As many of you have probably heard, a woman was murdered and her body was left up Hobble Creek. I just found out today, that she worked for one of my clients. I have met her several times (though I didn't even know her name, so we were hardly close). Anyway, although I do find her death tragic, I didn't know her well enough to grieve over her death, but this is the first person I have ever met who was murdered and I do find it takes away from the security of my entire world.

Anyway, I just find the fact that this happened so close to home, to someone I have seen a bunch of times very sad and I wonder about the types of horrible people who can commit these types of crimes.

I know what you mean man. When I was living in San Diego my next door neighbor (who we shared a wall with and slept literally 40 feet from us) was raped and beaten to a bloody pulp one night. The weird thing is, we didn't hear it happening but of course the sirens and police when they showed up made quiet a racket.

But it totally messes with your security and belief system. At least it did for me. to this day, even though I live in a very safe neighborhood now, I still go around the house each night and make sure all windows and doors are locked and the shotgun is ready for action. And that happened 8 years ago. Might even be subconsciously why I chose a pitbull as a pet too. I'm such a sound sleeper he makes a great early detection system. :P

Killed her because he raped her. There's only one place for Damien, six feet under.

I read the story, and that's just nuts. You do have to wonder about people sometimes. Such a shame.

Can sympathize with you Dan. First time someone actively tries to kill you will drastically change the way you view the world.
Dude, I can't even tell you how many times I double check the door locks before bed even though I already double checked. It's not quite OCD but it always gets done.

One of the worst things to happen to me was when my friend was murdered by a guy we all knew. Some of you who live up here in Ogden may even remember it.

Doug Luna shot Rich several times up on North Ogden divide, turned the gun on the other guy with them, thankfully he was out of bullets and that guy lived. He then stole Rich's car and wallet. They picked him up in NV with a run away.

Rich and I went out a couple of times. Really nice guy.

Creepy thing, the group of friends I hung out with... we were at Layton Park one night before the murder. Doug and Rich were both with us. Doug would come up to us girls and whisper in our ear "So Clarice have the lambs stopped screaming" it sent chills up and down your spine the way he whispered that.

Couple weeks later he killed Rich. He was also the Missionary from Hell that would call in to x96 back in the day. I guess he kinda stocked Bill Alred, showed up to a birthday party his family threw from him. Weird!

His reason for killing Rich... he wanted to know what it was like to kill someone.

That rocked my faith and security for a bit. I just don't understand, never will.

It's pretty awful to know of or watch someone get murdered-really does turn everything upside down for a while. I was eating dinner in a restaurant with my 2 kids when a man I knew walked up to the table where his X-wife was having dinner with a date. He raised a gun and shot him twice in the head. All I could think of was he was going to turn around and shoot at my kids. I was getting them to hide under the table behind me and trying to call 911. He left and I tried to help the victim. It took a long time for me to not go out in public without my cell phone or to not jump when I heard a loud noise. My son was worried about going into a theater without one "just in case someone gets shot." I personally believe there should be an extra few years tacked on to the end of a murder charge just for all the fear it causes everyone involved.

Ug! How old were your kids?? That is terrifying.

13 and 15. At the end, they were a little embarrassed because I made them hide, but they didn't see it happen (I did) and I don't think they understood (obviously) what a mom goes through when her kids are in danger.

Thanks DiscGo. Didn't mean to hijack your thread. Just agreeing with you about how terrible it is to be even slightly involved when someone gets murdered. It really does shake everything up for a while.

I think you did a better job expressing the point of this thread than I ever did. These types of crimes permanently rob people of security and safety.

Anything like this is truly a senseless act. My family has its own tragedy. My father was killed by his brother. I was on the phone with my mother when my uncle walked in the front door and shot my father twice. I heard the shots go off and I threw the phone down and drove immediately to my parents' home. My father was already gone. Eight months later at my uncle's trial, he was acquitted. Enough money buys the right kind of defense and you get to walk.

Holy cow Savanna! That is crazy. I guess I really am just ignorant to many awful people there are around us. I once heard a quote that said the prayers of the righteous keep the world alive today. I certainly am finding more and more reasons to pray for the world around me.

Wow, sorry to hear that.

Anyone who has that "false sense of security" should watch the First 48 on A&E. That will show you what type of world we live in.

Prisons are not filled with criminals.... prisons are filled with poor and uneducated people that can not afford quality representation.

It's always closer than you think. In the 1980s, I was an assistant manager at Swensen's Ice Cream parlor that used to be down at Trolley Corners. This guy came in looking for a job. He was talking to the ceiling, I noticed, but since I wasn't the manager on duty, I didn't pay much attention to this guy, other than that he was extremely weird. The manager who was on duty asked if I thought it was okay for him to hire the guy. I said something stupid like, "do what you want if you feel good about it." Well, he was hired as a dishwasher and I caught him several times talking to the ceiling in the backroom. He was eventually fired by one of the other managers. A month or so later, I heard his name mentioned on the news in connection with a murder of an elderly woman. Seems this guy was schizophrenic and was off his meds, but when he was on meds, he was rational.

I also delivered mail on my mail route to the woman who killed her ex-daughter-in-law that was in the news recently. She lived in the apartment building I deliver to.
