View Full Version : SLC source for foam for car camping pad?
Growing up my parents had some sheets of 3 inch thick foam(similar to the foam used in camp trailer cushions) that we would roll up and take camping to sleep on. Anyone know where I can buy some locally(my parents said they originally bought it from Smith & Edwards, but I'm not sure I want to drive all the way up there)? I'm heading to Moab this weekend with my pregnant wife and she needs something a little more forgiving to sleep on.
Thanks!

If you can't find any foam, I'd suggest a floating mattress meant for the swimming pool - the correct term escapes me right now, but the blow up single air mattresses/pads usually for swimming. I've used one for years. They're easier to pack, easy to adjust the softness, and they include the pillow. :cool2:

Jo-Ann Fabric carries sheets of foam like that. They have different thicknesses and densities, so you should be able to find what you need. It is a bit pricey, though. I built a window seat in my dining room and got the foam for the cushions from Jo-Ann.

REI sells their own brand of ThermaRest. Their thickest ones are crazy thick and comfortable.

Here is my car camping combo... almost better than the bed at home. Coleman air bed plus foam pad on top for softness. The air bed, like Somebeech said, can be adjusted for firmness but the foam on top gives the plush comfort. These old bones of mine love the plush. I use two pads in the winter for insulation purposes. Last foam pads I bought were at Sportsman's Warehouse. Cabela's has a bucket load of thermarest type pads, some cheap some not. You may want to check some of the Army/Navy type stores. I have seen them there too.
Army Navy surplus on redwood road has the 3 inch thick pads.. I would say skip that and check out Recreation outlet (salt lake or AF) they have some nice thermarest style pads..
This is where I got mine, they cut it to your size

Thanks for all the ideas and the quick responses! Looks like that thick foam is more expensive than I was expecting and those thermarest pads are kind of pricey as well. The coleman air beds are pretty cheap and I already have a pump so I may pick one of those up to get us through the weekend.

I often sleep in the back of my xterra. I first use the thick "rugg stopper" padding you can buy of any floor rug internet site. This keep your sleeping bag and or thurmarest pad from sliding around and provides some insolation. Then I use my thurmarest pad. My sleepign bag actualy has a bottom pouch to slide the thinsolate pad into. This should leave you allot more room to pack other gear in your car that a three inch foam pad would take up.

I've got 4 of them (might be thicker than 3" though) and would be willing to sell them. PM me if interested.
I just have to say that reading this topic by itself makes my head hurt. Just trying to understand what it means....argh!
It's like saying "Utah source for Canyon for person hiking enjoyment." argghhh....

open cell foam from a fabric store is the way to go. it won't pop, it's super comfortable, and it lasts forever. i would NEVER consider an inflatable... recipe for disaster.
i used to have a bed in the back of my xterra. cushy foam was the way to go!
