This accident happened last week when I was in sulfite loadout trying to load a bi-sulfite tanker. I was all hooked up and waiting for product to start flowing. When nothing happened I called the plant to see what was going on with my product and they told me they had a ruptured line. I didnt hear about the rest of this until the next day. If you know anything about chemistry Sulfite in solution is known as Bi Sulfite. When sulfite gets wet the reaction produces SO2 gas which is nasty stuff. Just think of acid rain in your lungs.....nice mental picture I know but makes you wear your face mask for sure

kinda scary in a way. All those affected were contractors. Seems the regular employees were trained well enough to know what to do, or rather, the contractors needed a refresher. The first thing I did was to follow safety protocols and shut down my end of the system to ensure containment in my area, so it didnt affect me at all. I just didnt get to load my tanker. In any case, it was a contractors' carelessness that ruptured the fiberglas supply line running the solution that caused the gas innundation/ asphyxiation. There are inherent hazards in anyones' job. Complacency is something we all have to watch out for. Be Safe people. Be Safe :2thumbs:
