Does anyone recognize this arch? It is on the cover of the latest Mountain Gear catalog, and it just has a caption of a sandstone arch in Utah.

I agree that it is Harts Draw/Bobbys Hole, but I've never seen it iced up like that. I assume it's a pretty rare occasion.

Anyway, for those that don't know how to get there, the route starts just north of the Wind Whistle Campground on the Needles Overlook Road. Just north of Wild Whistle Rock is a rough dirt road heading SW which is the best place to park.

can you farm water for it, divert water somehow?

Not legally.

Supposed to be a pool at its base most of the time, so, I'd assume on a good winter it gets a fair amount of melt-freeze.

Heckuva photo. Got folks 'round here droolin' to be sure.

Got folks 'round here droolin' to be sure.

Looks cool, but it seems kind of short (30 feet or so) to be a destination climb(?). Unless of course the other falls in the drainage (there are several) were iced up too.

The next drainage to the north (starting near Soup Rock) has a much bigger drop (and is narrower) and the spring at the bottom of the fall flows all the way to Harts Draw, so I assume if Bobbys Hole is iced up, "Soup Canyon" would be too, especially since it tends to be a wetter drainage.

Here is a note I just received from Whit:

Hi Shane

I've decided to not disclose the location of this place, at least that's were I stand at the moment, who knows maybe I'll have a change of heart in the future. This has been a difficult situation for me, particularly with someone like you who has shared so much. I generally don't believe in keeping things a secret, I'm a photographer after all. On the other hand, and particularly with ice climbing, I've seen many areas become overcrowded and no fun to be at anymore. You are the sixth person to contact me asking about the location in the last couple of days, with more to follow I'm sure. (as I was writing this I got the seventh query from someone who 'belongs to a forum')

I believe Ralph and I were the first to climb this but who really knows and we don't care one way or the other. The biggest reason I decided to not tell anyone were this is located, is out of respect for Ralph. Ralph is old school bad ass and has done hundreds of first ascent rock climbs throughout the desert without boasting or posting to web sites, guidebooks, etc. I believe for him it's not so much about keeping things a secret rather that he wants people to still have adventure (the kind that's not possible when you have a topo), and for there to still be some mystery out there, and I can respect that philosophy. I actually heard about this formation years ago from a well known dirtbag around a campfire, he wouldn't tell me were it was either, but after living here in Moab for 5 years I finally figured it out. But I must say I really enjoyed the mystery of it, wondering where this thing was, always keeping an eye out for it.

Of course I'm sure people will figure it out eventually and the solitary experience which I happen to value more and more as I get older will be jeopardized, but hopefully not lost since this thing is a bit remote. The photo actually makes it look a lot longer than it really is, and it doesn't form very often I'm told.

Sorry, hope you understand. You are welcome to share this response with others.

Damm, you guys are good! Have fun down there, I have not heard if it's formed this year or not. By the way T, the photo of the mountain bikers on the arch on my web site is not in Arches, anyone guess where that one is?

hey whit, serious props to you for the cover shot. we were discussing it down at freezefest wondering where it was, and if the ice came in or if it was diverted. guess we know now! well done.

It's not Gemini (that was my first thought)... the canyon drops away much faster/deeper at Gemini.... also the outside arch at Gemini has a split in the center of it.

And for those playing along at home.... Where is it PART 2 is this photograph.

Way too narrow to be Gemini. My first thought was Musselman Arch, but it's definately not that one. Background doesn't fit and riding the arch is illegal. Looks vagely like Rainbow Arch, but it looks too narrow to be that one.

My first guess is Uranium Arch.

If it's not that one, we might need a clue. :2thumbs:

Scott, think your right. Looks just like Uranium on his homepage. Even the water "tar" marks line up correctly.

I thought it was Brimhall at first too - but that's way down in Capitol Reef - but I think Scott got it right with Uranium. If only there is a pic to compare.

Where were all you guys when I posted this http://www.bogley.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=19809 back in December, or don't any of you canyon types ever check out the Climbing and Mountaineering forum? I realize only real men venture there but I didn't think that excluded any of you guys.

the reason is simple, there aren't very many climbers on this forum... post in canyoneering, and you'll get a lot more eyes.

Probably not so much anymore. Last time I was there (March 2008) they had an official trail and signs saying park bikes here, no bikes beyond this point; etc. It didn't used to be like that.

They have completely fenced off the route down to Gemini now. Have to walk down. No bikes jeeps etc. The days of driving across the arch are over.

That's too bad. It used to be fun to drive over the arch and it made for good photos too. I've done it several times.

I guess I'm not surprised though since last time we were there (also March 2008), it was quite abused and there were about a dozen new tracks all over the place rather than the one loop they had in the past. If people would have stayed on the original road/track, it probably wouldn't have been a problem though I guess they might worry about people driving off the thing.

i think there were signs of that sort when i was there (Sept 06 or 07 - can't remember) but that didn't stop a good portion of our group from doing it...

p.s. the occasion was biking the white rim - great trip, but a support vehicle got a flat on the Shafer Trail exit - real fun!
