I've been reading up and planning for my upcoming trip to Buckskin/Paria in April. I stumbled upon the following web blog of someone's account from a trip there just last month (Jan 14 2010). http://einsteinsintuition.com/2010/01/14/buckskin-gulch-the-delerium/

OMG. Where to begin? I think many of you will find this somewhere between amusing and horrifying. But I'll refrain from commenting more on it until you all catch up.

What makes it all the more fascinating was as I started poking around on this guy's website and learning a bit about him. He's apparently a "super smart" astrophysics whiz, but who did time in the Federal Pen for selling moon rocks. I kid you not! You can read about that on the FBI's web site:

http://www.fbi.gov/page2/nov03/apollo111803.htm

Or more colorfully at Gizmodo's:

http://gizmodo.com/5242736/how-an-intern-stole-nasas-moon-rocks

You'll love the part where he has sex on his bed, now covered in moon rocks, with his sexy co-conspirator. You can't make stuff up this good. But really the main canyoneering thing is his blog and all the risks he took on that trip in Jan. Oh, and too bad I didn't notice it sooner. A Bogleyite might have been able to pick up some free abandoned gear down there too...

A 3rd person biography is always interesting to read. 3rd person narrative always means narcissism to its nth degree.

2 million dollars for "trash" moon rocks eh? Sounds like quite the opportunist. haha.

To quote from his blog:
"Thad Roberts is the creator (discoverer?) of this intuitively accessible eleven dimen

To quote from his blog:
"...He has been dropped down a mine shaft in Peru, discovered a Tyrannosaurid tooth in the Utah deserts, skin dived off the shores of Hawaii, mined for rare gem stones, experienced zero gravity, extreme iso lation, and on and on.

Yeah, he forgot one other "accomplishment":

He has led 6 other people into a near-death experience by hypothermia in a non-technical canyon.

This guy's a little bit nuts, with a bigger ego than Ice's pal Totally Awesome! Dang! Cirrus2000 is not impressed...

I can't believe how he seems so cavalier about when they fell asleep while suffering extreme hypothermia. Seems to me like that could have pretty easily become the Big Sleep.

Then, letting his group get all separated and lost to the point that the one girl missed the Wire Pass trail, then backtracked missed it again and went back into Buckskin. Again, she could have decided she needed a nap too.

How about carrying all the girls on his back while getting his bare feet cut up on the rocks and his other pal wading in January frigid water in his underware, i.e. briefs?

Why didn't they fire up their stoves and drink some hot fluids?

He was also completely wrong about distances and didn't seem to really know where he was. He talks about being 15 minutes from the Paria when he was at the rope drop-off. Isn't that more like 4 miles?

But, hey, maybe I should see if he wants to go again in April with Robin and me  I'll add him to my permit for a moon rock or two :roflol:
