Does anyone know if the Arches Park Rangers offer a tour of the Firey Furnance in December? Thanks!

Yes they do. Usually less people go as well. When I went in December I had my own private tour as it was snowing and nobdy else showed up. They offered to refund and let me go on another one but I elected to go anyway (less people = better IMO)

YEA! You just made my day! I was worried I might have to go with a tour company for a whole lot more money!

OK, um, question #2, What kind of pants to wear for winter Moab... I am exposing my ignorance of cold weather. I am a Florida girl. Do you really need ski pants for snow hiking? Someone please educate me!

It does snow in Moab and if you are from Florida, I expect anything below 60 is considered "freezing" to you.

I would advice wearing layers of clothes just in case.

FYI- I think that Winter is the best time of visit Moab. I love to go in the end of February when it is starting to warm up a little more but still months before a ridiculous amount of people show up.

Thanks for the info! I can't wait to be back in Utah. And yeah, I chill pretty easily! I guess I'll just take a variety and layer it up. I did buy one pair of ski pants...yuck, pretty bulky! I am glad to hear Moab will be "slow". I hate crowds.

That would not be a fun hike....

If you want some nice fun hikes try these:

Devil's Garden Primitive Loop

Corona Arch

All of these are great winter hikes near Moab.

+1

Tourist town off season is the time to be there. Which is why I'll be in Moab this weekend!

(Probably going to camp at Goose Island (Thursday evening through Sunday morning) so if anyone is in the area keep an eye out for my big red jeep with the Bogley sticker and come say hi!)

CRAP.
Arches site says March through October and I was really considering the ranger hike in the Furnace for Saturday (21 Nov).
I'm going to be down there with a couple girls from work and Allison (abirken) the work friends have never been to Moab and I've never been more than spiting distance into the Furnace.
Anyone interested in showing us around Saturday? I'm thinking dinner in town and a beer or two or twelve could be in the works...

Also, think about it, me and three beautiful women need someone to go hiking with us....

A whole harem of women! Sheesh Don!

Yup........trying to make this happen. Will come down early Saturday am to hike with you all and then if it's early enough in the day, I'd be down to do dinner. Don't want to be driving back home too late at night. Or if enough beers are had, looks like the back of my truck could be my nest for the night. HAHA!! :2thumbs:

Even though the ranger-guided tour is off, I think you can still hike in the Fiery Furnace, as long as you get a permit.

This will be my first time to Moab. I am really looking forward to the trip. I have my heart set on the Firey Furnace.

Does anyone have any suggestions for hikes in Canyonlands? Thanks!

Canyonlands is a massive area divided up into 4 districts.... Needles, Island in the Sky, Maze and Horseshoe Canyon. To drive from the Needles into the Maze requires a full day of nothing but driving. You need to do a little basic research and tell us which part you intend to visit and than we can suggest some hikes.

And a little FYI... the Maze is considered the most remote area in the lower 48 states. It's something you must prepare for.

Needles district is about 80 miles from Moab. You'll want to depart Moab early if you're contemplating just a day hike in the Needles.

Best hike would be to go to Druid Arch from the Elephant Hill parking lot/trailhead. That would be 11 miles round trip on well defined, but very rugged trails. Or you could head for the Joint Trail from the same Elephant Hill trailhead. That would be a 10 mile roundtrip which would include a loop thru picturesque Chesler Park. You could even combine the two hikes into one 12 mile plus round trip hike which would be a long day during a short day of daylight.

Make sure you have a park trail map or obtain one from the entrance station/visitors center. There are shorter trail loops you can do in the Needles District that will give you the full flavor of that area.

No water sources out on the trail so carry plenty with you.

Starbucks. These girls are kinda young and this isn't their scene. Took an hour to do their makeup before we could even go to the furnace. :ne_nau:
