Not quite sure where to put this thread...

Just wondering if anyone has ever climbed trees recreationally? Just did my first climb the other day and had a pretty good time. Not exactly the thrill of canyoneering, but I also don't have to drive 4 hrs to do it, and with the cold weather much of the rock climbing is getting chilly for my fingers. Its also a fun way to practice rigging rope..

anyone anyone?

i don't do it, but one of my roommates in alaska is an avid tree climber. not sure there is really big stuff here in utah, but when he's out on the west coast, they get after some tall ones... seems fun.

let us know if you find some more resources on it.

I don't know any tree climbers, but I find the sport interesting.

Cool. I agree, I'm not sure on tree size around here. My buddy and I are going in search of some this weekend though, we'll see what we come up with. I'll take some pics.

thanks to google I did find that there was a tree climbing competition held in Brigham City, so maybe we'll start looking there.

I remember when they did that competition here. I think it was at Pioneer Park. Take the Forest Street exit and head east toward town. When you cross the railroad tracks, it is on the left (north) side of the road. It's easy to find as it is the one with the swimming pool and all of that. There are some good size trees in that park. Might be worth a shot.

I didn't go watch the competition as I didn't know about it until it was over, but I saw the pictures in the paper. Looked like it could be a good time if you have the equipment.

I've scouted a few trees to climb. Something I've wanted to try.

There is a community of Tree climbers. Trying to figure out how Tree Climber International climb a tree. Looks like a rope is thrown over and they use on strand to connect to the harness and ascend the other strand with the rope sliding over the tree limb.

A more appropriate forum may have been the the climbing/mountaineering. Kind of climbing related. :ne_nau:

There are quite a few ways depending on the equipment you have. My gear supply isn't so large so I'm climbing double rope, throw the rope up over a strong branch, aply the cambium saver, tie one end of rope to harness use a blakes hitch on the other rope and make your way up. Just like you said. Its a pretty good time.

Your right about the forum, just thought it might get a bit more action here.

Sweet! Thanks for the tip. We'll be heading there this weekend sometime. I wish I had some nice think arborist rope, but the Imlay ropes I have seem to work alright.

I had some buddies back in the day who would climb trees with their ice climbing gear. Pretty crazy to see them hack their way up with crampons and ice axes.

Cool. Have fun. I would come and watch but I'm going to be out of town at the cyclocross race in Heber.

Hopefully, nobody comes and hassles you about it.

At my age, if I want to get to the top of the tree, I pull out my Stihl chain saw and cut the tree down and then walk over and touch the top. :haha:

As a kid I would climb any tree. Not so much any more except once a year the past 4 years when hanging spot lights in some big trees for a church harvest fair. :ne_nau:

x2

As a kid there were two ways to tell if the mail lady had come with the mail delivery: walk the 1/2 mile driveway to the box to see the red flag, or climb to the top of the tree on the side yard to see the red flag.

Getting the mail was my job and climbing trees was how I got it done. :roflol:

Lest any one get this crazy idea nowadays... don't. I had to defend a guy who had professional tree climbing stuff (he was an arborist/ tree climbing nut) and climbed a city owned tree. City people said he damaged the tree to the tune of 5K making it a felony. Needless to say, we reduced that charge to nothing but only after a lot of legal work. Trees have feelings too..... :haha:

I'll snowmachine in yellowstone all day, but I'm not up for the ice climbing a tree. Much better ways that don't harm the tree. It keeps the peace a little better too

ya sure, come on out. I'm not sure what time exactly, but I'd wager early saturday morning. there is a chance we might try and pull it off friday evening, but with school it might be dark before I can make it. I'll post the exact time when we figure it out.

This book talks about recreational tree climbing and searching for giant trees. Very interesting.

Looks like we'll be at Reese Pioneer Park at 9 am. Come and check it out if ya want. Bring whatever gear you may have

We can hardly call ourselves beginners, but should be a fun time outdoors.

They owned the house and the land the tree was on.
How the winter air pollution in Yellowstone these days?
