Foreward: I took a ton of photos on this trip, so this thread is going to become very picture heavy. You are warned if you are on a slow connection ;) I will be updating this thread as I have a chance to go through the photos. Enjoy!
-------------------------------
I arrived back home yesterday after spending the last nine days exploring the backroads of Colorado. My original plan was to head out by myself, but it turned out that Amanda had a few vacation days she needed to take before the end of the month, so she ended up joining me for the first four days, and then again for the last two. Since she was with me for the first four days, we decided to make our base camp at Chalk Creek Campground in Nathrop. Our first day was spent driving from Grand Junction to Nathrop on a couple of different trails with a little pavement in between.....which ended up taking most of the daylight hours, even with an early start to the day.
Day 1: Grand Junction to Taylor Park
We started out by taking Kebler Pass over to Crested Butte. This is a nice easy road that offers some great views of the West Elk Mountains. I've driven this road a number of times, so we flew through it pretty quickly.
I did stop for an early morning photo

....and at the pass

After topping off my gas tank in Crested Butte, it was off to Taylor Park by way of the Reno Divide / Italian Creek trail.

Once we reached the Reno Divide (I opted to skip the 'old' Reno Divide section this trip and will save that for another time), we started our way down along Italian Creek towards Taylor Park.

That is one rocky trail. Met some miserable two wheelers up there. Lot of people up here this weekend. One ATV driver threw off a passenger right in front of us. Nothing serious but scared a bunch of people.
SOrry we missed you up there. We rode it Saturday.

I was there last weekend (8/1/09) at the start of this 9 day trip. I encountered one guy on an ATV near the start of the trail who was winching himself off a rock. The trail was more then he was expecting, so he turned around.

Day 1: Taylor Park to Leadville
After arriving in Taylor Park, we could have easily driven over Cottonwood Pass and have been in Nathrop pretty quickly, but my goals were a little more ambitious for that first day ;) Instead we headed north towards Aspen via Taylor Pass.

Day 1: Mosquito Pass
After reaching Leadville via Hangerman Pass, there was still some daylight yet, and I felt like making the trek over Mosquito Pass....so we headed east on 7th St. and made our way towards the 13,185 foot pass.
Passed some old mining ruins along the way to the pass.

Day 2: Williams & Tomichi
Day two was another early start. I was looking forward to this day. The main reason for planning my trip in August this year was so that I could run Williams Pass (which is only open for the month of August each year), so that trail was first on the agenda.
Of course, I did need to stop in St. Elmo on our way to Williams Pass for a few photos ;)

Maybe I should stop letting people tag along so often.
With SPOT everyone knows where I am anyway.

After three days and one totaled ATV I was about to commit a crime.
It was still a great trip even though the little ingrates needed to be deprived of oxygen.

By the time we reached Westcliffe again, it was starting to get late so I decided to skip Hermit Pass this trip.....so I'll have to return another time. Day 4: Independence & Pearl Pass
On Day 4 we slept in a little bit longer than on the previous days before getting up and breaking down camp. As I stated in the first post on this trip report, Amanda only had 4 days with me before she had to go back to work. Being the 4th day, we needed to head back to Grand Junction this day. There was one trail that I was not able to check out earlier on the trip because it was not yet clear of snow accoriding to my research before leaving, however, after checking again the night before, I knew it was now passable......so we made our way over to Pearl Pass on our way home.
In order to get to Pearl Pass we needed to head over to Aspen. I decided to head over Independence Pass. Even though it's paved, I figured since I had not drivin it before, I might as well check it out at least once...
http://myxj.net/g2/d/156036-2/IMG_5468.JPG
Once in Aspen we headed up Express Creek Road to the start of Pearl Pass. This was an amazing trail and probably one of my favorites in the state! So let me warn you, I was a little camera happy and took a ton of photos......and I'm going to post a bunch of them. So if you don't like looking at photos of great trail scenery, then you may want to go read another thread instead ;) On to the photos....

Day 5: Gore Range & Boreas Pass
Now that I am back from a snowy weekend in the Uinta Mountains, it's time to get back to my Colorado Adventure trip report....
After a good night's sleep back in my own bed at home, I got up early again and headed east on I-70 and US 24 to Red Cliff. From there, I hopped on the Shrine Pass road for a little ways and then headed up Lime Creek. The trail started out rocky when it was in the trees, but once it opened up, the trail smoothed out and offered some excellent views.

The trail and scenery were amazing. The skies were pretty cloudy this day, so the conditions weren't ideal for photographs, but that just means I'll have to head back another time ;) I did end up taking a bunch of photos anyways...

Day 6: Peru Creek & Middle Fork of the Swan
After making it back to Montezuma yet again, I still had plenty of daylight left and needed to figure out where I wanted to go, as I had completed all of the trails I had planned for the day (and more). Looking at my maps and books, I decided to make the quick trip up Peru Creek. While the sky was cloudy most of the day, it had yet to rain on me. That would soon change...

Instead I figured I would head back up Deer Creek and take the Middle Fork of the Swan River back to Tiger Road. By the time I reached the Middle Fork trail, the rain had pretty much stopped.

Day 7: Saxon Mountain, Guanella Pass & Glacier Peak
This day ended up not going as I had originally planned....but in the end it turned out to be a pretty good day.
I started out heading over Loveland Pass on my way to Georgetown.
http://myxj.net/g2/d/158505-2/IMG_6245.JPG
My original plan for the day was to start out on Guanella Pass, however, when I got to the start of the road, they were just closing it completely for construction. It would not be opening up again until 11am, which left me three hours to find something else to do.
So I ended up heading up...

By the time I made it back to Georgetown, it was almost 11:00, so I grabbed a bite to eat for lunch until Guanella Pass was open again. Unfortunately, I was not the only one waiting for the road to open up, and I got stuck in a line of vehicles heading over the pass. That, plus the construction going on made this road less than enjoyable for me. My next plans were to head up to Waldorf and Argentine Pass, but because of the construction and finding out the road would again be closing from 1pm-3pm, I decided to avoid this whole mess altogether for the rest of the day and continue on to US 285.

It was probably a little easier because I was heading downhill, but I don't think I would have had any issues climbing up it either. It was pretty steep and rocky, though.

After taking a right I headed back up the Middle Fork of the Swan. The skies were much clearer today so I took some more photos along this trail...

Day 8: Chinns Lake, Kingston Peak & More
On Saturday, Amanda and I got yet another early start and made our way up Fall River Road. Our first destination was Chinns Lake.

Chinns Lake. This was a very popular place. There were many campers setup along the shore of the lake. You can see the smoke from a campfire.

After making our way back to Fall River Road, we headed up through the town of Alice. Once we figured our way through the maze of roads there, we were soon on our way to Kingston Peak.
We stopped at the Rockhouse at the Loch Lomond Overlook.

When we reached Apex Road, we took a left and make a quick stop at the East Portal of the Moffat Tunnel (last time I was here to run Jenny Creek and Rollins Pass I didn't take the time to check it out). After that we headed out to Rollinsville before heading to Moon Gulch. This turned out to be a very tight trail that was also pretty off-camber much of the way.
Start of Moon Gulch.

Day 9: Red and White Mountain
The final day of our trip was a short one. I had been away from home for 8 days, and had a lot of stuff I needed to get done before heading back to work. We decided to run Red and White Mountain along with Piney Lake Road before heading home. It was an easy trail that wouldn't take us very long, plus it was right near I-70 on our way home.
I didn't take many photos this day, but here's a few that I did take...
