ST. GEORGE - The badly decomposed body of a Hispanic male was found Friday by passers-by in the Gooseberry Mesa area of Washington County, a remote area near Rockville.



Chief Deputy Rob Tersigni with Washington County Sheriff's Department, said it's hard to tell the age of the man.

"There's no telling how long the body has been there with the heat," he said.

Tersigni added detectives couldn't recognize the face because of decomposition.

The body was found by some people driving by. The death is considered suspicious, and Tersigni said detectives will be investigating it as a homicide.

"We investigate all unattended deaths as homicides until we rule out that they're not," he said. "We don't have anything concrete (on this case)."

Tersigni added that aside from the body, there wasn't anything of significance discovered at this point in the investigation, but detectives are following up on leads.

The identity of the man will not be released until next of kin has been notified. The body has been sent to the Medical Examiner's office to determine the cause of death.

An autopsy report should be available Monday.
