Iceaxe

So I'm looking at the Zion Backcountry Permit page today and notice Echo Canyon is closed, presumably for the snow that creates problems for the unprepared.... and has resulted in a couple of recent rescues. And I notice the Zion Narrows are closed, presumably for eventual high water.

Anyhoo.... this is just proof that those managing our backcountry experience are clueless.... because a number of canyons that are more dangerous are open and permits are available.... I'd laugh and point out the foolishness of this to The Park but you know that would just cause more closures.
And since when is it the parks job to protect us from ourselves? The original intent of the permit system was so the rangers could make contact with canyoneers and issue warnings like "Echo is filled with snow and in icy conditions, ice axes and crampons are required".... if you are going to have a permit system why not use it as it was originally intended?
What a freakin' joke.... and people ask why I don't visit Zion much anymore... it's because I hate dealing with clueless idiots....
:asshat:
