NASCAR went to "The Chase" to inject excitement into the last few races of the season....

Current standings:

1) #48-Jimmie Johnson
2) #5-Mark Martin, -108
3) #24-Jeff Gordon, -169
4) #2-Kurt Busch, -211

Under the old, non-Chase system:

1) #48-Jimmie Johnson
2) #14-Tony Stewart, -13
3) #24-Jeff Gordon, -56
4) #5-Mark Martin, -361

I did a little bit of research on Jimmie Johnson and became quite impressed with what he has accomplished in his relatively short Cup career. His first race was at Lowe's in 2001, but he didn't became a full-time driver until the 2002 season.

He has compiled a rather amazing record if you just examine his placement in the point standings at the end of each year:

2002 -- 5th place (rookie season)
2003 -- 2nd place
2004 -- 2nd place
2005 -- 5th place (was 2nd heading into Homestead, but was involved in an early accident that relegated him to a 40th place finish, dropping him to 5th in points)
2006 -- Champion
2007 -- Champion
2008 -- Champion
2009 -- Likely Champion (all that is left to do is crown him).

I have to say that is a stellar record.

Yep, quite the record. Jeff Gordan must be wondering-"what the hell did I do getting him started"

Hendrix is just a notch above the competition right now.

Hendrix is just a notch above the competition right now.

The only misstep Hendrix has made lately is dumping probably the most talented/exciting driver in NASCAR for Junior.
