British free climber plunges 130ft to his death after attempting to scale Alps glacier with no safety rope

A British climber plunged 130ft to his death while scaling a sheer rock-face without a safety rope in the French Alps.

The 44-year-old man who was not wearing a protective helmet, is thought to have died instantly while scaling the 12,000ft Milieu glacier near Western Europe's highest peak, Mont Blanc.

He was reported missing by friends when he did not return from a solo climbing expedition on Friday evening.

His lifeless body was was found in a ravine by helicopter rescue team on Saturday morning.

The man, who died of multiple injuries, could not be identified until his family had been informed, Alpine gendarmerie chief Regis Lavergne said.

He added: 'He was taking a huge risk by climbing a very high altitude glacier without any safety equipment.

'The weather above 10,000ft deteriorated very badly on Friday afternoon.

'It seems he simply fell and died at the foot of a ravine 120ft below.'

A 17-year-old French youth also died near Mont Blanc on Friday after slipping and falling 100ft during a hiking expedition, gendarmes said.
