Jeff Bertolucci - Well, Google's done it again: Tossed a monkey wrench inside a well-oiled, profitable machine, and gummed it up good. Of course, I'm talkingoogle gpsg out the company's foray into the turn-by-turn GPS navigation market, a bold move that's bound to cause more than a few migraines at the headquarters of GPS kingpins Garmin and TomTom.

Google's map play could be bad news for the Apple iPhone, too, particularly if it convinces folks to buy one of the new Android 2.0 handsets that support the nav system. Why? Because Google Maps Navigation is free. And it's not a half-baked freebie either. As this demo video illustrates, the nav program is a useful tool that deftly blends Google's map and street views with traffic information and voice commands.

Not bad for a free app, wouldn't you say? Contrast that with the $100 price for either TomTom GPS software for the iPhone, or Navigon's Mobile Navigator North America. To many consumers, these apps will now seem wildly overpriced. GPS app vendors may have to cut their prices, offer ad-supported free versions (and I wonder if Google's nav app will ultimately take that route), or trot out amazing new features to warrant their high costs.

Google Maps Navigation could have a huge impact on the overall smartphone market as well. It may be the first killer app for Android, a must-have feature that lures consumers--particularly commutergoogle gpss seeking a smartphone with good nav features--away from the iPhone.

Of course, the iPhone has its fair share of advantages --100K apps come to mind -- and Apple has less to fear than the GPS vendors. It's no surprise that both TomTom's and Garmin's stock prices took a dive on the day of the Google announcement. The big bad wolf has entered the woods, and it's giving away free treats.

Doesn't google maps have a gps thingie already? When I drive through the city or any place I have cell phone signal, my google map page gets updated and my little locator point moves in the direction I am driving. The problem arises when the signal goes dead.

its amazing to me how Google is revolutionizing the world - in terms of universality. It's always interesting to hear what's going to come out next...

I picked one up last Friday. I have a BlackBerry Tour that I was trying to use for everything I wanted in a device and it just wasn't cutting it.

I still have the Tour but have put it out to pasture for work duty alone. It works fine to send and receive email and make some phone calls. That's about it.

In the few days of ownership, I like what I see in the Droid but have already found a few quirks. First, if you have a personal email address and you want to set it up using POP3 - good luck. I battled for 2 days straight with limited success. I ended up forwarding my personal email to my gmail account. As you can imagine, this Google phone likes Gmail accounts. It is also seamless with Youtube. In fact, I recorded and uploaded this sample video to Youtube. I was surprised at how quickly it uploaded.

The APP store for the Droid is like comparing the corner gas station/mini mart to a Super Walmart to Apples App Store. Like 10 to 1. Or 1 to 10 I guess.

Call quality is great. The 5MP camera is sharp and the screen is large and crisp. The snap out QWERTY keyboard is ok, but my one HUGE complaint is that I have yet to find the question mark key on it. ???? WTF?

It's on the touch keyboard - but I still haven't located it on the pop out keys.

The browser is quick and zooming in on a webpage isn't that bad, even though the pinch feature on the iphone is much preferred.

Since I am married to Verizon - this is the best alternative to the iphone for me. YMMV

My droid is on it's way. :2thumbs: i'm working on building apps for it right now... a smaller app store means i can sell my apps before everyone knows how too. :haha:

By the way - I found the "?" key. Plain sight, right next to the return key. Yes - I had massive flatulence of the brain. :ne_nau:
