Body of BASE jumper found in Millard County

Millard County sheriff's deputies have found the body of a missing Missouri BASE jumper.

The Sheriff's Office on Friday afternoon had few details about the find, but they confirmed they had located the body of 31-year-old LeRoy Buckley, from Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

The body was found Thursday afternoon in the Notch Peak area of the western part of Millard county. Efforts were under way Friday afternoon to recover his remains.

Search and rescue crews had been looking for Buckley for nearly 10 days. Millard County Sheriff Robert Dekker had said Buckley hiked to Notch Peak on Sept. 9 to jump with a friend from Idaho.

BASE jumpers use a quick-release parachute to jump from mountains, cliffs and other fixed objects.

Buckley was last seen walking along a ledge near the base of the peak when his friend lost sight of him. The friend called police with an emergency beacon when he ran out of water. Searchers found the friend, picked him up and brought him back to his car Wednesday afternoon.

They began an extensive ground and air search in the Tule Valley area, but they did not find Buckley until Thursday.
