt. worst thing that could happen is the thing deforms due to the heat or just falls apart. then you would have the decision made for you, as to whether or not, to buy a new filter.

Rumor has it the MSR Marathon EX Ceramic Element will work. Its a little newer, may find one of those.

I just ended up buying a new one at REI. They had a sale on the miniworks so I picked it up last weekend. I did a little backpacking up above silver lake flat and the new filter worked great.

Thanks for you help.
