Lightning has struck the Angel Moroni statue atop the LDS Church's new Oquirrh Mountain Temple in South Jordan.

"A work crew will re-gild the statue as soon as possible," church spokesman Scott Trotter said Monday.

The gold-leaf sculpture, 10-feet 6-inches tall, was singed Saturday.

But such acts of nature are not unheard of. Lightning hit the Moroni on American Fork's Timpanogos Temple and on the Dallas Temple. The angel-less spire of the Provo Temple once set off a fire alarm after drawing a lightning bolt.

The Oquirrh Mountain Temple is open to public tours until Aug. 1 and will be formally dedicated Aug. 21-23.

When I saw this on the news the other night I laughed, thought it was very funny.
I cracked a few jokes about it with people I know and the stupidity level of people surprised me.
Its a big metal statue, its high in the air, it is going ot be hit by lightning many more times over its existence.
People took this opportunity to lecture me on how god hates mormons and this is proof.
What the hell did they think would happen in a lightning storm? SOMETHING is getting hit, normally the tallest, best path to ground is whats getting struck!
I am no cheerleader for any religion, do not even believe in god, however, to say something that stupid astounded me, especially coming from people I thought were intelligent. A joke about it? Guilty! I did the same thing, but I am talking about serious responses that made the claim, astounding!
