Hey guys
I am considering a climb of Timp the last week of May (approach from either side.......depending).
I have never climbed Timp (I am from Idaho), but have climbed a lot here in Idaho. I am considering buying crampons and an ice axe for future climbs.......do you think they might be needed end of May on Timp??
YES!
The first time I climbed Timp with Dan, I thought I would be coming back in a bag with S&R. You really don't know what kind of snow you will encounter up there, it's much wiser to have a pair just in case.
I think you can even rent them at REI.
Yep. I'd bring 'em. I had to turn back in June a few years ago 'cause I was unprepared for the snow.

Yup.... crampons and axe are need at least until the end of May. I'd carry them into June.
. there will be far less snow on the west side in May
Check this site out http://tert.org/ ... they should start updating the conditions by may

In most years an ice axe is needed early or mid July. In dry years, sometimes you won't have that much snow by mid or late June, but I wouldn't count on it. No matter how dry the year though, an ice axe is always needed in May.

mountainrob,
If you're looking for someone to join you I would like to. I had Mt. Hood on my list in May but not sure i'll make it up there this year. Timp is a good substitute.
first I have to say every time I read the title of this thread some form of sick dyslexia comes into play and I read it as "Ice-axe/Tampons"
That said.. again if you are looking to add people to your ascent team just let me know :)
