MOUNT ST. HELENS, Wash. -- The rescue effort resumed at dawn Tuesday for a climber who fell into the crater of Mount St. Helens.
Skamania County Undersheriff David Cox says officials have asked for a military helicopter to reach the climber, identified as 52-year-old Joseph Bohlig of Kelso.

But Cox said conditions Tuesday morning would not permit flying because of clouds and winds - or a ground rescue attempt because of the avalanche danger.

The Skamania County sheriff's office says Bohlig was standing on the rim Monday with a climbing partner when a snow overhang gave way and he fell about 1,500 feet into the crater. Other climbers called 911. The climbing partner made it down safely.

Attempts to reach Bohlig by helicopter Monday afternoon were unsuccessful.

Mount St. Helens, Washington (CNN) -- A climber who fell into the crater of Mount St. Helens volcano on Monday has been found dead, an official said Tuesday.

A U.S. Naval helicopter lifted the body of Joseph Bohlig, 52, from the south crater wall at 2:45 p.m. local time and flew it to Carson, Washington, for transport to the Clark County Medical Examiner's Office for autopsy, said David L. Cox, undersheriff of the Skamania County Sheriff's Office.
