We got lucky. The plan was to do some canyoneering and hiking in the southern part of Grand Staircase, Marble Canyon and Vermillion Cliffs area over the weekend of February 27, 2010. We went with several options due to changing weather patterns and got away with a hoodoo hike, a Marble Canyon canyoneering loop hike and a Zion park hike in spite of the weather and the considerable amount of snow and mud in a lot of places. The Marbles were dry enough, snow free and the temperature was just right. These Marble canyons are like some of the others in the area

Awesome pics and TR.
How long of a drive was it? (I guess that depends on where you are coming from). Maybe that would be a better choice for spring break canyons in mid march rather than forcing some canyons close by that might by cold and wet. 4wd necessary?

From SLC it is about 6 - 7 hours. There are enough canyons in Marble to keep you busy for several days and some of them you can get into without driving down a muddy road. For us it seemed to be the only place that wasn't too cold and wet.

Thanks french_de and trackrunner - did you get beta from an actual book, or a website? I think I may be interested...

Tod Martin's AZ Tech Canyoneering book. He also runs a website of AZ stuff should be in the top of a search engine.
Some routes are covered, though not as good as Mr. Martins' book, in MK canyon hiking book (2006 edition I believe).
Also have a little more beta (more like ideas) straight from one of the two (Rich & Tod) perhaps most extensive explorers in the area lately. Not mine to share I'll let one of them share. Maybe unless you, someone, invite me along. Not that I think these are any secret or special. Just passed to me in private.
I'd like to get down there again. Feel free to contact me for car camping spots, hikes, other ideas. Not that I'm the most knowledge of the area.

The "Arizona Book" has only North, Badger and Sevenmile in it. The "Grand Canyon Book" has quite a bit more, or at least will when it leaves Todd's computer and becomes available to the rest of us...
