I'm in need of another External Hard Drive.

I'd really love a 2TB drive, but they're still around $200, I think the price will come down soon. So I'm in the market for a 1TB drive for around $100.

I pretty much know where to shop, but I'd like some advice. Seagate and Western Digital are some pretty good names, what features would you suggest?

I've heard certain formats will not allow the full capacity of storage, what are they?

I'll stick with a USB drive rather than FireWire, just so I can use it on all machines.

I recently got a Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 1TB drive from Sam's Club for around $117. So far it's just fine, though (and I think this is true for all external USB drives) it's a bit slow to spin up after a certain period of inactivity. If you only plan on using it for storage, and not running apps from, then they're great. I've had nothing but good luck with WD drives, and some bad luck with others (Seagate and an old Quantum drive from back in the days).

Before the turn of the century, you couldn't GIVE away a Western Digital. They sure seem to have fixed the quality issues they once had. I don't really feel the need to tell you this, but make sure the cache is sufficiently large for your needs.

Here's a Seagate you might consider.

The price is right w/ free shipping, but I'm not sure of the cache size on this one though. :2thumbs:

Wow with USB+ Firewire and free shipping you really can't beat $99.
Granted its Firewire 400 not 800 but thats still cheap.

I've been reading some bad reviews about Seagate, I'm just gonna grab a Western Digital 1TB.

What sync/backup programs would you guys suggest?

For now I just manually drag and drop to a specific folder, because usually there's a bunch of crap on my desktop that I don't want to keep forever.

I've never had a problem with eagle tech... I think they use western digital hard drives. the key thing i like is the eSATA which beats the crap out of usb 2.0 and firewire anyday. but also comes with a usb in case your working on computers without sata

Well, I just went and picked one up from WalMart. 1TB Western Digital fo $109.00

I'm actually impressed with their prices on desktop computers too, they're getting in the game with that stuff. I buy all of my SD cards and jump drives from them too.

I'd buy online for a slightly lower price, but when I need to return/exchange something, WalMart's right there and I can get it done instantly.

Support and knowledge is definitely not their strong point though, so I only shop there if I'm confident with my own skillz.

Thanks for the feedback, fellas. I'll still be hitting you up on your sync methods.
