Bogley Family Fest - Zion - May 2010
Thursday through Sunday nights, May 20-23.

Watch the first Post for current info:

We're meeting for dinner at the Pizza Noodle Thursday evening around 6-6:30.

No real group plans for Friday night dinner (Cook in camp? Hit that Thai place just outside the park?)

We're doing a Pot-Luck dinner Saturday night, I haven

I would love to have a family fest and the end of may sounds like it should work nicely for me.

By the way I am embarrassed to admit this, but I didn't know you had kids Kev. I have wondered why you decided not have children but I didn't want to pry. So congratulations on what appear to me as two new children :)

This is a great idea. Except my two worst months are May and September. I have every kid playing soccer all over Utah those two months. With two cars and 4 kids it is nuts.

I'm interested in a family fest.... my only concern is May can be a little early for Zion Canyoneering. A lot of the good family routes are under snow, have high water issues or are filled with ice cold water.

I might be in the Zion area that weekend, but I'd have to rent a family.
Any ideas on what that might cost? :ne_nau:

I was actually more interested in the "wife" part.

I was actually more interested in the "wife" part.

Unless you throw in some rug rats it's a "couples" fest and not a "family" fest isn't it? But luckily I think all that would be required is to be able to tolerate our families as opposed to being required to have one.

I'd love a chance to do another fest with my family in tow. Not sure of the date yet though. I see that it is the weekend of my son's school's prom. I don't know if he had any ideas to go to that or not (it's not just for seniors). But I'll float the idea and see if we can swing it even if just as a quick flight to Vegas for the weekend.

If the canyon's are too cold maybe we can find some climbing routes that are family friendly? I bet Bo would have some ideas...

I can't come up with a family that fast, but I'll meet you after the fest for some canyons.

Let me know. :2thumbs:

Hey, ststephen, I heard good things - it would be great to meet you and yours there!

ScoutColorado, hope you can make it, too!

Brewhaha, it'd be great to see you again, and meet your crew!

Matt, after I drop the kids off at the airport on Monday the 24th, I plan to hit Boulder the following weekend. Free on weekdays? Or plans for Memorial Day long weekend? We'll talk...

Back at you Kev!

Well Aaron says the "prom" at his school is not for middle school kids so maybe this can work. He certainly said he'd like to get back in some canyons or up some mountains or something and it would be so great to do that with some other kids.

Cool - something adventurous to look forward to :naughty:

I'll just bump this every now and then; a little reminder to keep the idea simmering.

I've made a campsite reservation at Watchman for Thursday through Sunday nights, May 20-23. We've got 1 tent and 3 people - room for 1 more tent with up to 3 people. More sites available nearby, too, if anyone wants to do the so-called "civilized" sardine camping that you have to pay for. Hey, I like it. :2thumbs: We're in Loop D, number 34.

I checked out the reservations and there are good campsites remaining right around Kev. Looks like a good time to make a reservation as it would be a small cancellation fee if you needed to cancel in the future.

Is anyone planning to tent at Watchman?

My family is in for a Zion W/E getaway. I just need to round up some kids! My dot Finch will come for sure, maybe some of her friends, but I don't think my dot Sarah can get the time off of work. Damn her w/e work shcedule! :(

I'll go check out reserving a site!
Kev, what do you plan on doing? If Finch's friends come, I'm not sure they'd be up for Pine Creek - but I think they'd be OK with Keyhole. Could be, we'd end up doing more hiking than canyoneering, cuz these city kids are a bit wimpy------but, it would still be fun.

So, I will be there for sure, with some amount of kids!
Well, not really kids as they're in the 16 - 18 YO range - not quite kids anymore.....

Cool, Randi!

Y'all know that we'll be celebrating Felicia's & my birthday on Saturday, too, right?

I've kind of been talking it over with ststephen a bit, too. I definitely want to do a quick intro Keyhole, and really want to take the kids through Pine Creek. Other than that, on the table are things like Spry and Behunin. But depending on the kids and how they lean towards raps vs. long walks, something like the Subway on the more walking side, or Birch Hollow on the more rapping side.

Unfortunately, with the big snow year, I'm thinking that Mystery will not be in season yet by May 20. Last year, it was available from about the 18th on, except for the 24th. On the other hand, if it starts melting early, it may happen - and that's one I'd like to take them through.

We won't be pulling in until late Friday night, and we'll have to leave by 3ish on Sunday - not a long w/e for us sadly. But what the heck, we'll have two full days and a couple of nights in Zion with y'all ~

And with two Birthdays to celebrate too!

Do you think we could get a Subway permit? I'd attempt to take the kids through subway if we could a permit! I'm more concerned with taking them down big raps. Not my daughter, the other people's kids!

I just booked site 31. Looks like we'll have that whole neighborhood! I'm reserved Thursday through Sunday; I plan to be back to work Monday. It'll be me and my son so I doubt we'll be doing any serious canyoneering but we will be hiking and a narrows day trip sounds fun.
I'm going to try to get Josh or Cody or one of my brothers to bring family down and split my campsite with me...

We're in spot D29 (next to Don) starting 5/20 for 3 nights too!

All three of us will be there. Aaron (13) is definitely jazzed about doing some more technical canyons. My wife Robin a little less so :haha: The fact there is a mix of folks with varying itineraries going on was definitely a selling point for her.

We will probably get there late on Thursday depending on how early I can pull Aaron from school on Thursday. Hey this is outdoor education, right? We're somewhat constrained in camping/cooking gear we can take as we'll be flying in to Vegas but I'm sure it will all work out.

Can't wait! :five:

A little procrastination paid off, I got in the just-announced Southwest $39 fares going to LV on Thursday. Nothing that cheap coming back on Sunday though.

I was looking at the Loop D camping sites this morning. Might I suggest that if others are going to make camping reservations that they consider booking sites 8, 4 and 2 in that order. This would give us the entire field in the middle of the loop as we will have camp sites on both sides and not disturb other campers. It is also a great way to let the kids run a bit, but keep them contained.

...just a thought.

Wondering if there would there be any interest in doing a Bogley Singles Fest?

I'm single, but I wouldn't be too interested in a "singles" event.
I'm far too fond of a bunch of my married friends, too fond of young people (too young to date), and old people (too old to date) to wanna hang out with a bunch of single folks my own age.

This is me assuming you meant "single" as in single for the purpose of possibly meeting a suitable adventerous dating partner. This is what I envision for "any" singles oriented event.

It just sounds like it might be less fun than having a mixed crowd.
I've kinda shyed away from chick-fests as well for the same reason, but I sorta changed my mind on that count when I inadvertantly ended up hanging out with a bunch of chicks in Zion at an ACA event a few summers ago! Man, was that a good time!

I would say that you should come to the family fest anyway, & have a good time, even if you don't have a partner/kids!!!

Hey Deb,

Welcome to Bogley!

So... This spring looks like it might not be the best canyoneering time, but I'm sure we'll have a great time doing hikes, walks, whatever.

Canyons-wise, well, the discussion elsewhere about the amount of snowpack this year kind of goes into it. It will probably be a pretty late runoff down the narrows, meaning that trips through Orderville, Englestead and Mystery Canyons will likely be closed until after the end of May. We'll have to watch the Virgin River flow as the dates approach, and see what happens.

Be that as it may, I did get a reservation for 6 people on Sunday the 23rd for Mystery Canyon, in the lottery earlier this month. I don't know whether it will be of any use (highly unlikely) but it's there if we are able to take advantage of it.

One very big downer right now is the roadworks planned for the spring on the highway east of the Junction. Information on the roadwork (http://www.nps.gov/zion/parkmgmt/road-construction.htm):

[quote]Major roadwork will occur on the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway in 2010.

Zion National Park is anticipating that major roadwork will occur on the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway beginning as early as May of 2010. The roadwork will occur on a section of roadway known as The Switchbacks, from the junction of the Zion-Mt Carmel Highway and the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive to the west portal of the Zion-Mt Carmel Tunnel.

The Zion-Mt Carmel Highway was constructed in the late 1920

What a HUGE bummer about the road construction. :ne_nau: I do like driving in from that direction. I will be keeping an eye on it. Anyone recommend a website of up-to-date Zion road conditions?

The plan is to be there Thursday by mid afternoon. We do have to leave on Sunday, most likely in the morning to head back home. :(

I am bringing my full crew- 6 year old, 15 year old and possibly the husband. Both kids are great hikers and can go the distance. BUT my youngest maxes out at about 3-4 hours. This will limit us from doing the bigger or more technical hikes. Emerald Pools is definitely on the list. I am going to bring my gear just in case something works out where I can squeeze in a canyon. I do think my oldest and the husband will bring their bikes and could be very interested in mountain biking if anyone else is??

I will do my research on hikes that could work for us and let you all know.

We should arrive mid-afternoon on Thursday and will have all day on Friday and Saturday to play. Sunday we can do something that's a "half day". I would want to be finished by early afternoon to give time to clean up, travel to LV and eat some dinner.

It is unfortunate that we're limited by the snow pack and now by the road. But I'm sure it will be lots of fun no matter what we do. It would be awesome to do Mystery but like you say it's probably not going to happen.

Of the canyons left we'd be interested in Birch or maybe Telegraph on Friday.

Then I've never done Subway and would love to spend a day there but I don't think Sunday would be a good day for it as I don't want to have to rush through.

I wasn't paying enough attention to the permit window and just now there were no Friday and only 3 Saturday permits for Subway. I grabbed the 3 so if someone else gets some walk-in permits we could team up. Or if Pine Creek/Keyhole work out we can swap permits around and offer these ones up for others.

Anyway, even if we're just doing some hikes it will be great to have a group to enjoy them with!

Hey Kev - thanks for the warm welcome. I really do not know what to expect from the hikes, but the emerald pools sounds nice. I am just excited to explore another part of UT other than Arches and Canyonlands.

Of the canyons left we'd be interested in Birch or maybe Telegraph on Friday.

Watch out for the "snow bridges" in Telephone! I loved that canyon with snow in it, but the bridges were a bit tenuous and freaky!

Seems like there was one anchor in telephone that was just a small chockstone stuck in a crack? Wasn't much else around as I recall. That would be very hard to find if there was any snow. But I could be nuts. :ne_nau:

Just an update on permits: I got 12 Keyhole for Friday and 12 Keyhole for Saturday. Whatever else is done those days, a quick tour through Keyhole (depending on road line-ups) can be done before or after... And I'm kind of keen to try a moonlight Keyhole trip...

OK, I also grabbed 6 Telephone for Friday... We can all mix and match. Hey, a $5 investment, how can it go wrong? :ne_nau:

Are you planning on taking your kids down Telephone Kevin?

Also, I thought Keyhole was going to be inaccessible due to the road construction.
The plan is to bring my youngest daughter, her boyfriend & 1 or 2 of her girlfriends, and none of them have canyoneered before except Rachael so I was planning on keeping things mild-mannered.
If Keyhole is accessible, we'd probably want to do that one on Sat. (guess I better pick up a permit) +/or a short hike.

Or, depending on the mood of the crew, we might opt for hiking instead of canyoneering. I've always wanted to hike the forks of Taylor Creek

I plan to take them through Kannarra Creek on our way home Sunday.
Anyone want to join us for this?

Is it too soon to start thinking about pot lucks and such? Which night(s)? Anyone planning to bring a gas BBQ? Or will we just use the campground BBQs?

I grabbed 3 permits for Subway on Friday. That's all there was. I think there was/is more for Sunday but I can't do such a long canyon that day. It would be cool if we could get some walk-in Subways but that may be too hard. Probably my wife would give up her slot if some other adult wants to come with my son (13) and me.

I know Kev has a bunch of Keyhole permits too.

We might be up for that. We do have to get back to Vegas that evening, but there should be plenty of time for a decent hike and I don't think this significantly adds to the mileage back in that direction does it?

I think Robin is quite happy to do more hiking/exploring than swimming/downclimbing :haha:

Well, it does sound a little bit tough for them (I've never done it, so don't know for sure.) I think I'd do it if it were with a group that was not much more newbie-heavy than we'll already be with my two kids. I like the idea of hitting Angels Landing on the way up, or on the way back. But I have reservations, so... :ne_nau:

Is it too soon to start thinking about pot lucks and such? Which night(s)? Anyone planning to bring a gas BBQ? Or will we just use the campground BBQs?

I know nothing of pot lucks - I don't generally socialize when camping, cuz I usually do it alone... :haha: But Saturday is a birthday for a couple of us - I'll be four and a half freakin' decades old! - sounds like a good night for celebrations! I do plan on having lots of alcohol and snacks with me, and I can share.

So here's my thinking so far: We will be getting in on Thursday late afternoon. On Friday, depending how many people there are, and who's interested, I'd like to do a popular, but non-permit-stricken trip like Angels Landing, and maybe Telephone if it isn't super tough - it would be better than doing it on the Saturday or Sunday, I'm guessing. Later in the day, an early evening romp through Keyhole would be fun, for folks who have arrived Friday afternoon?

Saturday, how about some easier canyon like Yankee Doodle, early, then back to the park for something else later. Keyhole for people like me (those who love it), or a hike somewhere.

Sunday, I've got my Mystery permit in my back pocket, so if the Narrows cooperates, I'll definitely do that with the kids, and up to 3 others who would like to join in. If not, well, we'll see what comes up. I'd be willing to do Kanarra, too...

We're staying Sunday night, too, and leaving Monday mid-morning.

I am up for anything as long as my kids are not overly tired and driving me nuts. Actually last hike we took Sarah on (Hidden Canyon) she was a little trooper. She started to get a little complainy on the way back out but I lit a fire under her cute hind end and she smoked us down the trail. As I slowly made my way off the trail she being the smart alec she is says "I have been sitting her for 15 min waiting, what took you so long." So maybe we are entering a new era of childhood. Where I can take them on longer hikes and they are dragging me off the trail instead of the other way around. At this point I am not sure Spencer will be with us. He doesn't think it necessary to do homework.

I have only been through Subway so I am super excited to do another canyon. I still need to hike Angel's landing and pretty much I am just looking forward to celebrating and hanging out with friends.

I can probably bring a gas grill. It is a nice one too. I have to move it south anyway. Why not that weekend. I don't make any promises because it depends on how it would ride in the back of that little trailer that gave me so much grief in October when I drove down to Gooseberry Mesa. I am not going to lie to you.... I am a bit nervous about towing now.

I guess I go as far as I feel safe with them. If it gets to where I am freaking out becasue they are to close to the edge, then I stop and go back. Or hang out for those who want to go all the way and wait and rest with the kids. My kids are pretty good about not doing anything that scares them. So if they don't like it they won't do it.

Having never been up there I really don't know how scary it is. I have only heard.

That's a tough one, Don. I'm comfortable with my 13 and 11 year olds, but E's a little younger. On the other hand, it's one you and one him - a very good ratio. Personally, I think that in your shoes I would talk to him about it - impress on him just how real the danger is if he is careless, but also what an amazing experience it is. If he's willing, and you're comfortable that he takes it seriously, then go for it! Of course, you know better just how reliable he is - whether he can be counted on to not horse around.

Wow, campground's full huh? FF - oh, yes, I'll be there. It's definitely a go this year.

I've never been. Cedar City is about 50 miles (I think) from the I-15 split, and Kanarra is S. of Cedar so it's prolly anywhere from 20 - 30 miles out of your way I'm guessing.
My plans are subject to change depending on the mood of the kids! I don't know what to expect, but I'm hoping they're gonna love it & I think this hike is pretty mild mannered.

Food Fest is right! I think for the BFF "Bogley Family Fest" you & Cody ought to do another seafood stew or whatever that dish was at FF.
That was delicious!!! Best I ever had! ♥
I'm sad that I won't be coming to FF this year! :(
I'll be in Mexico during that time.

I've been up there a few times but after those two falling deaths last year I'm not so sure about taking E up there. How do you all feel about kids up there?

I took my girls up there when they were 14 & 16 & I was super worried the whole time. Just over-protective mom stuff...I kept telling them to be careful, and hold onto the chains, etc. I stayed close behind in spots so I could catch them if they fell (yeah right). I was probably annoying the hell out of them, because they were being careful, but a mom's a mom I guess.
I think it's pretty safe as long as you stay on the trail and watch your footing. One of the biggest problems I see is that too many people try and skirt around slow-pokes. You just have to be patient with so many people up there. Don't skirt around the traffic but stay on the trail.
There are some places on & especially off the trail where you can get ball-bearing sandy spots & you have to be cognizant of that.

It was a great experience for all of us.

Pictures? :)~

I think it can be done safely with kids. You need to instill a sense of seriousness and if they are inclined to freak out about heights it wouldn't be a good idea. I did it with Aaron when he was maybe 9 years-old? He also did Half Dome at a young age, but I did short-rope him to me for that.

But if it is still in high flow conditions I'll offer that permit up to other more experienced folks and gladly join the Keyhole/Birch trip. I'd love to hit Mystery if that pans out, but I'm good for whatever. Kinda will want to see how Robin's feeling and what other options might be available for hiking if she's had her fill of canyons.

If you're talking to me Don about Sat. - yeah, totally open. It's only me and the kids so far. Maybe Hank too if he's able and willing (by able I mean if he's not working).
It's an easy canyon - and pretty darn short but the water is cold so a wet suit is definitely needed! And neo socks! And neo gloves for the little guy would be good too!

We're gonna be getting in pretty late on Fri. and might sleep in a bit on Sat. Like we won't be popping out of bed at 6AM raring to go..it'll probably be more like stirring at 7 - up by 8 - know what I mean?
I figure a leisurely not-too rushed agenda will work well for our group.

I hope to do a keyhole descent and then maybe a hike up to Hidden Canyon or some other half day thing...

but - if for some reason they don't wanna do Keyhole I might bail on it and do Taylor Creek of of Kolob Terrace - a nice hike I've heard...or some other thing we decide spur-o-the-moment.

So I guess I'm just saying that even though I'm making a plan - we will be pretty spontaneous and just kinda go with the flow of the kids mood. This trip is for them, & my main goal is ensure they have a really good time.

So plan on joining us please, and hopefully it WILL happen!

Anyone planning stuff for really young kids? I've got an 18-month-old and a 4-year-old. The 4-year-old probably would be happy just riding the shuttle the entire time and then getting out and running around like a crazy person.

I was thinking Icebox, but I don't know if my 18-month old could handle the hanging belay station on the first rap ;)

I wonder if Felicia threw back her camping res for #33 and if some poor unsuspecting person/family is going to find themselves surrounded by all of us...:naughty:

Still pondering what to bring/make for the pot luck. It's hard when flying. I have a burner that fits on a propane tank I'll bring and I can use the grills in camp. Maybe a dry-rub on a tri-tip and cook up some onions and peppers for a fajitas? Can someone local bring lighter fluid? Either that or take what I don't use off my hands. If local folks throw in an extra camp chair that would be cool too.

http://www.bogley.com/forum/showthread.php?39304

I'm guessing 6 to 6:30 at the Pizza & Noodle? Anyone?

As for canyons/hikes I'm planning:

Friday: Angels Landing (maybe another day?), Yankee Doodle or Lower Fridge, Keyhole.

I plan to do both Keyhole and Pine Creek on Saturday. I have a 12 spot permit for Keyhole (9 free), and hope to get a walk-in for Pine Creek. Anybody want to join?

I still have a reservation for 6 in Mystery on Sunday, but the flows do not seem to be tapering off yet, with 5 days to go. Hmmm. Behunin is a backup - 6 spots (3 of us)

I'm leaning towards doing Subway on Friday, but want to get a little more beta on flow levels. My family (3 of us) are up for Keyhole and Pine Creek as well. Love to join you Kev on Saturday if that makes sense. Or there is enough interested people maybe we can organize another walk-in permit group Sat or Sun?

Maybe I should jump on your Sat. permit too Kev so the girls and I have a group to go with!
My few interested/semi interested parties are maybes! That would be Don & E and Hank.
So yeah, go ahead and add us three!

If more people wanna do Keyhole on Sat. - I can go ahead & keep the permit I have and just reduce the numbers.
Sucks in situations like this that you can't have more than 12 in a group.

Don
05-18-2010, 09:51 AM
Yeah, E and I are on board for Keyhole. Either Friday or Saturday; we've got an open schedule, but would rather do it with a big-fun-group! He may be a little slow on rappels. In fact, he will not be rappeling; he will need to be lowered down or go dual with me. I'll be bringing all my hardware and ropes and plan to rent him a wetsuit & helmet.

Cirrus2000

Kev - what does your Friday group for Keyhole look like?

If you get in on Kev's Fri. trip - I'll bail on my Keyhole permit and go with Kev Sat.
If not, I'll keep my permit and we will be a small FUN group! Maybe bigger if more folks sign on.

I think wet-suits can be rented over at ZAC's for $15
How big is E Don? I might have a suit that will fit him - it's smallish - used to be Rachael's when she was 12 or so.
I'll bring what I have. Have you guys been keeping an eye on the weather forecast?

Duh! Sorry! OK, 6 of us in Keyhole and Pine Creek on Saturday. So if Randi et al joined, that would make 9-10 for Keyhole. Then we'd see about Hank - it would be great if he could make it.

Perhaps D&E and C&S could go on Friday, and see how they & the kids liked it, and see if they'd do it again the next day. (I think I'll be convincing my kids to go both days, but I'll try to be - moderately - flexible.:haha:)

Edited to add: Hang on - it looks like 2 groups for sure, anyway!!!

Don

As much as I don't want to miss out on the big group Saturday I think Friday would be better for me & E to do Keyhole. We're not sure where yet, but our Saturday will probably have to be non-technical.

Jaxx,
We're meeting for dinner at the Pizza Noodle tomorrow evening around 6-6:30.
I haven't heard plans for Friday night dinner (I'll either cook in camp or hit that Thai place just outside the park).
We're doing a Pot-Luck dinner Saturday night, I haven’t heard a time for that but, just come by Saturday evening. We're monopolizing the D-loop in Watchman (Loop D sites: 06, 08, 15, 28, 29, 31, 32, 33, 34) just come around and look for Bogley stickers and tee-shirts.
I don't have details for meeting up for hiking. I assumed we'd get all that sorted at the Pizza Noodle...

Erik,
Can't speak for everyone but I've got a full site. Probably worth you time to come around though; even if there's no room for you we could point you in the right direction and you'll be able to hook up with us for hiking...

Jeep took a dump. At this point I don't know if it's the radiator or a hose 'cause the fluid had gotten into the fan so everything is wet. And my little brother pointed out that there are worse things than spending the night in Beaver.

Excellent, glad you're coming down!

Good question. Items which can't be cooked quickly at the campground are a good bet: potato salad, chili. Are there vegetarians among the group? Always good to have something w/o meat. Meat wise I've heard about a smoked turkey and I'm going to do a tri tip for fajitas.

Gotta go load the car and head out now...
