After failing in our attempt to ghost Smiling Cricket a few weeks ago, a group of us got together again this week to shake down a few more new techniques, celebrate Tom

Nice! Is that the sand trap??? I was kinda thinking/wondering if it was something like that. pretty cool. I wonder what one would do if say No Kidding was full of water? Could be pretty tough and possibly frightening.

Yep, that's it. Would be intimidating, fortunately it's real easy to check water in there, and walk back to the car...

We'll definitely run it at freezefest this year if it's dry. You'll be in attendance, yeah?

Yea, I would enjoy that. Time to start thinking about making it happen. I need to check on the dates and see what friends of mine want to go, I can probly only make it for 2 or 3 days tops.

I need to get out and meet you guys though and do some tough canyons.

Strong work!

is that a rope tarp ? probably easier to use and more versatile than a potshot (?)

You don't need friends for freezefest, there will easily be 8 or more people doing canyons on weekdays and 30 - 50 on the weekend! More and more people show up every year.

Yea I realized I don't NEED friends for the canyoneering aspect, although I like to hang with my buds. Besides that they help offset the cost of gas, make the drive more enjoyable, and possibly will drive thier car instead of me having to drive mine.

Dan,

Looks like you had a great trip. I was checking out the sand trap pictures, if I am following the concept when you pull it down it inverts itself and dumps the sand? When is Tom going to be selling it?

that is pretty much the idea. it never really inverts, so much as it just empties itself out.

not sure when Tom will sell them, probably will be a couple months? he can answer better when he returns to civilization. he's still out in north wash on some epic 13 day trip or something.

Inverted was probably the wrong term. What are you guys using to load all the sand? Hands, small shovel?

Steve invented the "maxi pad." You'll have to ask him what it does... :roflol:

I had just pulled down 3 potshots after a 60ft rap at the Lake and 2 of them split at the seams, so I figured there had to be another way......so friction and surface area led me to design and make(my wife Maria being a FAA Rigger) the Maxi-Pad,aka Sandtrap(the politically correct version). Have fun out there......pass the pad (trap)please!

I'm assuming that's the khaki green (ish) folded over, sand filled item that folks are rapping off of. Makes so much sense! I'm intrigued at the ghosting possibilities!

I believe Tom (Imlay Canyon Gear) is going to manufacture them. Release is still a few months away?

In the meantime, I understand that it is recommended to buy Steve a beer whenever passing through Springdale.

I cannot really release them till I get the straps made professionally - which means May 1 at earliest. There will be a few around before then for people to use.

Probably about $100.00.

That color is "Tan", Kev. Says so, right on the roll...

looking at that picture of the trap. it looks like the straps are binered and they are rapping from there. would it be possible to somehow incorporate rap rings into the straps, then the rap rope could be pulled and the retrieve rope could simply "unroll" the sand cleanly from teh trap ? would that be any more efficient than as it appears in the pic where it seems sand has to funnel out the ends or sift out the openings ? or would my scenario of "unrolling" the sand from the trap create a larger snag issue w/ that much more surface are of fabric free to catch ? and honestly, it looks like a decent snag issue to begin w/. how have they performed in that aspect so far ?

we've stuck it once so far on a chokestone, but only because of my own mistake. the 4 cords that make the rap side actually wrapped a chockstone perfectly. i jugged it and retrieved it. it really doesn't "roll" out. the pull cord runs down the middle, and pushes the sand out the sides, and after enough sand empties, the whole trap starts to slide out, the rest of the sand emptying as the trap kind of bunches up on itself.

plus, in your scenario, you'd need 50% more rope on each drop. part of the lure of the trap is that it makes rope silos even more efficient, because no ropes get pulled through anything. you just pull the whole anchor out...

obviously, you can't use it for every situation, but it is loads easier than lots of other options (including building deadman anchors, or even trying to sling chockstones...) seriously takes like 3 minutes for each anchor, once the team is up to speed on it, and the sequence of things is smooth.

Greenest "tan" I've ever seen... :haha: Probably just all that green light in the canyon.

Man, I'm really keen to try this thing. I figured the pull cord in the middle, and the whole thing collapses and comes down. Cool!

Way to go, South Africa Steve!

Really nice pictures, Tom. Thanks for linking to them. I'd like to get to the North Wash soon, maybe Thanksgiving weekend.
