Got about an inch of snow up in the Uinta's Saturday morning.....coming down very heavy at around 9000-10000 feet. I've been snowed on this time of the year before in the mountains, but never like this!

Anyone else get snowed on this weekend?

Yes.

Here is the entry from my trip log:

August 15: Black Mountain (Colorado)

I climbed Black Mountain (NE of Craig) today with a co-worker (Justin Kuhn). Kimberly (wife), Kessler (son) and Shaylee (daughter) also joined us.

In the early morning, it was pouring like crazy with plenty of lightning and loud thunder (before 8 am) and had been doing so all night. It was clear at 9 am, so we decided to give the mountain a try, it was good weather and we made good time until lunch at 11:30, when it began to hail at 10,300 feet. Kessler, Shaylee and Kim decided to head back while Justin and I went over the top of Black Mountain (10,860 feet) in the clouds and fog. We never did get any views. We descended the other side and it began to snow at 10,300 feet. It snowed and rained on and off until we were at the Freeman Reservoir trailhead at 8700 feet elevation where it began to snow again. It wouldn't be record breaking, but snow at 8700 feet on a mid-August afternoon is somewhat unusual.

On the drive home, it was 48F in Craig at only 6300 feet elevation and at 4:45 pm. On the drive back we could see that the top of Black Mountain was all white. I assume the cold front was somewhere between Craig and I-70 since the radio said it was 71 at Aspen (~8000 feet), which is usually cooler in the summer than Craig.

Summer snow in the Uintas, where you were definately isn't unusual. I've been snowed on many times there in July and August. In July 1993, a couple feet fell, though I missed that one. The snow level dropped to 7000 feet on July 23 of that year in the Wasatch and Uintas.

Anyway, speaking of August snow check out the weather forecast for the mountains east of here for one year ago today (I saved this weather forecast on my computer when a discussion of August snow came up):

It makes me happy. I was at Bear Lake it didn't snow there but when Lynn came over the mountian via Monte Cristo he told us that there was fresh snow on the ground and I was floating on clouds thinking of the blessed white stuff. :snowguy:

I'm with Wade. I still have unfinished summer plans... And yet, those Uinta snow pictures are quite beautiful.

Yes, we were hiking out of Garfield Basin (Uintas - south slope) Saturday morning, and as we came up out of Swasey Hole we were met on the ridge with a blizzard (snowing horizontally). It was nice to get down off of the hilltop and out of the wind. By the time we hit the Center Park TH shortly before 2:00PM it was sunny and fairly nice.

Sorry I have no pics. My camera fell out of my shirt pocket and into the lake while releasing a fish the first day we were out. D'oh! :frustrated:

Sorry guys. I packed a ton into this summer. Last summer camping trip this weekend with the kids and my two of their friends and I am ready to look forward to fall and cool temps. I sleep soooo much better at night.

School starts and I am just ready.

As far as summer coming to an end or snow being too soon, snow in the Uintas (and other places) is very common in summer. It's probably already long gone. Summer snows usually melt off quick and seldom stick around long. There is still plenty of summer left.

PS, so far in the past few months, I've been snowed on June 7, June 12, July 2, July 4 and August 15. Summer wasn't over then and it isn't now. :nono:

I was at Trial Lake on Saturday with a bunch of Scouts. We left when blizzard conditions made fishing not-so-nice.

I also went to the Uintas on Saturday and it was snowing at Provo River Falls when I arrived. By the time we got to Pass Lake, it was sunny and blue again. Pretty neat.

A report was posted in the fishing section.
