We were out walking with our dogs today out the Smokey Mountain Road. Less than 50 feet off the road on what appeared to be a well traveled (probably cattle) trail when the little dog stepped on a coyote trap next to the trail covered with brush.
End of hike.
Checked with the rangers. Trapping is legal on the monument. However, to damage, move or even disarm a trap is illegal. Hikers, their children, and pets are fair game, but the traps are protected. So be aware of this.
And they say Angel's Landing is dangerous.

Only if you get caught.

I ran into some traps last year and was pretty unhappy to find out that they were legal, even just a few feet from the road. I don't think they ever found out who triggered all the traps.

On a side note COMEPLTELY unrelated to this thread. I hear pawn shops give you up to 10% of the value for traps found in dumpsters.
