.40 Cal, MY T PIMP, and Shannon. My very first official Prarie Dog hunt took place this weekend. What a blast Wyoming is just jam packed with these varmits. If you plan going simply just find a dirt road in Wyoming and there is a good chance you'll find Prarie Dogs. Even though the pictures may show it, these were not easy shots. The average shot was at best 200 yards. The ammo wasn't cheap either but the hunt was worth every dime. Thanks to Keith (40 cal.) for introducing me to this new found fun and providing the fine photos. There were three of us and by the end of the day the dead numbered in the 150s. We didn't bother with .22 these dogs were schooled in the art of evasion, and wouldn't let you get at the best with in 100 yards of them. The arsinal went as followed:
MYTPIMP:
Colt HBar AR-15 .223
Ruger M77 17HMR
Browning BLR .243

Keith (.40 cal):
Weatherby SVM 22-250
Browning BAR .243
Thompson Encore .223

Shannon:
Savage 17HMR
Remington 700 7MM

Afterward we enjoyed a nice meal with the Jesus Save Mission (LOL :lol8: )

Moths are those who jump at every new post in this section, while contributing nothing to it. In fact, when we see certain members lurking in this forum, we just roll our eyes and laugh because we know it's coming.

Sweet.. We used to go Prarie Dog fishing just outside of Kemmerer when I was a kid.. take out the big trolling pole with lead core line.. tie on a trebble hook with some corn on it. put the bait close to the hole and unwind until you were a 100 yards or so out and wait for a bite..

Talk about something that fights!!

Looks like a nice hunt ! I am planning on heading over to Wyoming probably this weekend. I just ordered a 2 year supply of ammo, 6000 rounds today. Shot a redfox and 2 badgers on my last hunt.

Congrats Pimp. :2thumbs:

Yeah Congrats! Looks like a THRILLING hunt :roflol:

Thanks it was, one of the first times I was able to get out and have some fun since I ruptured the Achillies tendon last October. I was especially proud of Wyoming's generous welcome as the exploding prairie dog population poses a great threat to the only healthy Sage Grouse population in America. I hate to actually hog up the shooting photos, .40 cals battery went dead on his camera after a few photos, but that's not all after Beech is done you'll get to see the video.

I knew this TR wouldn't be without controversy, But somebody's got to post in the hunting section. Believe it or not the average deer hunter is more successful, given when it was all over we went through 1500 rounds. You know that's only a 10 percent kill ratio. :lol8: I got to become a better shot, that kind of shooting it breaking into my civil unrest preparation stash. :rifle:

Now if I would have had a gun vice that would be cheating.

I was thinking of doing another one of these hunts in the future an official Bogley Prairie Dog festival. And being of good sport we can name it after one of our grand ole hunting forum trolls.

The 2009 FOURISTHENEWONE Prairie Dog Invitational

or

The 2009 SUMMIT 42 Popping Dog Spectacular

I was thinking more along the lines of the MY T Pimp "Big Guns, Little Dicks, let's go out and kill some Sh#T Spectacular!"?

@Sombeech - Troll? Takes one to know one. What exactly is your grand contribution to the hunting/shoot anything that moves forum?

And Summit's right - I don't have any problem with hunting. It's just my idea of hunting isn't fat guys in camo sitting at tables killing unsuspecting rodents.

Oh - and CAMO? Really?! As you sit at a f'ing bench in front your Dodge? I guess it makes you feel like you look like a hunter, you must be a hunter....

Why does the Hunting and Shooting forum have a different standard then everywhere else on Bogley?

Canyoneering forum HAD a five page thread about the death of a snake and is full of people "Monday morning quarterbacking" helmets, knots, and methods. Go post pics and videos of you driving a closed route in the 4x4 forum and watch the shit fly. A few years back someone even flipped me shit for riding my Mtn. bike on a muddy trail.

You all need to calm down and take your own advice and just ignore the posts that you don't like. :2thumbs:

I love this post :haha: Plague ridden, disease carrying rodents are being eradicated from the face of Mother Earth :haha: Last thing I need to do is calm down, I'd be asleep if I was any calmer. I just love the hunting thread and people getting their panties all up in a bunch when little, defenseless, fluffy animals are killed. And shame on you for getting your clothes all muddy riding on a trail  The funny thing is, I don't hunt animals :five:

Hmm kinda torn on this one.. On one hand I'm happy to see some new material in the hunting section. Thats' really good to see. On the other hand, doesn't look like much sport and just killing for the sake of killing. But I guess if they are technically pests, then this could be called challenging target practice? And that is pretty fun I have to admit. Then to top it off, you cooked a couple up, which is more than people do for Jackrabbits and other rodent type hunts.

So I'm gonna say "Keep on rockin bro" and give ya a thumbs up for keeping the hunting forum alive. If anything that should be encouraged.

:2thumbs:

Sombeech
07-01-2009, 11:23 PM
I hear ya man. At the end of the day, when you understand that certain creatures are pests and that this is a method of control, it's easy to accept.

For those who aren't familiar with the game control methods, this will seem like a mindless slaughter. There's a method. This certain species were hunted on this day. The boys drove to this location for this specific animal. This is hunting.

Hunting isn't defined by eating the kill, or else the phrase "Hunting For Food" would be redundant. There's hunting, and then there's hunting for food.

Fish 'n Game regulates the population hunted species. There is no regulation on Pot Guts or Jack Rabbits because there's too many of them. THEY WANT PEOPLE TO SHOOT THEM. When/If this changes, there will be limits and restrictions. No restrictions means PLEASE KILL THESE ANIMALS so we don't have to spend government money to do it.

There are people working 8-10 hours a day studying these statistics, patterns, population growths.... I guess that just gives me the peace of mind that I can worry about my own stuff, because there are people like this actively protecting the animal environment.

fouristhenewone
07-02-2009, 07:05 AM
You must be right, because in the past our fish and game and federal government has made SO many good decisions about wildlife mgmt.

http://www.sltrib.com/News/ci_12553720

"It drives us nuts," said John Evans, director of golf at the Cedar City-run course where prairie dogs have infiltrated 13 of 18 holes and the driving range. "They used to let us just shoot 'em."

In the 1920s there were about 95,000 Utah prairie dogs, according to rough estimates. But aggressive campaigns to eradicate them and their burrows from farms, ranches and other lands put a deep dent in the population. By the early 1970s, there were only about 3,000 left, according to federal estimates.
The population has been holding steady at about 10,000 over the last decade.

"We really want to get people to understand, they're a keystone species," Schwager said. "They're a good thing to keep around."

Keystone species eh? Sounds like a pest to me....

oh - don't come back with the "utah prairie dogs aren't black-tailed, gunnison, etc". I know that. The animals serve the same purpose, and they are only a pest due to the poor management of our range lands.
