Source: Weis has cleaned out office

There's now no doubt that coach Charlie Weis won't be back. And NFL source tells us that Weis already has cleaned out his office, in anticipation of being fired when the team returns to Indiana after the conclusion of Saturday's game.

So who will ND go after? I read an interested article yesterday. It talked about ND lack of defense and how the top 5 teams and all the unbeaten teams in the nation rank top 10 nationally in defense and how this has always been a trend expect for the 2005 USC team that was ranked in the 40's in defense but racked up an average of 600 yds in offence a game.

They also need a recruiter for a coach. ND no longer recruits its self.

I know of two defense minded coaches that ND would probably not go after.

Here is who I think ND will go after and in this order....

Cincinnati's head coach
Standford's head coach
Boise State's head coach

I guess Bob Stoops could be in the mix too. He would be crazy to leave OU. Notre Dame just isn't what it used to be...not a top job or program anymore IMO.

You can actually bet on the next Notre Dame coach. Cincinnati 's Brian Kelly is the current odds favorite:

Brian Kelly (Cincinnati) odds 5-6

Jim Harbaugh (Stanford) odds 7-2

Urban Meyer (Florida) odds 4-1

Chip Kelly (Oregon) odds 9-2

Chris Peterson (Boise State) odds 5-1

Bob Stoops (Oklahoma) odds 10-1

Kirk Ferentz (Iowa) odds 14-1

Mike Shanahan (former coach of the NFL

first I think the Big East is a joke.

Stanford coach has turned that program around and is raising star.

Myer & Stoops are not leaving. Their schools/athletic dept/booster clubs can match the $$$ offer. Plus it can't get any better than their current situation.

Kind of shocked that TCU's coach isn't in there.

A couple of those are really wild guessess.... Both Whit and Leach are LDS, I don't see them coaching at ND.

Rumor is Patterson (TCU) is already scheduled to meet with ND offical's.

What about Bobby Bowden? He may be looking for job now.

While Whitt is LDS, ND really needs a strong defense coach if it wants to be a big time college team again. Probably won't find a better defense coach than Whitt. But yeah, don't see them actively courting him. Yet there is precedent of going outside the catholic faith for a head coach has happened. I believe Tyrone Willingham is Baptist.

I might be wrong... but I kinda have the feeling that Whittingham has his dream job. I know after Meyer blew through SLC part of the search for a new coach included the idea of hiring someone that would stick around.

Head coach at Utah is a nice gig... good, team, good school, good community, descent money. Whit has strong ties to Utah and young kids in school here. His Sugar Bowl win probably added 10 years to his job security no matter what the team does.

ND might pay a lot of money but that job is a pressure cooker and it's going to be difficult to be successful.... ND reminds me of the girl that was a 10 and thinks she still is, but she is really only a 6. That's a tough enviroment to deal with.

Patterson at TCU is off the table to go to Notre Dame. He just signed through 2016 at TCU.

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/news?slug=ap-t25-tcu-patterson&prov=ap&type=lgns

I would like to have read a bit more about him giving credit to the conference specifically BYU and Utah for making the conference tough and a three tough team conference unlike the WAC. But he is glowing in the light of his own fire (so he thinks) TCU gets respect because they are good but also they get respect by the computers because of the wins at BYU and against Utah.

Dang, I just re-read parts of the article and maybe Patterson is saying (between the lines) that he has a better chance at winning a national championship at TCU because the conference is crappy and he can beat Utah and BYU, the two toughest teams on his schedule. .... hmmmm. What think ye?

Doesn't mean a thing. ND has got the $$$$$ to buy out any contract.

Remember Urban Meyer. His contract was designed to discourage most teams from recruiting him (exept for his clause for ND, OSU, UM). Flordia's boosters easily raised enough money to buy out his contract at the U.

Yeah... you would need to see the buy-out clause.... I do know that Boise's Chris Peterson has a healthy buy-out. That was part of him getting the deal as head coach.

Boise went through a deal similar to Utah and Meyer with Dan Hawkins and didn't want a repeat.

Of course.... it now looks like they could get Hawkins (Colorado) back for a song. :haha:
