View Full Version : Anybody build their own boat?

I checked out 2 books from the library today that really have me wanting to make my own canoe.
Canoecraft: An illustrated guide to fine woodstrip construction
Canoe Paddles a complete guide to making your own

I really really want to make my own canoe now. It would be a lot of work, but it looks pretty awesome, and the sense of accomplishment when it's over would be amazing.

Anybody have experience building their own canoe or kayak?

I thought about it a few years ago but that's as far as it got.
Check out this site - the forum and the build info. They're English but there's a lot of great experience there.

on the in-law side a grandfather and uncle have built many of their own

I have a copy of " Building A strip Canoe " by Gil Gilpatric. I know I will build it some day I just dont know when. If you want some help putting the plans togeather let me know.

I made a canoe in 2000 with a buddy of mine. We cloned another canoe and it was sweet. I went to do it again in 2004 and the price of Kevlar had shot up because of the wars and it was then too costly for me.

Looks like the thread died but here's a canoe I built - 4 days down the Green, loaded with everybody's gear to race down to the takeout at Mineral Bottom. I've started a sailing whitewater canoe. Been doing this since living in Minnesota. Be creative & go for it.

That sounds like a sweet trip. Any up close pics of the canoe?

After arriving back to the US from his and moms 7 year stint sailing around the world, Dad created a form and built 7 Cedar Strip Canoes. Approximately 250 man-hours per canoe. When Dad passed away several years ago, mom gave me their personal canoe. I helped very little as I lived 16 hours away, but did get to see some of the process. It is quite labor intensive, but as someone else put it "the satisfaction of completion" is truly the reward. I'll try to take some pictures and post them. My canoe is truly a work of art.
