View Full Version : Canyoneering Spam???

Yesterday, Spidey posted an invite to a free canyoneering clinic. So I was curious as to how many went to a free canyoneering class last night in Orem (about 20 actually). I was going to post a question as to the success and response to the class and what was discussed. But alas..... the thread was deleted. In speaking with Spidey this morning, the invite to the free class was apparently considered Spam by our beloved Ice. Spam??? Really Ice?
So what is spam on a canyoneering forum? I see posts about sales at REI (which I consider an overpriced yuppy store). We have a couple of vendors of all things canyoneering posting re: gear or new gear or new stores all the time. What about the announcements for canyoneering books? I personally see nothing wrong in any of that. Spidey is a member of the forum, he lurks often and participates occasionally in this section and in the political section. So, the inconsistency is painfully obvious and smacks of being only personal and ego driven.
Personally, I do not consider an invite for free training spam. I actually want to know about this stuff. I really don't care who is putting it on. Practice is good, free is good. What part of free training or free practice session is spam? I bluntly ask, how is that worse than the announcement of Bo's new store, Tom's new gear announcements, the Arizona canyoneering book announcements, an invite to participate in the ACA training, REI rebates, etc., etc.???? Really Ice, I am a bit disgusted with this one. I have had some posts deleted, but whatever. But to delete something that is not only free but valuable to the general canyoneering population is unacceptable. Training, paid or free is a GOOD thing. I don't consider announcements of canyoneering specific training spam. I know you have a gripe with Rich and the ACA and others closely associated. Most of us don't. Now that I have more than a decade of canyoneering under my belt, I still want to know about training, information and gear. This, I thought, was why the forum existed. This is why I am here on this forum. :ne_nau: :frustrated: Please correct me if I am wrong. I am willing to listen to the explainations of the inconsistency. Other opinions as to what is acceptable are also welcome. Helmet on --Flame on.

I agree with what you've said Scott. I have no idea that anything was deleted, and if so who was involved in the deletion, but if it was deleted as spam, then my announcement of the upcoming bouldering comp. and store party in the climbing forum should also be deleted. I apologize if I seemed presumptious about freedom of announcing upcoming events, trainings and parties. I assumed that this is what the forum was partly about? I did join Bogley with my donation a few months back and believe in what this website is about and represents.

Hmmm, interesting. Ice? Somebody?
I certainly see no reason that mention of this free workshop should be deleted as spam. Both commercial and non-commercial enterprises are mentioned here, and (in my opinion) are welcome when they are on topic, and when the posters are active, involved members of either the Bogley community or the activity's community. Spidey posts occasionally, and is a valued member (to say the least) of the canyoneering community. Where's the problem?

With regards to spam.... Those who provide value and participate in Bogley on a regular bases are allowed to promote outside interests, provided they keep it within reason. This has always been our policy.
Bogley is hit by literally hundreds of people attempting to spam the forum each day. Our software keeps most of the spam out, and our forum moderates do the rest of the house cleaning. The final call on what is deleted as spam is up to the forum moderators.
So.... bottom line.... if you want to promote an outside interest that is related to Bogley that's cool..... just participate in the forums. Consider it free advertising for providing a value to our members.
If your only reason for posting on Bogley is to promote an outside interest or product than please contact Bogley about purchasing advertising space.
With regards to the specific post in question: The only time spidey posts in the canyon section is when he is promoting an outside interest. Spidey was asked to either participate in other Bogley canyon threads or stop promoting his outside interests (spamming) the forum. If Scott Card, Bo_Beck, Cirrus2000, or Felicia had of made the same post it would have remained, as you are all contributing members. Sometimes the line is fine between what is spam and what is not, and its the moderators call.
PS: We are always looking to add new moderators that are interested in making Bogley a better forum. Apply within....

I'm not buying it Ice. Spidey has posted in this section as well as the climbing section and political section as I remember. Yes, he doesn't have thousands of posts. He has a day job that is outside, away from a computer. He builds homes. He and his canyoneering abilities have been discussed many times in this section. He has even cooked for a bunch of you people. His post was canyoneering specific. It was free. I am calling BS. I didn't know there was a post threshold.
Bo, please keep posting invites, store announcements, etc. I have stopped by your store a half dozen times to meet you, the man, the legend and to personally thank you for being there in case I do something stupid in Zion. Tom, please keep us up to date as to gear, your site, etc. I hope Rich keeps us up to date as to the ACA offerings. This is a canyoneering section after all. My post was made not to discourage anyone but our moderator.
I think the sticking point in your statement is that it is fully arbitrary.. if that is how you want it so be it but otherwise how many posts exactly constitutes participation on the forums?..
Can I vote to let Spidey post free clinic info? I know I don't have alot of pull but I missed out on the info :cry1:
As a canyoneering noob who is also poor I need all the free training I can get.
Spidey has been really helpful when I have talked with him over at the Out N Back store in Orem. Mabey I should make a separate thread about how much I love Spidey and what he is doing over at Out N Back to grow their canyoneering selection.
I understand rules are rules but mabey an exception could be made for free clinics that help others like me out.
I see posts about sales at REI (which I consider an overpriced yuppy store).
ahem...
REI will accept returns for ANYTHING (except ropes) for any reason. So pretty much you purchase something and you can have it replaced repeatedly for life no questions asked. Buy boots .. wear them out ... get new ones.... Its that simple.

Seems to me that this isn't actually a rule - more of what you'd call a guideline. Yeah, arbitrary's the word, TooeleCherokee. And I'm calling bullshit.
There are spammers (remember that bike advertisement that showed up in like 10 different forum areas, or the Asian Escort Service posts?) and then there are valued members of a community offering a free service. Spidey doesn't post here much, maybe, but it's not like he's swooping in to plaster ads around, hoping to make a bunch of money or drive up his hit count so he can get more Google Ads revenue.
I first read the other generic "Spammers" post, most of which is included in your reply above, Ice, and had to wonder WTF you were talking about. Spidey's no spammer.
The guy shows up in a lot of trip reports, he's a busy, active member of the community, and he doesn't post here very often - but he does post. (We've debated in the political thread a little bit.)
It's your sandbox, and you can kick out the kids you don't want to play with, but that doesn't mean nobody's going to say anything.
So yeah, I'm calling bullshit. Nothing I can do about it, but I'm calling it as I see it.

Forum spam is the creating of messages that are advertisements.
We have three choices to deal with spam
1. Not allow it.
2. Allow it.
3. Allow human moderators to make the call.
Bogley, uses method #3. It is not prefect, sometimes human moderators make mistake. Moderators are required to make judgement calls. Moderator is a thankless job, but good moderators are the life blood of any successful forum and are highly valued at Bogley.
For what it's worth.... No message or Spam on Bogley is just deleted..... When an active Bogley member steps over the line or abuses their privileges they are contacted politely in a private message and the situation is explain to them. They are told what they did wrong and what they can do to correct the issue. In this particular case Spidey was sent such a private message.
If you have a better idea of how we should deal with forum spam we would love to hear it. Anything to make the forum better.

I think the method (human judgement call) is valid, but when the human errs in his judgement and is called on it (especially by multiple regular posters - some of whom happen to be Bogley Big-shots), he ought to re-post the message.
It's obvious to me that your deleting the message (or whoever deleted it) was a bad judgement call. I read that post, and it had nothing to do with spamming the board, was completely legitimate, and a no logical reason to delete it exists.
Along with reinstating the post, please try to make better judgement calls in the future.

I've reconsidered my approach since I made my last post. I was confrontational and belligerent (for me.) I apologize, though I'll leave it up in the interest of full disclosure.
What I would rather do, Ice (instead of spewing the word "bullshit" around, and accusing you of behaving like a schoolyard kid, and generally stamping my little feet) is encourage you to reconsider how posts are determined to be spam, and whether sometimes a little leeway should be afforded.
In this situation, considering that:
the poster is an occasional contributor to the forum,
his posts range from canyoneering to ice climbing to religio-political discussion,
he is well known in the canyoneering community,
the post in question was about a non-commercial event, and
the event could have been of benefit to many on the forum
I think that the forum would have been better served by permitting the post to have remained.
Wow, I feel like such an adult right now. It sure is far too easy to get pissy and petulant on the internetz.

Interesting thread. I was part of organizing this event, although Spidey did all the work, teaching, hosting, etc. Part of the attendees were a local scout troop planning to do some canyons in the summer, and a few ACA members. It was well announced on the ACA website, and I thought about posting an announcement here. I wonder if I have the post count to not be moderated? I dont post 'often', but I lurk constantly (I hate desk jobs...). I was hoping to get more of a turn out from the non boy scouts, and get to know some more of the Bogley canyoneering crowd, and find some more partners in Utah County...
Would my advertising of a free clinic be more valid if I put up a few details of my trip last weekend?

I saw Spidey's post - I had no objection to the post - it was a free event and a networking opportunity. I think that it should have remained.
That being said, Ice can, and did moderate. He explained his thought process. I can say that I have challenged him several times in the past about this exact issue and he has remained consistent in his overall view.
I realize that nothing is free. Pick your poison: post trip reports, share knowledge, be a Big Shot, buy advertisement. The rules seem reasonable overall.
FWIW, I hope that future events such as this one get posted.

Hey.... maybe it was a bad call on my part.... maybe not.... and it was not the one post. The problem I saw as a moderator was the general direction spidey was heading in.... he made several introductory posts in January to establish himself, but since that time he only posted on Bogley to promote his self interests, which is spam.... Spidey was sent a nice, polite, note asking him to please participate more or to stop spamming the forum.... I didn't see that as an unreasonable request....
And yes.... Post counts matter.....
DWayne27 - you have enough posts that you can take your shoes off and help yourself to anything in the fridge....

The problem is it was spam.... you can put lip stick on a pig and put it in a fancy dress..... but it's still spam.....
Forum spam is the creating of messages that are advertisements.
So.... the real question is who is allowed to spam, how much are they allowed to spam, and who gets to make the call.... and I believe that has already be addressed....

So we have established the content of the post was not the problem. Therefore it can not be considered SPAM. You (Ice) Shane just didn't like who's mouth it came out of. That's not moderating SPAM for the good of the Forum. That's just Dislike, Ego or whatever was blowing your bloomers up that day. I don't know and I don't care.
Hey.... maybe it was a bad call on my part.... maybe not
Not maybe, was a bad call, everyone else can see that. Now it's just up to you to admit it.
The problem I saw as a moderator was the general direction spidey was heading in.... he made several introductory posts in January to establish himself
Establish myself? PLEASE! With Regard to this forum and this forum only. I have in fact been a member on this forum for something like 2 years. I had to re register last summer after I couldn't get my cookies to work after the forum was updated last year. Sorry, but not my fault. I have posted something like 20 times since last summer. Only 2 of those have been about clinics. HARDLY A TREND. One was a heads up about a Rich Carlson Totem workshop in January. Only the one Tuesday had anything to do with something I was teaching. Again HARDLY A TREND.
So.... bottom line.... if you want to promote an outside interest that is related to Bogley that's cool
So let me make sure I understand for the future. A FREE canyoneering skills clinic offered on and to a canyoneering forum, by one of it's members. This is an outside interest??? That is not related to the forum in question. (FREE CANYONEERING SKILLS CLINIC, CANYONEERING FORUM!!!????) Please esplain LUCY.
Sometimes the line is fine between what is spam and what is not
The line is FINE/THIN? As Henry Fonda would say. "Thin that's damn near invisible!"
In this particular case Spidey was sent such a private message.
I was sent such a message, and it was fairly polite. If you forgive the accusation of doing something wrong when no wrong was done. In Shane's PM he cited and I quote.
We have received several complaints that you are spamming Bogley.
To those of you that I have offended. (If there really are any.) If you were offended I do sincerely apologize to those that filed those SEVERAL COMPLAINTS. I meant no disrespect, I was not self advertising as Shane accuses me of later in the PM.
After reviewing your recent participation in Bogley it appears your main intent is to promote your canyon clinics. ONE AND IT WAS FREE. Pardon the HELL out of me Shane. On the one or two Saturdays a month that I do work at Out n Back, I have been asked by several people if I would do some kind of canyoneering workshop. These Several People really exist too. I thought I was doing something nice and considerate for the COMMUNITY. The only benefit I got was meeting some new very nice canyoneers. Shane you might not feel I gave up anything either. I consider time I could have been spending with my FAMILY as priceless.
SO DON"T CHEAPEN WHAT I DID LAST NIGHT BY CALLING IT SPAM.
And yes.... Post counts matter.....
God Forbid a newbie used his first post to announce a rendezvous they were hosting. No one would ever know about it.
By you rationale Shane, OH forgive me arbitrary dart throwing. If the likes of. I don't know Steve Allen, Michael Kelsey, or Rick Green posted an offer for a FREE canyoneering skills clinic, this would be considered Spam and Deleted. Don't bother answering that one we all know what the answer is. Even though I don't see a post count above ZERO for any of them. Hmmm That's a Mystery.
Bottom line Shane/Ice this whole episode just exposes you as a Jack Ass
Your just pissed everyone called you on it.
I'm sorry for the rant everyone. I will avoid posting about such things as free skills clinics. THANK YOU to all who have been on my side.
Again I apologize to anyone I have offended with my audacity.

Chevron-Chevron-Chevron
Now with Techron, get yours today at your friendly neighborhood Kaysville Chevron Station. We also have Chevron cars for gifts to those you love.
Non-Utah resident's, get free fill ups for life. Just mention the catch words--bogley,canyoneering and provide a valid drivers license, thats it.....
All Utah resident's get free hot dogs and beer with each and every fill up. Our friendly staff will wait on your every need, just sit in your car and honk out the star spangled banner and our staff will run out to accommodate your fuel and grocery needs.
For discount coupons and free fuel vouchers call
1-800-moabmark
Thats 1-800-moabmark for all your fuel and convenience store needs.
edit--can I spam for others? :haha:
That's the one I frequent the most - luckily for me, it has a 24-hr Mcdonalds attached to it too. So after a VERY long day, I pull up get my peanut butter twix bar, and get a few hamburgers. Very convenient. I'm like his #1 customer too and haven't received any vouchers yet...ha ha.
This has gotten way off track but I better set the record straight. OOOLLLDDDD no 7 has lead you slightly astray. Top Stop owns the one in Kaysville. I own a couple of locations over in Layton not Kaysville. Did try to buy Kaysville but McDonalds would not deal with me I was not a big enough fish. McDonalds owns the prop. and they lease to the conv store operator. McDonalds is not in the hamburger business they are really in the real estate business hamburgers are just a side note.
But since were spamming, quit getting peanut twix bars at Top Stop, head down to my west layton location and have a healthy Subway sandwich. :2thumbs: Subway franchises rule.
Back to the regular scheduled programming.
OOPS.........
Did I mention my passport is only good to I-70? Anything North of there is pure speculation by me.
I would never promote a CHEVRON STATION IN LAYTON.
Do you have the newest cars? Do you personally know Jerid from Subway?
How fresh is fresh? If we have to eat fresh. Is TECHRON really good or is maverik gas the same?
And this is all canyoneering related--who doesn't need a $5 FOOTLONG for a trip into canyon country after filling your car with CHEVRON with TECHRON, to avoid those untimely engine breakdowns in the Roost.

Ice
I am afraid I have to agree with everyone else. The line at the top of the page says Bogley Outdoor Community. When I see all the crap that is posted on Bogley Outdoor Community. Like the disgusting pictures in the rubbish bin and all the mindless bantering in the political section. Then you delete a valid Outdoor Community event. That

Question to Ice: If the announcement had been worded as an invitation ?
The problem is it was spam.... you can put lip stick on a pig and put it in a fancy dress..... but it's still spam.....
Forum spam is the creating of messages that are advertisements.
Thanks - I'm good with your position. :2thumbs:
Ice, after reading the last several posts, I need to state that I'm good in understanding your position, but I think you are wrong in this case.
OK - now I'm confused.......

2 posts out of 2 have been FOR PROFIT advertisements that were allowed to stay because (in Ice's words)
I agree.... I don't consider this spam since it's of value to anyone that spends time in the outdoors.
Spidey has 2 posts out of 21 that advertised a FREE clinic.
Logically irreconcilable.

IF only Bogley had an option to ignore a certain user... then Ice could just ignore Spidey and this whole thread could be recognized as the waste of time that it is.
If only...
