Wow, that's big news, for me at least. I knew John, when we were both 19 years
old, living in Yosemite Valley, and went bouldering with him a few times. I
remember when he started free soloing hard routes for then (5.11 or so). No one
else was doing it at the time. A bit later, in the late 70's I would see him a
number of times, free soloing in Toulome Meadows, usually easier things. This
kind of climbing never appealed to me. I had no idea he was still doing this,
after age 50.
