...and how much did the person counting down the 45 minutes donate? And then to wait another 15 minutes to make up the full hour to which is referred?

Wow, I was listening to Josh Bell just this morning while unpacking. Heard him on the Diane Reem show a couple weeks ago. He's amazing. I wish I could see him play and have to admit I would likely have walked by too.

i'm more surprised that someone didn't mug him and take the cash and fiddle.

and, he made $32 bucks for that hour. if i could play i'd be down there doing that. not bad wages.

totally agreed. I liked how there were a couple people around though and one lady did compliment him and a second lady completely recognized him and stayed to chat. Gives me hope for humanity.

To be fair, I also feel if he had been in a park or outdoor shopping setting he would have had a bigger audience. If I'm trying to catch a train or have to be somewhere I probably would not stop, no matter how bad I wanted to. Sadly.

Good call.

Now personally I would not pay $100 to see many people in concert but I do imagine that people would stop what they were doing to watch a band like U2 perform. Which again is (IMO) everything to do with what this story is about. It is our perception of an item which determines its value.

Without the instruments, costumes and stage I don't think most people would even recognize U2 if they were just 4 guys standing on a street corner singing. Which is what this is really all about....

Soon as you move the setting to a park, or add a stage or costumes, peoples perception and expectations increase.

Here's the entire article if anyone is interested:

It's an interesting read.

My friend Mark sent this to me back in July, before we went to see Mr. Bell perform. My friend

The washington post article about this is amazing. I actually got season tickets one year to the San Diego symphony orchestra as a bonus once, and I can verify that being in the presence of great artists can move one to tears. I soooo looked forward to those concerts each month. But perhaps that was because i knew I was going to see a professional, was wearing a suit and drinking wine. Did that alter my perception? The one person in the article mentions it being "a humbling experience", I know exactly what he is talking about. You almost feel unworthy to listen, as if it's a private conversation with god and you are eavesdropping on them. So I also understand how he stayed far back as to "give him some space".

It still bugs me to admit I would probably walk by the greatest musician in the world and miss it because I had to catch a train. Or would I be like the very few who heard a world class violinist playing a one of a kind violin, and recognized it for what it was? What a very interesting experiment!!! Been thinking about this all day, LOL.

the Hollywood Bowl Wandering off topic a bit but I love the Hollywood Bowl. I really felt like that was one of the few places I could go and escape "LA" and listen to great music outdoors. My wife had perks from her job while I was in law school in LA and I must say, the Hollywood Bowl was my favorite.

Christine is a lawyer too, Scott! She has these awesome seats with a little fold out table. We brought wine and sandwhich stuff and the orchastra mingled all around us before the performance. The acoustics were wonderful and it really did have a woodsy, non-city feel as the place is surrounded by trees, but, at one point during Bell's performance, a helicopter flew over and burst the bliss bubble for a couple of minutes. :(

BTW - I have something I wanted to give you at FF! I didn't have it with me when we met briefly at the Black Hole entrance, then I promptly forgot about it! I could've given it to John.
Guess it will have to wait til next year unless you wanna PM your address so I can get it in the mail! It is SO YOU!
